What's With the Royal Guard?

Well ..we humans dye our hair right? What if it was a must for every royal pony guard to dye their manes tails and coats to look the same? * shrug* just a thought~

Shining Armor is the only guard that does stuff!!

I know I am late but I think the reason they look the same was cause their armor have enchantments that make them look the same (except Flash because his broke)

and I believe the white ones are supposed to be the day guards mainly

and black ones mainly night guards

I feel that Shinning Armour was a real guard, he is the older brother of one of the most powerful unicorns in Equestria (Twilight). He might be the captain because he IS very powerful, and can hold off threats for as long as needed

The British royal guard, according to what I've read, consists of hand-picked elite spec ops soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Perhaps they are all war veterans.

So you can see that in the begging of Equestria Girls when Sunset Shimmer is finding Twilight's room, you can see that it shows a scene of guards with lights on their horns finding people. Maybe they are in the day and night for same reason... And that's finding anyone suspicious!

Maybe all the guards are just clones. That's a theory I'm settling with.

1:22 actually this is something called worf's effect, they create a character or a group who are theorically strong and capable, so when a new villain is introduced, they use these characters to demonstre how much of a danger they represent, like when Cell from DBZ easily defeated Vegeta, or when someone defeats the ANBUs from Naruto, and Garou fighting the S-Rank heroes in OPM
(I know this video is from 7 years ago but I wanted to tell everyone the real reason to why the guards are so easily defeated)

The theory the guards are just for show is a far stretch. While the guard probably applies some theatrics to appear more threatening, like most militaries, I wouldn’t assert that’s all they are there for.
A more reasonable take would be the guards, you know, guard the city. A lot of fantasy cities have guards to patrol the city and control the entrances to said city to keep it safe from mundane threats. They could act similar to a police force as well.

As to why they appear incompetent in the show is because we primarily see them when trying to deal with a powerful threat beyond their capabilities, like a group of foot soldiers against something akin to Godzilla.

It’s also a kids show about the magic of friendship, they would never go in depth on what the guard does on the day-to-day, nor would they choose to focus on the guard when the main characters could combat the threat. All the more reason to assume they just guard the city.

I think the Royal Guards are there to solve simple everyday crimes such as if a regular pony is robbing the bank and the Mane Six and others are there to defend their homes from supervillains.

Huh, I honestly agree with this theory a lot, So with the two theories I’ve watched that basically go over this topic, I think my idea of it is that the scarecrow army has another purpose other than to intimidate but it is to also protect the citizens of Equestria, that way while Celestia beats out the threat, in case there is little minions for the main threat the guards can handle those.

Thats actually a pretty good point. I wondered why they always look the same. Imagine having over 1000 brothers XD but what about in "the best night ever?" when they got to the gala, other ponies joined in on their song, "at the gala?" every stallion looked exactly like prince blueblood. I think that maybe the animators got lazy there, because there doesn't seem to be another explanation. But anyway, thanks for all your theorys. It helps the stupid people like me understand basic things XD

My theory:
The guards are captured and “changed” changelings, that have had their opinion changed or have a spell on them to make them loyal to Celestia.
That would explain why they all look similar. However, their changeling powers were taken from them after they changed to their guard form. If they tried to go to the changeling hive, they wouldn’t be believed, and they would probably be killed.

Celestia: I'm so loyal to my subjects I won't even allow my Guards to fight

Maybe the guard is to keep the peace from day to day and to handle small threats. While when a big bad guy ( NMM, Discord, etc) they are to slow the threat down until the big weapons come out. As for the uniformity, think about warfare. If ponies went to war, say against the Diamond Dogs, imagine what the dogs would think if one of them fell a white stallion in gold armor, turned around, and there was another white stallion in gold armor. The ancient Persians had a similar idea with their Immortals.

I know that I’m pretty late but I think the reason why the guards look the same is because Celestia used a clone spell on two guards. One that had grey skin and one that had white skin. Then Celestia took it to her advantage and duplicated the two guards into like 1000 guards. Also, the two guards didn’t want her to pay them.

I love how everyone overthinks stuff. If the royal guards did all the dirty work (e.g
defeating Nightmare Moon) the mane 6 and the princesses would sit at home, reading books or playing with a canon or training animals etc...

Let that sink in. The show would be boring if the guards were needed. They're probably one there so Hasbro has an excuse for creating new toys.

i had a similar thought while watching the show, but the other thought i had was that they may have been useful in the past and in the thousand years of peace where every threat was imprisoned, they simply lost their luster over generations of disuse. almost all the threats faced all have the preamble of being locked away for a thousand years/moons, even Luna; no normal pony lives that long and thus many life times worth of peace would have passed and doing nothing but drills and formalities weakens a defense.

