@@Gamer-Jeet You know you can easily bypass those requirements as long as the computer supports 64 bit instructions and some other more modern stuff like PAE or SSE2?
The trick to figuring out the minimum memory on old NT versions was to clone the line in the boot ini which you normally used to start Windows NT and add a MAXMEM switch, specifying how much memory you wanted to allocate in megabytes. Decimal values actually worked, so you could actually start some versions with less than 6 MB, but not much lower.
Look at those disk-usage numbers, 70-100%. It's swapping virtual-memory non-stop. If it's a hard-drive, that's going to make it slower than molasses in winter. If it's an SSD, it's going to wear it out faster than a speeding bullet.
If this was done on real hardware it depends. The system may need more memory to run if the GPU does not have dedicated graphics and needs to use the system memory instead.

I see many people mad at Windows 11 RAM requirement, but I think it makes perfect sense. I wouldn't expect the minimum requirements to mean "it's enough to boot the system", but rather "it's enough to provide a decent and usable experience". Considering Windows 10 already ran extremely poorly with less than 4GB of RAM, imagine how bad it would be to daily run Windows 11 with that? Many people also forget that these requirements are important to force OEMs to stop selling devices which can barely run the OS (Windows 10 budget laptops with 2GB RAM and slow HDDs were not an uncommon sight, unfortunately).
@@pythogron well obviously if he's comparing iphones to androids, he would be talking about at least mid range to high range androids, not low end ones, as apple hardly makes any budget phones. My nothing phone 2a (~$300) has 8 gigs of ram, and the $325 phone 2a has 12 gigs.

Almost all the lag was gone, the only issue was the hard drive, sadly Windows 10 was not made with a HDD in mind so the only thing I could do is to buy an SSD
I do want to make another comment that yeah, I do hope Microsoft significantly inflates the system requirements to stop OEM’s from making shitty low end laptops that barely run anything.
I used to have some HP AIO during lockdown period (aka 2020). It had a Ryzen 3, 8GB of memory (2GB of that were used by integrated graphics) but a pretty slow (5400 RPM) hard disk. It ran Windows 10.

@@melomelo420 windows adapts to different memory sizes and if it uses 4gb idling on a 16gb machine that doesn't mean it won't work on a 4 gb machine, because, in fact, in can work even on a 2gb one. If windows sees that you have a lot of free ram it doesn't just waste it, it preloads some files you might use(like system applications) and that makes the pc faster. But whenever you'll need more resources for a task, it'll free memory up for you. If it wouldn't, you'd get an OOM bsod all the time.
Windows 10 ain't that bad under 4gb ram it also depends on the architecture you're using. I have a low end pc from 2018 that has 4gb ram I bet it would run Windows 11 fine.

What I am classifying as reasonable in my comment is the listed requirement for Windows 11 — there's no point in saying that only X amount of RAM is needed if, truly, that would lead to a terrible experience. @@randomgamingin144p I don't doubt that. An SSD of any kind can go a long way to speeding up an old system. Put an SSD in an old MacBook Pro (2010/2012) and it'll run like a much more recent MacBook Air for light tasks.

Just to be clear, I would never use a 1GB ram PC as a daily driver. Even 4GB is not enough for that, but even just for testing purposes, I GB would be my minimum.
4GB just ensures it won't be trashing the page file to death, which is why it was so slow at 512MB.
Windows will happily work with pretty much arbitrary amounts of memory once it's booted up, but it will do so by using disk as RAM, so painfully slow on an SSD, and a completely slideshow on an HDD.
Microsoft basically don't want 11 to be another Vista where people put it on way underpowered machines. So they make the minimum requirements to make sure it will actually run decently, and people don't go "wow 11 so slow what a bloated piece of crap!" after updating from 10, by effectively preventing them from updating at all.

4GB is the minimum requirement for it to run well . I guess 512MB allows it to run the most important system services and everything (and Windows is in the low memory services mode, where system services are merged into fewer svchost.exe processes with many services like before Windows 10, rather than multiple separate ones which I believe only happens if you have at least like 3GB of RAM by default)
Theory: Maybe Windows 11 minimum amount of RAM is between 256 and 512 Mb. I remember in older version of VMware that the recommended amount of RAM to Windows 2000 is 384 Mb of RAM and personally, I like to install Win 9x/2000 with 444 Mb of memory. Maybe with the 4 Mb of memory changes, we can find the minimum amount of RAM and therefore, the limit .

