Damn Windows XP, it was so awesome that you could basically mess up the entire operating system, and all it took was to boot the CD, select "repair" and it reinstalled the OS without deleting your files or settings keeping even the drivers and programs... i guess it was for security reasons but it saved me a lot of time back in the days

I did this once (by accident) on a physical host computer on win98 and it worked just fine. the only thing that happened was that some things were duplicated, like when you put "Send To" appeared two desktops, two mails, etc. I didn't need to tweak any registry entries. I just executed the setup and it started fine.

Funny story:
This same thing happened to me back when I wanted to install XP for the first time.
As I stupidly hit Enter when it prompted me to press any key to open to cd/dvd and installed Windows XP FOUR TIMES
And when I realised it, it was too late
The very first XP lost its Luna theme and lost other major components too.
Guess I have waaay more to learn, too

I have been using Windows XP since 2009, but I haven't even thought about that idea. As far as I know, Windows XP uses good old NT technology, so you can perform things like that on every NT-based Windows (I don't count Windows 9x, 'cause they aren't "evolved" enough to be like that). I would rather use Windows 2000 to do this, but its "OOBE" isn't OOBE itself. So, how can I install Windows 2000 over Windows 2000? Please help me

You want it? You get it:
- Press WINDOWS + R:
- Enter the following: "sc stop themes"
- If you want it to be permanent, you have to set the "Themes" service in the Windows service management to Manual.

Explanation:
Strictly speaking, this is not the classic design. You cannot choose it either, because this is an emergency design that is only there to be used if for any reason all other themes cannot be displayed. It is not intended for everyday use. It is quite possible that some applications cannot be used at all with this theme.

i DID install xp over xp some time ago, it was win 98, xp installed as upgrade, early xp with no integrated service packs, or firewall, etc. , something went wrong when installing something else so tried reinstalling xp ,as upgrade again, running from xp , and seemed to work ok, ?!

if for some reason you dont want to break your windows xp installation, getting to that setup is as easy as exiting it. by pressing shift + f10 you can start up command prompt in the oobe, and you can also start regedit. start regedit, then navigate over to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > Setup then set the SystemSetupInProgress value to 0, set the SetupType to 0, then set the CmdLine to blank. then start task manager and kill the setup process. this will reboot you into a system with a fallback theme, but all you need to do is restart to get back into a working system. you might get one or two errors, in my case i only got one, but hey, the os still worked!