The thing is, most threats we see are on an apocalyptic level. Most went head to head with Celestia, and assuming she is the strongest princess, that means she is an army of herself. Notice how tirek, after stealing literally EVERY PONIES magic was only able to reach an impasse with twilight, who only had the magic of 4 alicorns.
So yes, against foes like Nightmare moon, discord Chrysalis or Tirek, but they aren't meant to.
When the changelings came back in season 6, Trixie called that a princess level problem. Same could be said for the other main villains. They were either defeated by one or more princesses or with the elements of Harmony, which are just sparkly weapons of magical mass destruction.


tl:dr, the guard is just not meant to fight supervilains. What they most likely are is the equivalent to the police. Dealing with thieves and such. Not with enemies that can slay the goddess of the sun.

Also, I'd like to point out that they do a lot of good in stopping less powerful, more average bad-guys like thieves or every-day ponies who decide they'd like to take Celestia's place in ruling the kingdom. It's only when it's a "big badie" that the princesses themselves actually have to get their hooves dirty. The Guard take care of the normal threats so that they don't have to worry about it all the time, and can focus on their royal duties instead.

I've always thought the guard was more of an honor thing than a defense thing.

I kinda think the guards are just there to do little bit stuff think of it like a beehive or something the queen bee gives birth but in canterlot the queen bee will be Celestia giving order to the guards and it might be one of the reasons why they look alike Luna and Celestia 🐝

Question: are there earth pony guards? Up to this video I only have seen gray unicorns (with the exception of Shinng Amor and the one white unicorn guard in this video) or white Pegasi as guards so far (with the exception of Luna's badwinged bodyguards).
Well it make sense that they had a uniform spell (does this also hide their cutie mark?). Also are they divide like normal armies (unicorns groundforces, Pegasi air force (spinning this theory on maybe the earth pony guards just are in the Navi and there for not often seen)). I would like to see a guards episode.
But the seem more like than a police force than a military.

I’m late but I think that there’s a spell for them so that their identity’s can be protected when they work for the gaurds, the ones who aren’t under the spells are the higher ups I think to show how loyal they are and they can be trusted

My theory is that they're trained to handle more mundane threats, at least, as mundane as unicorns and the like can be. Like a mix between a glorified police force and an army.
They aren't trained to handle those with power the likes of Discord, but rather, the average individual. And with large amounts of the Guard, maybe defend against an invading army.

I think the gaurds were inteded for also a large scale invasion by outside nations. If you notice, the mane six have always fought against "bosses" (ignore the changelings for a sec), scattered all across the world they would be a heavy hitting force. They could also be a backup if something happened to the princesses/mane six. Similar to the changeling episodes, or even "stalling" like they needed to in the crystal empire (or should have used effectively)

What if they aren't even real ponies? Has it ever been strange that there is so few that look unique? What if it was one of celelestia made them all with magic?? I mean like you said at the end there was the flaws with the alicorns (even if it was a joke) after makeing so many their would be flaws... Have you noticed there were a lot less of them in the episodes where the three princesses gave up their magic? At that point its likely that shining armor had to make the few that were around... It could also explain the bat pony knights as they swap Luna is the one that makes them... Tho it could be that there are a few that are real to keep up with the whole joining the Royal gaurd thing like with flash and shining... And this could once again be said for the crystal empire for their guards.. Like all these guards are just dummies with life like qualities so that the princesses dont have to strain their magic day after day... Somehow this just makes sences to me xD

I’ve Always thought shining armor wasIs the oneRoyal guard pony that actually knew how figght. Your theory about the guards just looking tough to scare invaders and keep the peace is a good Siri but I only think it works if there’s at least just one guy that knows how to fight and do the traditional jobs of the soldier which would make sense and receive that he’s always so exhaustedHe’s the only one actually fighting.

They might be useful if Celestia knew that a threat might come, or if there was war, or just too many ponies unemployed.

I think I know why shining armor stop is so hard maybe it’s because there’s a lot of guards and he needs to make sure each one of them does their job right and there’s a lot of new recruits and he has to teach them

I feel like it'd be so much easier for them to just train REAL guards.
Also, in the MLP movie during the attack, The Royal Guard, nor The Wonderblots even made an appearance.

In the show, other than defeating nightmare moon and rising the sun, we don't see a lot of action or fighting with Celestia. But the quote"Deep inside you know how powerful you are" makes Celestia appear extremely powerful. So why does she surround herself with powerful looking things such as similar looking royal guards?