Actually, 1 GB is 1000 MB, 1 MB is 1000 KB, and 1 KB is 1000 B. We GiB is the correct term for 8192 MiB of RAM being technical, but really only nerds care. Gb and Mb are usually only used for Internet speed, 1 Gb Ethernet being about 125 MB/s
I ran Windows 11 pro Ghost spectre superlite on a VM in proxmox, with 320 Mb of memory. Though had to use the GPU or else nothing would display just like when MR. Enderman ran with 256 Mb, but it was in windows 11. 384 Mb works without the GPU and is actually surprisingly good. If you can afford to move up to a staggering 448 Mb of ram, then I highly suggest running "Memreduct" and setting it to clean everything a couple times an hour. Though Memreduct also usesaround 1 Mb...

Really interesting video for showing the absolute minimum for RAM. I do believe Microsoft intentionally mandated 4GB of RAM for Windows 11 to discourage those with 32-bit computers from upgrading (since 32-bit computers can only support 4GB), but I think that this is kinda proof that its still possible to do so, with a lot of patience.

As for what PAE is for anyone wondering, it's bank switching. Meaning it swaps what exact 4GB chunk of RAM is connected to the CPU in a given moment. Which is also how most GB and all GBC cartridges work as the Gameboy/Color can only directly use 32KB of ROM at once.

I once ran Windows 11 on 48MB of RAM by putting it to its very core. However, that was a year ago, so I deleted the vm sadly. @@OGuiBlindao It's now a bit of a rusty memory, but I'll tell what I at least remember, I used Windows Validation OS, The lightest version of Windows 11 and boot it off an hdd, then I set a registry key to run it of native fullscreen cmd-mode instead GUI NT mode, then I copied the 32-bit remanets from Syswow64 in a regular Windows 11 installation, then I copied what NTDEV did in creating lightest version of Windows.
It is cool that you can do stuff like this in a vm, would be very time consuming to have to change a PC build with 500mb and 200mb and 100mb ram sticks

You can disable the page file easily, but you'd need to raise how much RAM is allowed to be used since what allows Windows to work at dramatically-small small memory limits is paging out as much as possible to the page file.

What is important to take away from this experiment is that at 4:30 during the successful 512 MB test, there is a total of 1.6 GB reported by the Task Manager as comitted memory.
So the recommended memory, as opposed to the minimum amount of 512 MB, should be at least 1,600 MB unless you accept unnecessary utilization of memory pages from the secondary Swap-file. Add some user applications and multi-tasking capabilities and we end up at 2 GB.
Sooo probably there will be some Chuwi branded tablet around there with 1 GB of RAM and running windows 11, but a 4 digit price tag workstation with 64 GB of RAM that ran almost every released version of NT can't because of a TPM. Given that the Vista fiasco was because of marketing hardware that didn't have enough power as "Vista Ready" they maybe are being a little too conservative this time
They have some software level restriction, it has nothing to do with the RAM capacity. If you really want to test out Windows 11 (maybe just for the look and feel), make your mind to use Tiny11 (Another Windows 11 but without those software restrictions like TPM etc. )
I don't know what I'm saying here, but is there a way to hardline the registry so it doesn't need to appear in RAM? like a text file it can read instead, or maybe just making the registry itself shorter/smaller in filesize?
Saw someone's analysis about Windows. Registry is like Window's Achilles heel. I don't remember what's the benefit but one of the main disadvantages is the data is loaded and stays there, which is the reason why we need to restart after installing Windows update.

Thought I'd mention this Modern versions of windows are actually terrible at memory management. You could give windows 10/11 like 128gb of ram and it would eventually manage to fill it up. It neglects properly cleaning up after processes finish running, it delays closing others, it's misusing the page file assigned, and the best one is that it very slowly memory leaks, so if you leave the OS with some software running for a week or two, it'll be using more and more ram until it runs out.
I'd like to see this done again, but without windows being able to use more virtual memory than physical memory available. I believe a lot of the reason it runs so slow is because the hard drive is being used as substitute virtual memory, whereas the operating system is using far more virtual addresses. This is also how you can use browsers like chromium which take up gigabytes on so little physical memory.

Because Enderman uses a CSM, Compatibility Support Module, or Legacy mode, it actually compatible with Windows 11 in 216 MB threshold. He's discuss 216 as 6³ a satisfying number.

It is using the disk as a memory or trying to use the disk because it has so little ram. So we can say you need some ram to initialize the disk as a ram then you are good to go

If windows 11 can runs at 256mb with no explorer.exe and can runs explorer and run decently well at 512mb, theoratically, the minimum ram that windows 11 can stably run is between 350 - 450, for my guess 356mb.

How to fix that BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO bsod (in my case it's green). I keep getting it every time I try to boot up my pc and it goes into automatic repair. From there I can't fix the startup problems. I tried uninstalling the updates but nothing, it just fails. I do have access to the files if I connect another drive and boot from it but there's so much stuff on the main one that I can't copy over. Also all of this happened because I shut it down completely late at night because while it was in sleep mode it was constantly turning itself on. I'll provide more info if needed

Decimal values actually worked, so you could actually start some versions with less than 6 MB, but not much lower.

