yeah, pentesting o.s.-es leave certain things open so their tools can work. better to build your own hardened os separate from a default pentesting o.s. then switch oses depending on what you need to be done.
Kali is a lightweight distro (great for VMs) and it already comes loaded with lots of programs you'll need to pen-test, RE, scanning, etc. You could use regular Ubuntu or Mamjaro and download all the tools you need. But kali already comes with it.