I’ve decided that the Mane Six are Equestria’s de facto military. Sure, the EUP and the Wonderbolts look more like an army or an air force, but as you said their main purpose is just that: looks. When Equestria does fall under either a foreign or domestic threat, who is actually fighting on the front lines? That’s right: Twilight and her friends.

Yet Twilight does not have any guards of her own.

It would be easy to duplicate them in animations of moments with the guards in them . If they were different , then....it would be a bigger fuss to animate the episodes . they are all duplicated and their animations are exact same and symmetrical which is called “twinning” and not animation at all .
Also , I just find it funny that all the guards look like members of FBI but with royal guard uniform . Maybe Celestia looked through Starswirl The Bearded’s spell notes and found a cloning spell . But that’s not true but a silly theory .
Take for example...the grey guards : Exact Same highlights , lowlights , main and base . Now it would be impossible to have the same highlights in their eyes unless they are looking at a duplicated lightbulb . Animators DID get lazy , after all there are a lot more stuff to think about other than their animations

Still, I just want just one episode where the guards actually accomplish something and aren't "just for show" or used as Fodder.

I have a head-canon where the EUP only got its shit together after the events of the MLP movie. After Equestria's public humiliation; having its capital city conquered in less than a day (keep in mind that during WWII, France fell to the Nazis in a matter of weeks and that was arguably France's most humiliating defeat ever), all three Princesses apprehended with the fourth going into exile only to be apprehended later, the complete failure of Equestria's allies to aid them, and of course the EUP's total absence in all of this; the guard underwent a complete overhaul and was reorganized into a formidable fighting force, integrating the griffons and Stormguards (who, with the death of the Storm King, were loyal to their commander) with said commander of the Stormguard becoming the new commander of the EUP.

Yeah, this is likely the most plausible theory. If they weren’t exclusively going up against superpowered world-ending baddies, they’d seem a lot more formidable. Maybe they’re doing a good job after all?

I think they put the guards their so the guards can look like their strong and going to attack but they are not. Example: one night a person is trying to sneak into the castle can the guards point their weapons at the pony and the pony runs away but the guards were never planing to attack they were just looking like they were going to attack

Trully, the Guard exists to make Celestia look weak. They help to distract the world from the fact that she has perfect protection for her people in the form of her control of the sun.

I don't think the Royal Guard are incompetent. You just happen to always catch them when there's a supervillain attacking the capital. You might as well ask why the Japanese reserves are so incompetent because they can't even fend off Godzilla so what good are they.

Pretty sure guards are meant to protect against ponies of other nations or threats, not extremely powerful forces of chaos, darkness, or anything along those lines

I think that the writers just wanted for the main characters to be the heroes . The Royal guards, do protect the royalty, but from stuff like crime for money, not villeins that want to take over Exestria! They are just too weak for that!

The purpose of the guards is to fight as well, remember the scene with the battle against king sombra? It shows the royal guard fighting

I think the answer is simple, they're not the actual royal guard. When I say that I mean the real royal guard is made up of fewer but more powerful ponies like shining armour, think about as said in the video the guard we see are merely red herrings and an intimidation tactic while the real guards aren't seen in the open. My evidence? Think back to a canterlot wedding despite the uselessness of the scarecrow guards, shining armour, the "captain", has a shielding spell so powerful that even when he's under mind control it still manages to keep an army of changlings at bay. Also technically it would be more practical to train a few really powerful guards than to split resources across hundreds of weaker and less effective warriors. But hey this is just my stupid theory so I could be wrong.

Did you guys see that the guards are unicorns, earth ponies and pegusus? The Unicorn Guards carry some sort of weapons but the pegusus guards doesn't have a weapon.

Good theory, but in the season 5 finale, when twilight goes down o the alternate reality where she looks for applejack, the vision applejack describes, the royal guards are fighting in a war between the Changlings, this is one to the few times the royal guards are actually useful

The same reason as Palpatine's royal guard, he doesn't need them. They are just making him to look weaker and to show his power as Emperor, in our case as Princess of Equestria

I share the same theory about the royal guard being under spells that modify their appearance, but I take it in a little different direction otherwise. My theory is that the military is actually the majority of male population, putting the true gender ratio around 1:1. Furthermore, the royal guard is not all there is. I believe the majority of the male population are actually soldiers, out protecting the nation, either at its borders, keeping an eye on other countries, or maybe even waging wars. The royal guard then are the soldiers not even expected to fight. Think attack on titan, except instead of the best earning their spot in the cushioned capital, those who are among the elite in social status. Just like in real life history, certain members in high society either opt out of the military (as seen as the canterlot population being a bit more in favor in stallions compared to ponyville) or simply enlist but never are at the front lines.