I wouldn't expect the minimum requirements to mean "it's enough to boot the system", but rather "it's enough to provide a decent and usable experience". Considering Windows 10 already ran extremely poorly with less than 4GB of RAM, imagine how bad it would be to daily run Windows 11 with that? Many people also forget that these requirements are important to force OEMs to stop selling devices which can barely run the OS (Windows 10 budget laptops with 2GB RAM and slow HDDs were not an uncommon sight, unfortunately).

2 likes@@melomelo420 windows adapts to different memory sizes and if it uses 4gb idling on a 16gb machine that doesn't mean it won't work on a 4 gb machine, because, in fact, in can work even on a 2gb one. If windows sees that you have a lot of free ram it doesn't just waste it, it preloads some files you might use(like system applications) and that makes the pc faster. But whenever you'll need more resources for a task, it'll free memory up for you. If it wouldn't, you'd get an OOM bsod all the time.

What I am classifying as reasonable in my comment is the listed requirement for Windows 11 — there's no point in saying that only X amount of RAM is needed if, truly, that would lead to a terrible experience. But I also think it's lame instead of getting more optimized, or at least staying the same, Windows has been getting heavier as time goes on.

36 likesWindows will happily work with pretty much arbitrary amounts of memory once it's booted up, but it will do so by using disk as RAM, so painfully slow on an SSD, and a completely slideshow on an HDD.
Microsoft basically don't want 11 to be another Vista where people put it on way underpowered machines. So they make the minimum requirements to make sure it will actually run decently, and people don't go "wow 11 so slow what a bloated piece of crap!" after updating from 10, by effectively preventing them from updating at all.
@@paulstelian97 However, in reality, 8 GB is the lowest amount of RAM that is comfortable. 4 GB is bearable for light tasks, especially if you are running Windows from an NVMe SSD.

I guess 512MB allows it to run the most important system services and everything (and Windows is in the low memory services mode, where system services are merged into fewer svchost.exe processes with many services like before Windows 10, rather than multiple separate ones which I believe only happens if you have at least like 3GB of RAM by default)

0 likesI ran Windows 11 pro Ghost spectre superlite on a VM in proxmox, with 320 Mb of memory. Though had to use the GPU or else nothing would display just like when MR. Enderman ran with 256 Mb, but it was in windows 11. 384 Mb works without the GPU and is actually surprisingly good. If you can afford to move up to a staggering 448 Mb of ram, then I highly suggest running "Memreduct" and setting it to clean everything a couple times an hour. Though Memreduct also usesaround 1 Mb...

12 likes@@OGuiBlindao It's now a bit of a rusty memory, but I'll tell what I at least remember, I used Windows Validation OS, The lightest version of Windows 11 and boot it off an hdd, then I set a registry key to run it of native fullscreen cmd-mode instead GUI NT mode, then I copied the 32-bit remanets from Syswow64 in a regular Windows 11 installation, then I copied what NTDEV did in creating lightest version of Windows.

You can disable the page file easily, but you'd need to raise how much RAM is allowed to be used since what allows Windows to work at dramatically-small small memory limits is paging out as much as possible to the page file.

Given that the Vista fiasco was because of marketing hardware that didn't have enough power as "Vista Ready" they maybe are being a little too conservative this time

0 likesThey have some software level restriction, it has nothing to do with the RAM capacity. If you really want to test out Windows 11 (maybe just for the look and feel), make your mind to use Tiny11 (Another Windows 11 but without those software restrictions like TPM etc. )

Saw someone's analysis about Windows. Registry is like Window's Achilles heel. I don't remember what's the benefit but one of the main disadvantages is the data is loaded and stays there, which is the reason why we need to restart after installing Windows update.

0 likesModern versions of windows are actually terrible at memory management. You could give windows 10/11 like 128gb of ram and it would eventually manage to fill it up. It neglects properly cleaning up after processes finish running, it delays closing others, it's misusing the page file assigned, and the best one is that it very slowly memory leaks, so if you leave the OS with some software running for a week or two, it'll be using more and more ram until it runs out.

2 likesI'd like to see this done again, but without windows being able to use more virtual memory than physical memory available. I believe a lot of the reason it runs so slow is because the hard drive is being used as substitute virtual memory, whereas the operating system is using far more virtual addresses. This is also how you can use browsers like chromium which take up gigabytes on so little physical memory.

0 likesHow to fix that BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO bsod (in my case it's green). I keep getting it every time I try to boot up my pc and it goes into automatic repair. From there I can't fix the startup problems. I tried uninstalling the updates but nothing, it just fails. I do have access to the files if I connect another drive and boot from it but there's so much stuff on the main one that I can't copy over. Also all of this happened because I shut it down completely late at night because while it was in sleep mode it was constantly turning itself on. I'll provide more info if needed
