Well, I haven't heard new pony music in a long, long while, which is something I may have to correct sometime soon. I see in my notifs a new Replacer song and go "Well, why not, especially with the subject matter at hand, let's see what goes on."
And then suddenly I'm hit with an upbeat 60's like song that is so happy and good and hits so many of my "yes" things in a song and I am sooooo down for it. I especially love that, of all things, you're called "Replacer" and here we are with an image that perfectly encapsulates that, almost. That's a hell of a thing to go on for a song that's releasing when the finale is about to come.
Nice work man. Cheered up my whole damn day just from this, so I thank you for that. Onto more discoveries, relationships and music. Both new and old.
This is so good! Your music is always so interesting, with so many layers to the music, and lyrics that don't fall to the standard tripe. I love it so much! Another instant favorite.
It's like seargent pepper's lonley heart's club band had a foursome with a day in the life, pony and electric lights orchestra. It's so good it's sick. Plagued with a nice progressive structure and that nice major vibe
Hey. You appear to read your comments, so I just wanted to chime in with the rest: I've been here since the very beginning of FiM and this marks a somewhat bittersweet endpoint for me (and many others), even if I've been pretty divorced from the show over the last several years. Throughout it all, though, you've been one of my absolutely favorite parts of the fandom, and it almost goes without saying that this song is absolutely fantastic! In particular, I love the chord structures and the harmonies in the voices and organ.
Ironically enough, of all the artists I know, you might be the most impossible to replace :) Thanks again for all the years of wonderful music, and regardless of whether you move on from pony or shift to something else, I will always be there, eagerly listening.
Such an inspiring and hopeful tune. Show wise im a tad behind and not up to date but the theme makes me remind the time with your music. I still occasionally jam out to Cerulean Blue or Let 'em in in my car. These songs started my love for the music community makes. And you still deliver unique songs for us all to enjoy. Thank you.
Pony is alive lively living and active. Pony is alive lively living and active. We all collectively create the world with our thoughts. C'mon everybody!
So glad to see another song from you before the finale. I haven't watched the show since season four, but I've always loved your music. It reminds me of all my happy memories of the show. Thank you for sharing your talent!
I already said my initial piece about this track on Twitter, but having listened probably 20 times since then and really letting the lyrics sink in...
It's amazing how you captured exactly how I've come to feel about the show ending. I have no idea if this is how you meant it or not, but here's what I've got:
You lead in with a pretty tense intro, backed by a spooky organ playing, for all we know, a funeral dirge, and then all of a sudden... so much cheer. The rest of the song carries through it a playfulness that demands a bobbing head and the erasure of any sort of frown from one's face.
We're encouraged to take our time now that all is said and done, but... hey, don't you realize? Just like school, we've graduated, and now it's time to go. "Didn't you know the deal"?
What I think is super clever about the chorus bit is that you say "don't lose your head... thinking pony is dead"... but then a whole chorus of happy voices are chanting "pony is dead!" What's up with that? I interpret as... yes, the show is "dead", so to speak, but that's not a reason for despair. Our journeys and memories continue. "Your time will come along again."
The other interesting thing is that you mention a choice. I was just thinking this evening -- when the show ends, do we just look back and remember? Or do we look forward and attack new challenges with our past experiences? I suspect this song talks about something similar: "your time will come along again".
And the last calm bit gets me every time. I would have never expected the "something that never ends" to be "life" -- with these songs it's almost always something like the fandom, or our love for the show, or whatever. That stuff all lives on, too, but you touch on exactly what all of this is in service of -- a happy, joyous life for each of us. "It doesn't have to be perfect, as long as you have your friends."
So thank you for giving us an anthem for life after MLP. I can all but guarantee that this will be the first thing I listen to when I finally watch the finale, and it'll be the most fitting piece of music for the occasion I could have ever imagined.
(also I will never not smile at "BE A QUADRUPED! Be a quadruped! Be a quadruped, be a quadruped!")
it's very moving to see somebody take this much time over deconstructing something of mine, and it's nice to see evidence that the words resonate
Your interpretation is completely valid - when I write words, my aim is usually to try to set up an outline which a listener can flesh out with that which is most important to them - I could try to dictate how I feel, but how you feel is bound to be much more interesting (to you)
having said that... in order to get the ball rolling on this, I decided to write mainly to myself, since I'm the only person I would presume to deliver a lecture to. I think I'm saying, I can find the bright light in myself and pay it forward if I can just get my act together. And anyway, things come and go in cycles. Bake a cake. Don't be paralyzed by the fear of mistakes. Sing, be playful, go where the fun is. Laugh in the face of danger. Et cetera. :>
@replacer That makes a lot of sense. I have noticed that your lyrics do like to leave a lot up for interpretation -- I've been trying to pin down some kind of meaning for The Last One Left and In Defence of Madness for ages, and can't put anything into words despite how much those songs also resonate with me -- and I'm a big fan of that concept of 'the death of the author', as it seems you are too ;)
That said, that explanation makes so much sense! To play and experiment in a creative space without fear is certainly another message I should take to heart as I work on my own creative pursuits -- and it seems like every creative decision in this song is aimed towards that playfulness. I think that's one of the things that really makes this song shine.
Thanks so much for sharing your side of the story here, replacer!
@h2g2guy 'in defence of madness' was just bleakness, I had a very pessimistic outlook in 2015 (which turned out to be completely justified, but now that it's come true, being a light in the darkness is somewhat more important to me)... 'the last one left' sounds like trying to pull myself out of that mire to some extent, but I feel like the very last line of that is as good as my lyrics have ever gotten, and a good year before anybody was talking about fake news
@replacer It's not every day you get a chance to peer into the mind of one of your favorite artists ;)
