Yeah, that evil Alicorn at the end. Alot of people are making the connection that she might be Radiant Hope from the comics, especially considering it's rumored that King Sombra might make an appearance in G5.
@@CeasersGhost How do you know they're flooding every MLP comment section, unless you are also watching every MLP video and scrolling into the comments?
Overall, I enjoyed the special, and I’m glad it sounds like you did too, PonyBro. I definitely liked the characterization of the Mane 5 - I don’t agree with any assertions that Izzy was at all turned into a joke character or anything like that - that’s a legitimate part of her character, to be sure (what I think adds to her character is why I believe she does it), but I really enjoy her ability to shape disparate items into a cohesive whole (like when she took the spoons to make a Maretime Bay Day wreath) - her creative side like that is one of the things I like best about her. I also liked how she took the initiative to try and fix up Sunny’s old lantern, knowing how much it meant to her.
I do wish Sunny had been given more to do, as it felt like she barely had any screen time - though I did like the confirmation that her Alicorn powers are, in fact, temporary. Posey was another character that was sadly underutilized, as her griping never felt all that significant (though I did like the demonstration of how old patterns of thought die hard). Also, the plotting was kind of weak - it felt like the various story threads never were quite weaved together and as a result, it felt a little rushed and empty.
It really did feel like a Gillian Berrow episode of Friendship is Magic in all the best and worst ways: best in that the characters (especially the main ones) are strong, and weak in that the plotting is frankly somewhat dull.
As far as the animation goes, it looked rough in places (especially at the beginning) but got better (generally speaking) as it went along. I thought that, considering all the things working against it (the reduced budget compared to the movie, as well as COVID-induced upheaval), it still looked quite nice.
If I had to rate the special, it’s a solid “B”. (For reference, I rate the movie an “A+”). Can’t wait to see what the series has to offer - at this point, I’ll enjoy basically whatever they do - as long as they don’t make that Alicorn actually a corrupted Twilight Sparkle (I think that’s the only thing that could really upset me at this point).
From a technical/production perspective, one thing I really hope they improve with the specials/show in the future is that there were almost zero background characters - There were just a few characters per scene and if they weren't the main focus, they just stood there and reacted to the focus character.
I know it's probably a budget thing, but that basically means zero chance of fixing it in the series with an even lower budget. They should spend some of their current budget on just making a few animations of background characters doing random things which they could re-use later on (with a few new animations to look out for added later if they could)
Background characters were a big part of why G4 became so popular and this looks so empty by comparison
My thoughts on on Make Your Mark is that it was alright. I’m very easily pleased, but even I can’t just say that I ultimately loved it and ignore my personal thoughts.
This is what I didn’t really like: The pacing of it felt like it was at maximum speed the entire time, conflicts felt like they were being solved fast or just left unsolved and never approached again, who looks to be an occurring villain pops up out of nowhere and says 4 things not giving us any reason for wanting the magic to herself, and Izzy seems to have been dummed down for short comedic moments and her voice seems to have gotten higher, higher to a slightly….. obnoxious level I’m not gonna lie.
This is what I did like: I like that they went for a realistic approach when it comes to this whole different species living close to eachother being a problem thing. Not all of the earth ponies were gonna be 100% fine with the idea of unicorns and pegasi having their magic, they haven’t been around it or lived with it before so obviously they are gonna have even more trepidation about it when it starts to mess up or “glitch”. Feeling left out is also completely understandable, seeing 2 other species of ponies evolve into something greater meanwhile yours seems to have been kept the same, how could they not be?
I like how Queen Haven seems to have this character trait where she’s extremely understanding and accepting (when it comes to her daughters anyway we’ll have to see how she is with anyone els besides her daughters.)
I give this movie a 5/10 it was fun to watch but definitely could have better pacing and conflicts should last a bit longer, also they really should of made the villain appearance much longer.
@@JonnyManz1 Make your mark has grown on me since I’ve made this comment. The Alicorn villain popping up for a few seconds doesn’t bother me much anymore, and rewatching it I had a bit more enjoyment than last time. Make your mark is a 7/10 for me now.
I generally agree (the commentary on Izzy notwithstanding), but I’m willing to be more forgiving of the Alicorn thing since it’s very obviously setup for the series proper.
There are things that I like about G5 so far, and I WANT to like it more.... Buuuuut... it just feels like it's taking forever to set things up instead of getting to the actual story. For example, it's just now teasing a Nightmare Moon-type villain, whereas in G4, they had already found the Elements of Harmony and turned Nightmare Moon back into Luna. Zipp starts asking important questions about the crystals at the end, and I'm thinking, "Yeah, why weren't you looking into that instead of avoiding your friends for no reason and arguing with Posey for half the episode?" I mean, I still enjoyed it, but it barely feels like anything happened. And the grabby hooves bug the crap out of me.
@@Narrator007 Holy cow, I didn't realize it had been so long already! Realistically, it'll probably just be a regular video, but I really want to get my butt in gear to upload something.
And then came back in the Game... which should take place paralafter MYM? "After" considering the game mentions "The New Earth Pony Magic", but "before" considering there are no wanted posters of Sprout at the sheriff's office.
I'm actually surprised no one has asked Ponybro to react to RWBY... Or at least haven't seen requests for this show to be reacted to. Most reactors that I follow have been asked to react to RWBY in the past months. Surprised the requests for a reaction to this haven't reached this channel as strong as other mlp / cartoons / anime reaction channels... Huh..
@@jewelssantanner If he be willing to I love to a reaction to the whole series. And I haven't watched the anime yet cuz I'm waiting for the dub, but what I understand Ice Queendom only covers the first two volumes in the first couple episodes in a very condensed abridged way. Also if you watch the anime without watching the actual first couple volumes miss out on Monty's god tier fighting choreography.
Also I personally never consider the first three volumes as a original, it's all just RWBY.
If he ever gets to it would you want only the first three books of the original or the whole thing? Or even the anime that just came out might be interesting heard it’s going through all the same plot points so far just looks better
Well, he's to reacting to a lot of different stuff at once and military obligations right now. But when he finished some of the other shows and has the time, I would love to see some RWBY reactions, the color trailers at the very least.
Believe it or not, the series Tell Your Tale does connect into Make Your Mark. There are things there that kind of explain anything you might have missed here. Granted, 3 episodes of TYT after MYM do we see Izzy putting together Sunny's lantern, but it is indeed all connected. Still too early to say if the IDW comics are connected or not. Still, there may be more backstory in the TYT episodes for the next MYM chapter. Sorry, but you gotta suffer. ;p
This special is just eh. It doesn't tell us anything that wasn't already established in the movie. A lot the times the plot just drags. At least the ending looks promising.
I did like the confirmation that Sunny’s powers do, in fact, come and go, and the fact that we finally learned exactly what the Earth ponies’ powers are, since that was just hinted at in that after-credits scene.