What if the reason the big threats are big threats is because they are able to overtake the guards? What if most lesser evil attempts are thwarted early by the guards?

I think they are just kind of there, like they serve to get knocked out to show the bad guy’s strength. Kind of like Red Shirts in Star Trek, or unnamed clone troopers in Star Wars

I think it makes sense that the guards are there to deal with mundane day to day threats. Random ponies trying to sneak in steal a tapestry or graffiti on the walls or something. But since they're just well-trained normal ponies they can't do much against non-normal threats like a swarm of emotion eating shapeshifters or corrupted alicorn princesses.

I made this comment on one of firebrands video that with basically 4 reusable directional nuclear bomb all they need is a color guard a show of power for foreign dignitaries and give her subjects a sense of security. Now as for shining armor half his job would be paperwork and filing paperwork

I think they’re just there for structure. Celestia and Luna are so powerful, more so than the guards by far, they don’t really need guards. They’re most likely more there to make it look intimidating

What if they're robots, like mass production of a ton of look alike robots. That would be why there's so many of them and why they look so similar

if the guards being all one of two colors then how come flash sentry keeps his orange color? and since all of the guards r normal guards while twilight's brother got his cutie mark to represent him being the captain more or less does that mean all of the guards have matching cutie marks? that is when the plate is removed to see the marks.

So... Maybe it's for stealth and camo? Most buildings and stuff are white.

But I'm sure they are an army for fighting with regular ponies like in cases of uprising or assassination attempts or some sort of attack by ponies. It being a small matter the alicorns would not want to use their magic against them or "waste their time" against them.

And although Sea Breeze's case suggests they probably aren't trained, they look way too fierce and act way too brave (and rather hotheaded) to not be trained

If Celestia used a spell to all make them look exactly the same how come I've seen guards with a diffrent color coat and mane and how come the eye color is the same blue for white guards and amber for grey ones?

I like to think that the uniformity spell is cast on the armor and when they are wearing it they appear the same

Personally I think the Equestrian Royal Guards are completely useless. Princess Celestia should have replaced them with the Imperial Guard in the Imperium of Man in Warhammer 40K, at least those Guards get the job done.

An army that is powerful. All it takes is one cocky invasion to wipe the floor with the royal guard for all the nations to see what a pushover equestria can be

but as for their purpose, the royal guards, in my opinion, are there to show how powerful a villain is. For example, the canterlot wedding... the guards stand there looking mighty strong, but i think the way they get defeated is supposed to show how powerful chrysalis was. and also, i think fans would be confused if a royal palace had nobody guarding the entrance.. i mean, chrysalis would've just barged in, making there no reason for her to kidnap cadence, there for giving the 2 episodes less of a plot. in conclusion, we need the royal guards.

its kinda mean...but even if they are trained badly, they can basically be a GIANT wall of ponies to go through.
"if you wanna get to them, you gotta go through us!" i think applies here. i think that's also partly why the princesses especially celestia want to protect them. (maybe it's just celestia, since the other princesses are unaware or just too kind)

here's why in this theory i think princess celestia protects her royal guard
1) they need to keep their kind nature in check so they protect as many ponies in their "wall" as possible.
2) if the "wall" of ponies is dramatically smaller they have lots of scared ponies that feel hopeless.
3) if they dont fight with the "wall" of ponies they look like they are either incompetent or simply dont care.

In actuality, the guard are all related. Yep, canterlots guards are mlp version of officer jenny. Think about it, families in mlp tend to have similar cutie marks anyway, and some families, like applejacks, are very large. add the fact the canterlot is where most unicorns are officially trained its not far off to think that canterlot guards meet new ponies, have families and kids who also join the guard. I bet twilights dad was even in the guard. I mean shining armor, if his dad wasn't in the guard, he highly wanted his son to be.

Actually they did help ones when Starlight went back in time to stop the rain boom and then they went back to Ponyville and went to Sweet Apple Acres and they sell Applejack and then she talked about the war between King Sombra and the Crystal Empire and the guards were actually fighting for Equestria so there are fighting King sombras Army well it wasn't really his because he forced his subjects to fight for him against Equestria and that's the only time when the guards actually fought

Laaate but like in one of the alternate futures twilight went into bc of glimmer, there was a war and volunteers plus all the royal guard was there to fight in it PLUS the castle is freaking huge and the princesses aren't the only ones who reside there, and at times there's can be hundreds hosted. And there is always the potential of all kinds of supernatural beings threatening canterlot so it makes sense that they are prepared.