It's incredible how you were able to turn your pessimism into such a work of art with "Madness". I always loved the Cerulean Blue reference in there; I think it's because of how it's able to take such a cheerful memory and flip it on its head into a regret. The other bit that really stuck with me is the 'no eucatastrophe' verse, which really cements the endless hopelessness of the rest of the track (and also taught me an excellent word, haha).
It's interesting to me that you describe "The Last One Left" as pulling yourself out of the mire -- I always felt the song was about power or inner strength in some way, but what persistently intrigued me was that the second verse almost seemed... thankful, somehow? Like, as if the narrator was ultimately glad that "you held my head against the flame and made me give my crown to you". Perhaps because in the first verse, the narrator seems to imply that he's the last "enemy" left in a struggle against himself. Anyway, the last line (and the entire last verse for that matter) is incredible and almost prescient for sure -- but don't sell yourself short! From this fan's humble perspective, you've only improved with every single step along the way. Which is why I'm eternally excited to see what comes next :)
This conversation has led to me listening through a good portion of your older work, and as I teared up a bit to the line "I know one day you're gonna fly" in "Song for an Earth Pony", I realized that it's 3am in my time zone and I should probably retire for the night, haha.
Thanks again so much for taking the time to chat tonight. It's been the highlight of my week ;)
I can't stop listening to this. Your music is always so dynamic and layered, and your lyrics and word choice are, as always, gripping and new. Thank you!
@Super Trampoline the Bat Pony The piano melodies and high vocal notes around the start of the song reminded me of Elton John. It's all just very 1970s.
No words... Listened to it a couple times and it's easily my favorite song from 2019. The vibe and sound you capture with your instrumentation and vocals is surreal. Thanks.
you know, i don't think i liked this song too much when i first listened to it, i thought the secondary singer was too... "silly", i guess? But as i listened to it more, i really got a feel for it, and now it's probably one of my favorite songs of yours. It doesn't have to be 100% serious, because life isn't 100% serious, and being silly doesn't mean that what you have to say isn't valid or useful or authentic or whatever. In fact, the boisterous silliness and catchy energy of the main part of the song makes that last quiet section hit just that much harder!
augh, i could keep writing about this for a while, but i don't think anyone wants to read that, lol. Great stuff man, the wait is always worth it.
i was never a fan of pony music in the old days, but i really missed out when it came to you. you're music is incredible. thank you so much for all the effort you put into it!
Now this... this is one of those "instant favourite" songs that come along but rarely. As well as the other bands mentioned by others (Beatles, ELO etc) I definitely think there's a hint of Kinks in here, especially the "Don't you lose your head" sections. And since I love the Kinks, that's another plus! :)
You're the only Brony musician I still listen to, and I'll keep listening as long as you keep up the bops. I honestly wish all music sounded like this.
I so loved this during my listen of the album <3 And that title too, instantly gave me "rock is dead, long live rock" vibes! SO very well said with all those meaningful lyrics!! I so approve of the message here <3 And that musical style, such a bliss, and so tasteful <3 Let's keep playing our song, and spread smiles to the world, and the values that this show taught us, forever <3 Listen to my song <3
When G4 finale was aired, I was proud. From every character growing throughout the series. For us bronies meeting at conventions. For the creators making music I like to annoy my friends with. Great memories were forged in the wild ride of a fandom. Today G5 was released, and I'm ready for it all again. Many things will be different this time, but I'm sure we can make it just as awesome as the previous decade. So Thank you, for the decade of Pony. and, Here we go again.
Your songs always seem to have such a clear ideas and messages to me despite their somewhat nebulous diction. They have also always come at a time in my life where they make the most sense. So I thank you very much for what you do and I hope you continue to do it in the future.
i just found this and my good love. you got a top voice how have i never come across you. keep up the great work lad. the world misses a sound like this these days
It was a good , long run. I may have joined this fandom a bit late but I think I've made a good decision to stay in the fandom for stuff just like this. Something that connects to me that the mainstream media can't do ❤ loving it & keep it up man! 🙂👏🏼
the youtube algorithm punishes channels like mine that upload sporadically, so my numbers are always a bit low. I'm still happy for all the support I get :>
Gen 4 may be over, but where was it written that the Brony Community is confined to that? I’m willing to bet that Gen 5 will come with a whole new renaissance of creativity.
Feels silly to say I was moved to tears by a pony fansong, but in all fairness, it's a REALLY good pony fansong. The whole ending bit is so soft and reassuring-- "your time will come along again".... viva la G4. Let's hope G5 brings even more new friends and good times.
9 years man. Weird thinking about it, but honestly, that was a great time. I should get more involved in a community like that again, those were amazing years, especially 2011-2014 was mind-blowing stuff, a feel of community that I doubt I'll ever experience again. But you never know, right? :D
Wow so great, and catchy ! :D lot of different moments, and those background voices, hay yeah ! :D I wish to do some collab with you one day, I just so much love your voice! :3 /)
Now that we're here, will you still upload to this channel? Doesn't have to be MLP-related. There's a vibe in your songs I can hardly find elsewhere and I don't wanna miss that. Great tune as always =)
I expect to keep going, I want to keep improving and figuring out what I'm doing and it means a lot to have people showing up to listen along, you all deserve more 💙
I knew that this song was on one of the recent-ish Ponies@Dawn by name, but haven't actually (at least to a degree I remember) listened to until it just now came up in the amazing birthday pony mixtape my amazing Brony friend Josiah made for me since my birthday was on the 19th, and now I'm tripping on edibles and listening to this inconceivably good song for the first time and before I even looked to see what song was playing, I knew in a flash that this had that one-of-a-kind indefatigable Replacer magic flowing through it, especially once your ineffable vocals dropped so lovingly into the mix. You carried me upon a preternatural odyssey of sonic joy, effortlessly traipsing from Beatles to ELO to Queen and then seamlessly back to that unmistakable prestidigitation that some call divine, but I call replacer.
Ponies are not dead they are legends and legends never die .ps legends never die is a song .pss this fandom is still very alive and ponies are too I will not let them & this fandom die will you ? like this comment if you agree .
here we are in the future

