A common complaint I hear about this episode is "It's obviously a prank or else why do the zombies go after Rainbow Dash?" I like to think that a dark way to look at it is Rainbow matched the color of the cookies to her mane colors, so the zombies think Rainbow is a giant cookie!
This is another one of those season 6 episodes with a weird continuity issue. As you said, Dash agreed with Pinkie way back in season 1 that it wasn't cool to prank Fluttershy because she's so sensitive, yet they've totally ignored that here in this episode's intro.
This episode was as close as MLP could get offifically to a zombie appocolypse. (Though clearly the concept of a zombie exists in this world as Spike mentioned them all the way back in Zecoras first episode, Bridle Gossip.)
While Rainbow did need to learn a lesson here, the prank against her was more in the vein of psychological trauma, and thus a little extreme. There could've been a better way to deal with this.
Imagine if she got trauma from this incident and in like an alternate universe of the show there were some episodes that dealt with rainbow dashes trauma of the prank. Oh well I'll just keep dreaming then
01:45 It was Pinkie who said that, stopping Rainbow Dash from pranking Fluttershy. 03:10 The title is a reference to the zombie movie "28 Days Later" ;) 05:20 That sounded like if she were inside that cake :D 05:20 I mean, FREE CAKE :g 05:50 That would be something: manipulating Applejack into pranking herself ;) 09:17 Rainbow Dash, this is the best impersonation of a website I've ever seen :J 14:44 I absolutely love how they made the remaining couple of minutes of this episode :> The lighting, the background music, the overall mood... :> Gives me chills every time ;> And it looks like Spike was right after all back then in Season 1 when he said that zombie ponies exist :D
16:03 Unless they realize you don't have any cookies ;> 18:58 That's the thing with Rainbow Dash: she doesn't listen because of her overblown ego. And if you want to teach her a lesson, you need to employ the entire town into it. Like in the "Mare Do Well" episode. 19:04 It is, but now she is the butt of the joke. ;> It's the only way to let her experience that, otherwise she would never understand how it is like.
I see this episode as a better version as my least favorite episode, the mysterious mare do well. For a few reasons. 1- They tried talking with Rainbow Dash instead of passive aggression being their go-to. 2- Rainbow was really annoying, inconveniencing, and hurting others with her prank, not saving lives. 3- They stopped the prank when it was enough, instead of only stopping because Rainbow unmasked them, which was never intended to happen. Not the best episode, but still a pretty good improvement for me.
@Icy-be5vl rainbow literally put a brick in Mr cakes food, and put a very big rock on what big Mac was carrying, and probably his crotch was injured, which were both really dangerous. I'd say she got what she pretty much deserved.
I strongly disagree. The message of the episode is to not take pranks too far, but then Rainbow is made the antagonist when she is actually the only victim of a prank that went too far.
Put this episode in place of The Mysterious Mare Do Well with appropriate changes and it would be a lot better. My biggest gripe is Rainbow has largely moved beyond this by now. As a season 1 or 2 episode it would make a lot more sense.
In my opinion, this was a good episode but the thing about this episode is Rainbow's pranks were relatively harmless except for the skunk and brick ones. I understand she had to learn a lesson, but I think their prank on her was a little too far
with rainbow having such a gigantic ego, i'm not sure there would have been any other way to have her learn other than putting her in somebody else's shoes lol
Never understood why this episode was so hated. I get Rainow going too far in scaring Fluttershy, but if you think back to Griffin The Brush Off, the only reason she didn't prank her was because Pinkie said not too. Then, she just kinda agreed. But this is years later and Pinkie wasn't there to tell her not to. Also, she probably could have thought that after Nightmare Night in Scare Master, she could have accepted it as fair.
Rainbow's pranks were honestly not that bad. Sure, the brick and the skunk was fucked up, but drawing a caricature, making two clever cake designs, putting a bolder in the wagon, and somehow being about to dodge all those traps and get Applejack's bed into the pig pit while she was in it sleeping? Those are all hilarious, or if not, incredibly respectable pranks to be able to pull off. That takes god damn talent!
Not to mention that this episode was pretty well executed when it comes to animation, lighting, background music, building the tension, and all those little details that add up to the overall mood of a classic zombie movie, without actually being one ;) That was very creative, and I appreciate it a lot.
0:08 "I hear 'pranks' and I think back to that Pinkie/Rainbow Dash episode, back in season one... I cannot remember the name of that." Griffon the Brush-off, where we met our first griffon, Gilda.
This episode I hated because it’s like the writers forgot all of Rainbow’s character development. But then again it would have been better if they would have introduced the fact that they’ve been friends for way longer than any of the six, and that would’ve been a better excuse than just “you’re too easy”. I’m a lot like Rainbow Dash irl were I was very sport heavy, and absolutely loved being the best at the sports I played. Also loyalty is everything to me. Seeing them write Rainbow like this made me furious. It would have been better if Rainbow actually did something to destroy all the cookies before they revealed the zombies was a hoax. As a way to show she was more concerned about her friends because we all know she would do anything for them.
Way they did it was just fine. Remember that RD claimed to Like Pranks so it's not like they were pranking a prank hater or something. People need to stop overthinking things or they keep loosing the most obvious point :)
@Totally Scrooge Talking to her properly would have worked just fine. The message of the episode is to not take pranks too far yet they give the moral high ground to the only ones actually taking it too far, making Rainbow out to be the antagonist when she is actually the only victim .
When i watch this episode for the first time i was a little creepied because i thought that the zombie thing was real. I know i am stupid because i dont realise before the end of the episode, but i enjoy the episode.
21:40 - and that's why this episode is part of a 5-way tie for "worst episode of the series" which unfortunately, ALL have something to do with Dash being either an insufferable c--t, indecisive or part of a rivalry gone out of hand..
This episode did have some funny bits, but so many Bronies have considered this a mere re-hashing of "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well" - instead of just straight up telling Dash to knock off an annoying habit, they pull the Passive-Aggressive card and give her an inferiority complex, or in this case, scare the shit out of her, making her believe she caused legitimate harm to ponies when she didn't mean to.
They should have done something similar to Where the Apple Lies where it's a flashback showing the dangers of taking pranks to far and showcasing how the whole town came together to teach Rainbow a lesson.
Friendship is Product Tampering. 13:16 Wait, did they go all the way back to AJ's farm for a sale, or did Big Mac move out and get an apartment in town?
I wish gilda came in and scared everybody that pranked rainbow dash and if gilda had scared them I would laugh because rainbow my favorite and it pissed me off when they pranked her gilda is my favorite too
