@@renakunisakibecause C:/Windows/Dockingstation still exists, whats causing the option to show up is the file in the folder, the file is called "eject_pc.smb" SMB stands for Start Menu Button. So the button still exists.
It probably shows up on plain desktop PCs because changing the icon causes the Start menu to be refreshed, but the code to hide hardware-unsupported items (Eject on desktops, Suspend on non-APM machines) isn't re-run.
Was pretty obvious due to the icon too :) I have an old Tecra 510 that has the docking connector, though never had a station so always wondered how it deals with the fact a lot of peripherals get gone - that's not a modern USB or hot-swap SATA where you just pull various adapters and harddrives out of the system :)

It's pretty interesting, it has integrated controllers for floppy drives, IDE, SCSI, integrated networking, integrated sound, and even 2 full size ISA slots! the eject pc option was added in the final phases of the development, when you connected your pc to a laptop the system would do a set of actions that would trigger the option to eject the pc. weirdly enough in some versions of windows this action was just to reassign the icon of any shortcut to calc.exe, thats why the options showed up when he did that.

The “eject PC” button is to safely eject dockable laptops. Some of the docks have hardware that doesnt like being disconnected and other docks actually mechanicaly eject the machine from the dock.

2:49 that isnt an easter egg. Its a bug due to the fact that Windows is based off of MSDOS, and Con is one of the paths used for getting connected devices. You cant use it in a Windows filesystem. Kind of like how Linux uses /dev/ and /mnt/ for devices, Windows uses names like /prn/ and /con/ instead.

@AwesomeBot - In msdos the "console device" was called CON - you could actually create a text file using 'copy con <filename>' and then typing the files contents, ending with, if I'm remembering correctly, a press of ctrl+d to signal "end of file"
@@bonkmaykr that's not correct, windows 10 runs on the NT kernal, which is quite different from the DOS kernal. The only reason restricted names were kept was for backwards compatibility

Geometry Dash Chaoz, Tuna is right, it refers to connected devices. The console in windows is referred to as “cmd” and back in ms-dos as “command”, never referred to as “con”
To modify text in the command prompt, you would need to use batch, VBScript or another language with read/write terminal commands.
Pretty sure con comes from console, you can use it instead of a filename to input/output to the console (like copy con whatever.txt, to type into a file).

The CON one is a bug I'm sure ("CON" and a dozens or so other names have had special behaviours as filenames a since even before MS DOS had directories, and it looked like they forgot to handle it properly in that one part of Windows) and 10x zoom was probably something they tried out and decided not to include and thought they had removed, and "Bush hid the facts" is a limitation of heuristics-based encoding detection, and notepad /.setup is obviously a bug, and the way to kill winlogon is unintended, and the games things all seem to be to help test the game but... actually you're right there are a lot of plain bugs here.

I actually got the flight simulator easter egg to work in Excel. One you missed was the 3D Text screensaver easter egg. If you put the word "volcanoes" or "volcano" into it, it would rotate through a list of actual volcano names. I think the phrase "Not evil" also produced some other result in the screensaver.
Well on 1511 or 1507,you can run "notepad /.setup" but the easter egg will not even work. Instead it will only stand there. To close that, Right click on the taskbar, then click "X Close Window". Click that and it will close the program. You cant click " X", so do that.

"Bush hid the facts" is a bug. That pattern of 4, 3, 3, 5 letter words separated by spaces confuses it into thinking the file is in a different encoding. If you have the proper fonts installed, the text will show as Chinese characters, but it's just gibberish. "This app can break" does it too.
C:\con\con is also a bug. You can't have a file named con, because DOS used that name for special purposes. Using just C:\con will give an error message, but for some reason C:\con\con crashes the filesystem driver.
"Eject PC" is meant to eject a laptop from a docking station. I don't know why it shows up when you do that, probably a bug.
"/.setup" is strange, looks like it crashes notepad? Do you have a file with that name? If you're running the VM on Linux, note that files beginning with a dot are normally hidden.
Eject PC is definitely a bug. Same thing happens in Windows 95 with the Active Desktop installed. The Start Menu refreshes and shows you options that are normally hidden. Eject PC should normally only show up on a docked laptop.
The first one is incorrect. It's an easter egg. The ./setup one is for playing tricks on colleagues. That's why it's called setup. You set it up to trick someone ;-)
#13 - the "Death Directory" is not an easter-egg - you're trying to use a windows reserved filename (literally a device name included for backwards compat w/DOS) - open "command prompt", type "copy con example.txt" and hit enter. Up hntil you type a "ctrl+d" (if memory serves) comnand will ve in "example.txt". "CON", "PRN" and a few others have been there for ages
Fun fact: The C:\con\con bug still works to some extent in Windows 10. Typing C:\con in the run box quits the run box and opens it again. C:\con\con displays this error: "C:\con\ is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or Internet, and then try again. If the location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted." This would seem like a common error but actually it isn't. Try typing in a directory that doesn't exist in to the run box (for example C:\potato) and this is the error you get: "Windows cannot find 'C:\potato'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
Typing 'C:\con' in CMD presents this error: ' ' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. (Yes that ' ' is empty) Strangely, typing 'C:\con\' with the slash after it doesn't work.

