NTFS disk corruption bug (cd C:\:$i30:$bitmаp)

I literally had to disable Avast to watch this video because it saw the command in the video title and interpreted it as the exploit itself

that moment when you can trust an independent content creator more than the mainstream media...

Media is like an overtuned loudspeaker, it just takes it to the critical level while the real thing is just a not-to-fear thing

The media makes it sound like this is the big new Windows vulnerability which will kill us all. I guess anything for clicks.

AVAST THINKS ITS A VIRUS BEACUSE OF THE TITLE LOL

The thing is, that if your FS was already corrupted before (for example from not shutting down your OS properly), triggering check/repair can make things worse. So yeah, in some cases it probably can cause some damage.

To be honest, this is simpler and faster than scheduling a full disk check using the Properties menu of the drive.
I hope Micro$oft does not fix it, the bug is quite useful.

Guys... The reason it says to repair errors in drives is because as we see in cmd, the directory is 'corrupt or unreadable'. Windows has a feature which if it notice a corruption in the system it will warn the user to restart to run chkdsk. Windows thought the directory (C:\:$i30:$bitmаp) is part of the system (maybe it is... but not critical at all) so... here we go...

I can see people using the bug to trick people into restarting after running a malicious payload, for example a badUSB runs a script to take ownership of a random system file (i.e. hal.dll), deleting it and then using the bug (just running C:\:$i30:$bitmаp in a powershell window) and just quitting the powershell prompt. if the end user was looking away they would have no idea something like that happened and would reboot themselves to find a bricked PC, not a fun prank.

This bug has originated from Windows XP, and since Windows 10 uses some code from Windows XP, this bug can exist. It doesn't work neither on Windows 7 or 8(.1), because these versions doesn't use code from Windows XP.

It went into Recovery Mode and it doesn't repair the drive automatically; it only offers the option to reboot or go to advanced options...

EDIT: Startup repair doesn't do anything!
EDIT 2: I booted from the Windows Setup disk and run chkdsk c: /f and... It didn't do anything: it says that there are no problems in the file system. 🙃

Hi mate, I don't know if my problem is related to this however when i ran the chkdsk util after a bsod error: ''UNEXPECTED STORE EXCEPTION'' and another ''CRITICAL PROCESS DIED".
The chkdsk returned several lines of errors:

I used to mess with file names in Linux vs. Windows and it ended up causing Windows to constantly fail "fixing" these files and flagging the file system as "unsafe" (force mounting as read-only on Linux and refusing to mount on Windows) and needing to reformat it.
I even got Windows to somehow create files with preceding dots, which the Explorer would remove in theory and it shitting in its pants, because of it.

Well, the above wasn't relevant, but whatever...