0 likesAnd I'm pretty sure I will not stop any time soon
Whoa, this is some pretty sweet tune! Really love the ELO vibes here
0 likesIt was a good , long run. I may have joined this fandom a bit late but I think I've made a good decision to stay in the fandom for stuff just like this. Something that connects to me that the mainstream media can't do ❤ loving it & keep it up man! 🙂👏🏼
0 likesAagggghh! I was so excited to see this on the album! You're definitely my favorite artist!
0 likesAnd how dead was your falsetto after recording this?
Replies (4)
it was a lot of recording to be sure, I think I survived just barely..
1 like@replacer If you don't mind me asking, what do you when you aren't making music for the pony masses?
0 likes@farrand 5008 I have a day job as a developer, nothing special haha

the youtube algorithm punishes channels like mine that upload sporadically, so my numbers are always a bit low. I'm still happy for all the support I get :>
5 likesGen 4 may be over, but where was it written that the Brony Community is confined to that? I’m willing to bet that Gen 5 will come with a whole new renaissance of creativity.

11 likesHow can I get on hello pinkie pie?
0 likesExcellent. Gonna be listening to this one for a while to come.
1 likeDon't ever change replacer we need you <3
0 likesFeels silly to say I was moved to tears by a pony fansong, but in all fairness, it's a REALLY good pony fansong. The whole ending bit is so soft and reassuring-- "your time will come along again".... viva la G4. Let's hope G5 brings even more new friends and good times.
0 likes9 years man.
0 likesWeird thinking about it, but honestly, that was a great time.

haha, I was waiting for somebody to suggest that
2 likesNow that we're here, will you still upload to this channel? Doesn't have to be MLP-related. There's a vibe in your songs I can hardly find elsewhere and I don't wanna miss that. Great tune as always =)

0 likesI love this
2 likesI knew that this song was on one of the recent-ish Ponies@Dawn by name, but haven't actually (at least to a degree I remember) listened to until it just now came up in the amazing birthday pony mixtape my amazing Brony friend Josiah made for me since my birthday was on the 19th, and now I'm tripping on edibles and listening to this inconceivably good song for the first time and before I even looked to see what song was playing, I knew in a flash that this had that one-of-a-kind indefatigable Replacer magic flowing through it, especially once your ineffable vocals dropped so lovingly into the mix. You carried me upon a preternatural odyssey of sonic joy, effortlessly traipsing from Beatles to ELO to Queen and then seamlessly back to that unmistakable prestidigitation that some call divine, but I call replacer.

I am ridiculously and almost inconceivably verbose when I'm stoned. Good song though!
0 likesCouldn't agree more. This song is a trip!
1 likeWow I was really high when I wrote this. Hope it didn't come off too weirdly. Still a great song though.
0 likesReplacer, you're being charged with necromancy. Raising the dead to make them compose music is against the law.

1 likeI have no idea why I get Supertramp vibes from this. Maybe its the repeating of lines in the different tone of voice.
