Wikipedia: "Windows ME was a continuation of the Windows 9x model and still DOS-based like its predecessors, but with restricted access to real mode MS-DOS in order to decrease system boot time."
But for now we don't need that faster startup anymore (because of mostly we use it on VMs). Right choice!

@@rage4win_120 9x uses the MS-DOS 7.1 mono-kernel, Windows ME runs MS-DOS 8.0 and yes it uses 8.0's mono-kernel aswell, This is why many of the dos components cannot be swapped with that of DR-DOS or FreeDOS.

Windows ME is still DOS based. Microsoft just crippled the DOS functions on Windows ME.

Its not crippled, ME is better than 98Se at running dos apps within windows and most work well. For everything else ME provided a dos boot disk.

I think that Ender showed how to return the "Restart in MS-DOS" option/function, not how to run them!
The main reason that a lot of people say "Windows ME is a 9X base, not NT!" is because they think that Ender thinks that ME is an NT-based OS.








P.S. 32-bit versions of Any Windows can run MS-DOS app/games!

No, it wasn't the point. The point was to migrate most of Win2000 new functionality to Win9x kernel, which users needed because of VXD drivers and DOS apps (DOS VM in Win9x is superior to the NTVDM in NT-based systems).

No, NT-based OS is used on modern Windows (around 1995) like Windows 95 and 98. Windows 7 is the last NT-based Windows and replaced with RT starts from Windows 8.

Well, ME IS a NT system, even though it boots through MS-DOS 8.0 and uses some Win 9x technologies. Thanks to Wikipedia, its 16/32 bit system at the same time.Well, even though some people concider this as cheating, it is not a clickbait.

Given that MS-DOS 8 is incapable of Real Mode, you could make a disk image with a Windows 98 boot disk, or a Windows 98 DOS bootable USB, CD-ROM, or use a second computer. Then you could install Windows 98 and Windows Millenium together, and two BAT scripts that run/enable either 98 or Me, and rename themselves to prevent renaming WINDOWS and Program Files for each OS, they could be WinME.bat or Win98.bat. If you boot to DOS with a Windows 98 boot disk and have Me and 98, you have the full and most modern 9x system, you can use Windows 98 to run programs that detect Me and refuse to run and to have full DOS.

Try, replacing C:\Windows\System\vmm32.vxd with command.com from FreeDOS, and you get real-mode DOS without using well-known patch (no config.sys for you), remember you still need vmm32.vxd (rename with another exe name) to boot Windows
Also, booting when vmm32.vxd not here, you get a prompt asking for Windows Loader, try some executables other than exe and com (and no batch file), and parameters no accepted (unlike older dos)

I have yet to find a dos app that dosnt work great within ME. Unless u want to flash bios, then use a boot disk/cd. Mostly all u have to set the app not to detect windows. This also means you get soundblaster sound with software Wavetable without a soundblaster card. Though I've found ISA Awe32 to work fine within me as well. I will try this hack though. I like ME cause it starts up lightning fast compared to Windows 98 SE and I don't think it deserves the bad reputation.