Eject PC isn't really an easter egg but rather to disable the docking station attached to the system to be safely removed. I see it on my Windows 98 machine every time I open the start menu because it's connected to a dock that provides the DVD and floppy drives. Also my machine runs Windows 98 SE.
One downside of having a sane window manager like DWM instead of whatever the fuck XP and older NTs were doing is that misbehaving windows don't leave trails because things are properly isolated and no one window can mess everything up. I wonder if there's a way to enable that in DWM?

"Bush hid the facts" is actually a Unicode detection bug in Notepad, and the squares are Chinese characters if you have the language pack installed. Any 4-3-3-5 combination can cause Notepad to think the file is 2-byte Unicode encoded, and save it as such. Try "Youu wan sum fuck?" or even "aaaa bbb ccc ddddd" and it'll do the exact same thing. It was fixed in Vista onwards.

CON is a reserved filename in FAT filesystems, used for the console device. For example you can create files from the console input with COPY CON MYFILE.TXT (Use Ctrl+D to terminate.)

No, it is a legitimate option. If you had a laptop in a docking station, Eject PC allowed you to safely remove the laptop from its dock. Some docks would physically eject the laptop, others required you to press a release button. My Dell Latitude D610 shows this in XP, albeit renamed to Undock Computer.

It is a bug. The OS is meant to prevent you from reading or writing a file with this name (or also prn, nul, com1, lpt among others). But MS never protected more than one iteration so multiple restricted names would cause vfat.vxd to crash. They later patched this in an update because some sneaky people inserted this in web pages. Simply visiting the page would crash your system.

Most likely to be memory corruption in the shell (explorer.exe process). Manual memory management, like you do in C, is a bitch to get right.

You cant use it in a Windows filesystem. Kind of like how Linux uses /dev/ and /mnt/ for devices, Windows uses names like /prn/ and /con/ instead.

Pretty sure con comes from console, you can use it instead of a filename to input/output to the console (like copy con whatever.txt, to type into a file).

If you have the proper fonts installed, the text will show as Chinese characters, but it's just gibberish. "This app can break" does it too.
23 likesC:\con\con is also a bug. You can't have a file named con, because DOS used that name for special purposes. Using just C:\con will give an error message, but for some reason C:\con\con crashes the filesystem driver.
"Eject PC" is meant to eject a laptop from a docking station. I don't know why it shows up when you do that, probably a bug.
"/.setup" is strange, looks like it crashes notepad? Do you have a file with that name? If you're running the VM on Linux, note that files beginning with a dot are normally hidden.

7 likes#13 - the "Death Directory" is not an easter-egg - you're trying to use a windows reserved filename (literally a device name included for backwards compat w/DOS) - open "command prompt", type "copy con example.txt" and hit enter. Up hntil you type a "ctrl+d" (if memory serves) comnand will ve in "example.txt". "CON", "PRN" and a few others have been there for ages

This would seem like a common error but actually it isn't. Try typing in a directory that doesn't exist in to the run box (for example C:\potato) and this is the error you get:
"Windows cannot find 'C:\potato'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
Typing 'C:\con' in CMD presents this error:
' ' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. (Yes that ' ' is empty)
Strangely, typing 'C:\con\' with the slash after it doesn't work.

This is not an easter egg, it's a feature that allows ACPI shutdown, or if you don't have ACPI, it will shut down Windows so you can safely power off your computer.

You can access con by unplugging the ntfs drive and connecting it to a linux based fat32 distro and then plug the drive with ntfs in and boom you have access

0 likes"Bush hid the facts" is actually a Unicode detection bug in Notepad, and the squares are Chinese characters if you have the language pack installed. Any 4-3-3-5 combination can cause Notepad to think the file is 2-byte Unicode encoded, and save it as such. Try "Youu wan sum fuck?" or even "aaaa bbb ccc ddddd" and it'll do the exact same thing. It was fixed in Vista onwards.

No, it is a legitimate option. If you had a laptop in a docking station, Eject PC allowed you to safely remove the laptop from its dock. Some docks would physically eject the laptop, others required you to press a release button. My Dell Latitude D610 shows this in XP, albeit renamed to Undock Computer.

It is a bug. The OS is meant to prevent you from reading or writing a file with this name (or also prn, nul, com1, lpt among others). But MS never protected more than one iteration so multiple restricted names would cause vfat.vxd to crash. They later patched this in an update because some sneaky people inserted this in web pages. Simply visiting the page would crash your system.