Instead of makin lots of soldiers look alike. Would it be much more cost efficient to simply make "shadowclones" of a few?

Think about it, the reason why the guards are so useless is because there really only are a handful of them. The rest are copies to make it look like they have a big army.

Like how they digitally turns a few dozen actors into an army of 10 000 men in movies.

The few times they actually are in useful it's because they are the real ones, that can actually do things, like take orders and stop people walking where they shouldn't. While the copies can do nothing more than stand around looking impressive.

Here's a thing if you look at luna's guards they are all bat ponies, and shining armour is also the colour sceem of all the other guards so what if they only hire ponies that look the part so that they look intimidating

And would said spell make them unable to talk, in the style of "Planet of the Apes", which would explain their lack of English in S1E1?

I think the Guards are for normal Ponys, like Reporters, Paparazi, Fans and other disturbing Ponys.
Aditional, they are ceremonial, like the Swiss Guards in the Vatican.
For bigger Threads, they need the much more powerfull Princesses.

The same look is of course the much easyer Work.
Its much easyer to create an Pony and its Movement, then just change the Colors.
The Animators have do the same with the BG Ponys.
If you look in Crowd Scenes, you see dome Ponys multiple Times, in some scenes I have see the same Pony 7 Times.
Eccept the Haircolor, the Thunderbolds look the same too, if in Costume.

I really pity & feel sorry for the Royal Guard and Wonderbolts for their failures in protecting Equestria. They should have better training, magic, and weapons so to better Aid the Mane 6 and the princesses during their time of need before resulting in peaceful solution's.

I told all mlp fan friends after seeing canterlot wedding that some of the guards are alicorns and when I looked deep in to the matter in a lot of episodes most of celestias guards are alicorns

Well, we breed horses in the real world, what if mind manipulating powers were used in equestria? Mabey there is an outside force that bred these ponies for the princesses, but by breeding them, rendered them useless, so they couldn't fight.just a thought!

Should the Royal Guards be modernized like should they Used guns or Muskets, or their uniforms, like the ones in the American Revolution or the Civil war and beyond ?

I think that the guards do have a proper job protecting the princesses but every threat has just been to hard or the princess got rid of the threat before I came to anything because many comics and fan videos show that shining armour goes to an academy and threw a lot of training before coming a guard.

I just think the guards haven't had any real screen time or opportunities to show us what they can do, as its based round 6 main mares.

I think it's because we are looking at them at their worst. The Royal Guards are probably just fine at stopping criminals, thieves, and looters, as well as taking down normal threats.
However, the show focuses almost exclusively on superpowered threats. Their leader, Shining Armor, may be a powerful unicorn battlemage. However, the main heroes and villains are effectively gods in this setting.

And while there are a large number of guards for guarding the palace, they are actually pretty paltry as a military force, as they were quickly overrun every time an actual army showed up to fight them. If we think of them as closer to a police force, it makes more sense. Your local cops can stop pretty much anything that would normally be thrown at them, but if an army showed up, they'd be almost useless.

As far as the appearance, the guard who removed his helmet and changed eye color pretty clearly demonstrates that their armor was glamoured.

When royal guards fail, you need heroes to step in. Very powerful heroes... Kinda like those from One-Punch Man would do. Or just pony Saitama himself.

Me theory was that when they put on the uniforms, they would all become the same colors. This would explain why the groups wearing different kinds of armer would be different colors accordingly. That would mean when they aren't on their shift, they wouldn't have to stay that color.

My opinion is there's a spell to change them but they have to get used to the castle first

Maybe the guards are the sons and daughters of princess celestia and princess luna. It could be that princess celestia gave foaled the guards that have the white coats and princess luna foaled the guards that have the darker coats. Princess celestia and princess luna could've mated with ponies prior to the events of mlp:fim. wouldn't you trust your children over strangers and would know that they more than likely wouldn't kill you. you might say that if that was the case they would be alicorns but we don't really know how genetics work in the mlp series. It could be that flurry heart could've been born a unicorn not a alicorn. If you look at the eyes of princess celestia, you can clearly see that she has purple eyes but she does have a white coat. Princess luna has blue eyes but she has a black coat. If you look at the royal guards they either have a coat that is closer to grey or a white coat. The eyes of the royal guards barely differ. If the guards are princess celestia's and princess luna's children then the reason why they are still guards even though they have shown to be incompetent is because that are related to princess celestia and princess luna.
