Orchestre de poche Fondé à la fin des années 1970 à Phoenix, en Arizona, ce groupe RIO perdu depuis longtemps s’appelait à l’origine Knebnagäuje (et a en effet sorti sa première bande démo en tant que telle) et n’a malheureusement jamais réussi à attirer beaucoup d’attention à l’époque. Le monde ne savait pas ce qui leur manquait; à savoir, certains des RIO les plus intenses, créatifs, densément assemblés jamais faits.
Ils sortent deux démos, l’une avant le début de leur carrière (Knebnagäuje, 1979) et l’autre vers la fin (Pocket Orchestra, 1984).
Ce domaine, soit dit en passant, a malheureusement été causé par le guitariste principal et fondateur du groupe Tim Parr, qui a subi une mort prématurée la même année. Si cela ne s’était pas produit, il est tout à fait possible que l’orchestre de poche serait devenu beaucoup mieux connu et apprécié au sein de la communauté RIO.
Pocket Orchestra a apparemment joué RIO pour l’amour de RIO, et chaque tour dans le livre a été utilisé à un effet maximal - signatures de temps complexes et des rythmes saccadés, instrumentation étendue qui comprenait la clarinette, saxophone et violoncelle, humour ludique, harmonies incongrues combinées avec des mélodies et des crochets étonnamment accrocheurs.

Biography
Pocket Orchestra Founded in the late 1970s in Phoenix, Arizona, this long-lost RIO band originally went by the name Knebnagäuje (and indeed released its first demo tape as such) and unfortunately never managed to attract much attention at the time. Little did the world know what they were missing; namely, some of the most intense, creative, densely assembled RIO ever made.
They released two demos, one before the beginning of their career (Knebnagäuje, 1979) and the other towards the end (Pocket Orchestra, 1984).
This area, by the way, was unfortunately caused by the lead guitarist and founder of the band Tim Parr, who suffered an early death in the same year. Had this not happened, it is quite possible that pocket orchestra would have become much better known and valued within the RIO community.
Pocket Orchestra apparently played RIO for love of RIO, and each trick in the book was used to maximum effect - complex time signatures and jerky rhythms, extended instrumentation that included clarinet, saxophone and cello, playful humor, incongruous harmonies combined with surprisingly catchy melodies and hooks.
Their sound was one that would maintain instant appeal for any self-respecting RIO fan and would immediately turn down almost everyone else. If I had to name names, I suppose their closest stylistic cousins would be the SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA family tree (pocket orchestra's hard-core qualities make them more like Zamla-era albums than earlier, lighter Samlas). Other influences include HENRY COW and UNIVERS ZERO. All the usual suspects, really. However, I must point out, pocket orchestra has a sound that is completely different from all these influences.
The two tapes the band managed to record during their active years were put together in 2005 on one CD (with incredibly high sound quality!) by MIO records, along with heartfelt notes from the band's friend and fellow RIO musician Scott Brazieal of Cartoon.
