Classic theme can easily work without DWM, unless your PC is running Windows 8/8.1/10. Turning off the DWM would make all modern Windows 8/10 (Metro/UWP/Live Tiles) apps unusable, as they won't even open without it. The same thing will happen to the Start screen, battery/network/volume flyouts and action center in Windows 10. However, all the classic apps (like explorer, Chrome, Word, Paint, etc) will continue working, just as usual. And, btw, you can't just disable a UI in Windows as Windows 1.0 initially was a Graphical User Interface itself, a GUI for MS-DOS, a system with Command Line UI built in. Basically, Windows is not a system, but a Graphical UI for MS-DOS. The world will never be the same 😂

When you kill Explorer it will close all file explorer Windows along with Desktop and Task Bar (including task bar applets like start menu or action center). However, all other Windows (which are not explorer) will continue working. The cursor, other windows and their buttons won't disappear so that graphical user interface will still be accessible :)
Reminds me on Windows 3.1 you could change literally everything to be the same color and then you're stuck with a solid red screen or whatever color you set it to.
@@Ryuzaki99 are you sure? The now discontinued Windows Nano Server doesn't seem to have a text based UI as you suggest. Trust me I looked in various Microsoft presentations on Nano-Server back in the day for this very purpose. I was hoping this would be our chance to see a text based Windows, but alas, from what I saw, the ONLY way you can have any meaningful interaction with OS is remotely from another PC.
You can't use the OS locally, from the looks of it. The only thing you see on screen locally is some basic info on the server and a couple of simple configuration options. And while it's text based, it appears to be a custom-built interface for the nanoserver and not a text based universal shell for the OS. It's certainly isn't able to load command prompt or powershell in that environment, or so it appears.
But I could be wrong or may have missed something. And I'd love it if I'm wrong because text based UI shells are dope. If you have screenshots or a link to an article or video describing a text shell for Windows, do share it. I've been looking for such shell for too long.
P. S. It may come as a surprise to some to learn that Command Prompt has no UI. It cannot render itself. Neither can PowerShell. This is how Windows differs from Linux and Mac (according to Microsoft). Windows will use The Windows Console (conhost.exe) for rendering text based apps, be it cmd, PowerShell, bash (WSL), or even your home brew text based app. Conhost.exe is the "black" window everyone thinks is command prompt. And ironically enough, it is a Wim32 app. That is why cmd opens in a floating window even in the stripped down Windows PE. You are literally running just another Wim32 app with your standard window controls.
So, when you launch cmd.exe, for example, Windows first launches conhost.exe and loads Windows Command Processor (aka command prompt) inside it.
This is different from Linux and macOS in that you have a terminal application that you launch, which then opens a CLI shell of your choice (bash by default), whereas in Windows, if you try to launch conhost.exe, you get nothing. You must launch a CLI shell (such as cmd.exe) or app first before a terminal window can open.
P. P. S. If you want to use terminals the Unix-like way, Microsoft provides the Windows Terminal, built with UWP technology. It's a stand-alone program which you launch first, which, then, loads your preferred CLI shell, just like in Linux!

Windows NT releases (including Win10) has no text only UI like Linux has (or how Windows 9x had dos underneath). The graphical interface is at the foundation. So. Even when you boot safe mode with cmd or install Windows Server Core (no UI mode), cmd is still in a floating windows that can overlap and be resized.
P.S. Early versions of NT like 4.0 had the GUI in its OS kernal! So you would get the GUI at the kernal level without needing to load any DLLs or whatnot. That's has since been changed. Today, the NT kernal has no UI whatsoever. And I mean no UI at all, not even a text based UI that the Linux kernal has!
So, Windows with a text only mode, as far as I know, doesn't exist...yet!

Enderman you should suspend winlogon.exe on a clean installation of windows 10 and then kill dwm.exe
