It’s crazy to think of how far you’ve come from doing My Little Pony commentaries to now. 👍 I was worried the PonyBro name would pigeonholed you but I’m actually happy to see I was wrong.
The movie was shot in 1988, but takes place in 1947, so $100 was quite a lot more than in the 80's or today. The $5000 reward offered by the judge was a LOT more
Roger Rabbit was a groundbreaking film for animation, due both to it's incredible practical effects in blending the cartoons with reality, and the fact that it included so many properties, including the first ever crossover between Disney and Looney Tunes. That Daffy and Donald scene was historic. Truly the acme of animation in its time.
Honestly, I was 3 when this movie came out and was allowed to watch it because 'oh it has cartoons in it, it's fine for kids!' Yeah, there's definitely scenes not for little kids in it, but I survived it and frankly loved the movie when I was little. This movie was a technical marvel at the time and frankly still holds up. There's a phrase in filmmaking that originated from this movie, 'Bumping the lamp'. In the bolthole in the bar, the lamp kept getting bumped and swinging around, meaning the animators had to constantly change the light source when animating Roger, especially as he's bouncing all over the place. They didn't NEED to do it, but it really helped 'sell' that Roger was there, and now the phrase is used to mean going above and beyond in filmmaking.
The sad part is, Doom's plot is from real life. In the days the movie was set, trolley cars made L.A. great for public transportation. Then the companies were bought out, shut down, and freeways built so that people would have to buy expensive cars. Now L.A. is notorious for it's horrible traffic.
Finally, during the pan across the desks in Eddie's office (done in one long continuous shot, no cuts, so Bob Hoskins as soon as the camera cut away had to adjust his outfit and get in position by the time it got back), there's a picture of Eddie and his brother with their father all dressed as clowns in the circus. So Eddie's skills where he made the weasels laugh to death are from when he was a kid.
Ah yes, one of the greatest and most iconic animated 80's films of all time! it was one of the few moments in history where Warner Bros and Disney collaborated their animation studios and created a masterpiece!
this movie is absolute genius from a technical standpoint. what a masterpiece. thinking about the fact that most if not all of it was done with no computers whatsoever blows my mind. also fun fact, for the biggest characters (bugs bunny, daffy duck) they were only allowed to use them as long as they got an equal amount of screen time to their counterparts (mickey mouse, donald duck)
also this is the only thing i’ve ever personally seen bob hoskins (eddy) in, and it took me years to learn he’s actually english! i’m english too and i couldn’t even tell. he does the american accent flawlessly. may he rest in peace.
That was quite a movie and also quite a reaction. The book the movie is based on is even darker and more messed up. FYI: The target demographics isn't not kids for this movie. The animators even snuck in an (infamous) upskirt shot of Jessica Rabbit as a freeze frame bonus.
this is really cool it's one of my childhood movies along with Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie's Labyrinth, if you like you might react to that too if you haven't seen it already.
"This cannot be for kids!" This is a Rated PG film funny enough, I remember watching this on Cartoon network! (But I dont remember how much censorship was put in it, or if they did at all)
Disney created the Touchstone Pictures brand for PG and R rated films that wouldn't work well under the Disney name. They had a ton of successes from the mid 80's into the 2000s. Splash, Two Men and a Baby, Good morning Vietnam, the Nightmare before Christmas... the list goes on. Touchstone kept the studio alive until their Animated films became successful again.
If you notice in this movie, there are some motifs and references to Back to the Future since director Robert Zemeckis was working back-to-back with that film trilogy and Roger Rabbit!

Lots of cameos from different animation properties! Since you’ve seen this film, you should definitely check out the Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers movie.
