Hi I guess I'm a Theory Trained Person. I thought I'd share some of the technical names of things that Dodie talks about here, and maybe do some analysis too. (It also doesn't matter like she says, it's just fun for those who want to know)
@1:25 The rhythm/ accent pattern here is like a modified Bo Diddley beat. The first popular usage of it comes from a song from 1955 called Bo Diddley, by a guy called Bo Diddley.
@1:41 This verse chord progression is super beautiful for a lot of reasons! It starts in B major proper but actually borrows a lot from B minor as well. D#7 borrows its third (G, technically F double sharp) from B minor. That G comes back again as the third of the E minor chord at the end of the progression. There's also some great voice leading going on here. The fifth of B major is F#, which moves up nicely to the G in D#7, then up again to the G# in the E chord, and then back down to the G in the E minor chord. It's super smooth and wistful. It's the G borrowed from B minor that makes the verse sound so melancholy.
@3:09 You can write this lots of different ways, the easiest being Em/G. That just tells you that the G is the lowest note of the chord, instead of E like it would usually be.
@3:26 So this is a B minor but it also has an E (the 4th degree) and an A(the minor 7th) so I'd call it a Bm11 omit 9... Super complicated way of saying play B, D, E and A. You could also play it as a Bm7.
@3:29 I'd call this chord an Asus I think. The A note is on the bottom, and it contains the notes A, D, and E.
@3:33 Dodie doesn't play the 7th here, so I think this is just an E chord. I'll have to go listen to the finished song to double check though.
@4:06 There's no third in this B chord, so you can just call it a B5. The minor third is kind of implied though since we're firmly in the key of B minor.
@5:45 The term you're looking for is dominant seventh. :) Major third seventh describes it perfectly though. It's called a dominant seventh because it naturally comes out of the dominant (the fifth degree) of the major scale when you stack thirds.
@6:00 oh hey she talks about what I was saying about the E minor :) There's lots of ways to name it. Em7/G works well since she's playing a D.
@7:00 okay this whole section!! I'd just call those three chords Bm, Bm/A, and the Bm/G#. Slash chords make things super simple. The core "feeling" of this section is all B minor, it just has a bassline that moves, so that's all that needs describing, if that makes sense.
@7:28 I think Gmaj7 is the best way to write that! That C#/Db is just in the string melody on the record, so again I think the main feeling is Gma7, with just some C# peeking in now and again. You could write it as Gma7#11 maybe? But that sort of implies the lydian mode and we don't really need to get into that.
All this to say western music theory is just an old, super Eurocentric way of describing the relationships between different wavelengths of wiggly air. I know it frustrates and confuses a lot of people, but it's really just a lens we can use to look at the world of music. It's just a tool that can help us understand and talk to each other about the way music makes us feel.
Lots of love always Dodie! Congrats on another beautiful and relatable song.
Totally agree with the slash chords at 7:00. It’s just a descending bass part! If you had to write that with figured bass it would be a nightmare lol. Thank god for modern notation

@Mikael Johansson Nice one Mikael. I was considering doing something like this whilst watching the vid, then found you'd already done it :) I love the Gmaj7(#11) - I'd deffo call it that. dodie hears the textures so well.

I personally interpret the section you described at 7:00 as Bm11 -> Asus -> E9/G#, but maybe that’s partially because I don’t see that transition as having a super functional purpose as it ends up at the Gmaj7#11. I think the inclusion of the E in the third chord makes it definitively E9, as the only way I could consider it related to B would have to be described as Bm13 omit 7/9, which is kinda silly lol.
@Alex Andrade You're totally right. I was kind of going for the chords you'd see in a fake book though. Just the most practical way to play things while still getting the point across.
@Alex Andrade Agree. I made a similar observation elsewhere in the comments. E9/G#. The basic motion of Bm(something) to E(something) is such a staple in RnB and jazz. When repeated it's just a dorian vamp, and always sounds good.
"All this to say western music theory is just an old, super Eurocentric way of describing the relationships between different wavelengths of wiggly air" I don't know a lot of musical theory, but all I know is that this exactly sums it up. chef's kiss
Ok so this is probably hard for you to explain over the internet but I’m really struggling to sing along to this song on time. For some reason I can’t... HEAR the timing like I normally can? Can you please help explain the timing of the song?
@bert1029 I can see how that would be difficult! I'll see what I can do with a YouTube comment. This song doesn't have any instrument playing a backbeat or anything like that, the uke is supplying most of the forward momentum on the rhythm side of things. The song is around 115 beats per minute, so if you can get a metronome app or something to play 115bpm and then tap along with the song at that tempo, you might be able to feel the pulse a bit better. If we look at the first part of the melody, the word "I" should land OFF the beat, and the word "kissed" should land ON the beat. Maybe think about jumping off of the word "I" and landing on the word "kissed". The next phrase starts on the beat, there's no pickup like in the first phrase. Let me know if that helps
@Sofia kontomisios Just a tip for learning strumming patterns from videos. Slow the videos down and zoom in the strum hand. I don’t know the one for the road ones tho.

if anyone sees this, the strumming pattern in the verse is dd uu dd uu dd u for every chord, then repeat
Dodie, I honestly love that you don’t necessarily have the theory background to know what the chords are - you write so freely and create such interesting sounds and harmonic progressions because you aren’t locked into that western framework.
Also, most of jazz is just made up chords, so like, you’re good 👍🏼😅
Hi Dodie. You probably won’t see this but I love your music so much and it’s been such a comfort for me for years. Thanks for making such gorgeous songs ❤️
Figured I'd add my two cents to the whole music theory side of it since I guess I'm kinda a music theory person (I only speak piano though)...
5:47 Technically this chord is a secondary dominant borrowed from a relative key, so instead of calling it a III7 it should be called V7/vi. In classical theory this chord would be expected to resolve to the vi chord, which is G# minor in this case, but this is pop and so the IV chord commonly substitutes for that vi chord. Also interestingly since she established we're in B major, this chord would be spelled with an F double sharp instead of a G.
5:56 This would be called a iv chord since dodie's using modal mixture here and borrowing from the relative minor key. This is one of the reasons why when the song switches from major to minor it is almost unnoticeable, because she is already using chords from B minor. Also this minor plagal feel is incredibly compelling and leads naturally back to a B chord (in negative harmony, it is the negative version of the dominant chord).
6:06 Since the guitar is playing an E minor chord here, I'd lean towards calling this some sort of E chord such as Em7 instead of a G-based chord, but it really depends.
7:01 This progression I'm not 100% how to describe, but my best guess would be D2/B, D2/A, E7,9/G#.
7:22 This progression is just a Bm, Bm/A and Bm/G#. Modern notation makes this really easy, but this would be a headache in classical notation.
7:43 This chord is a GM7,#11 or if the E is involved then it's an Em7,9,#13/G. Getting some real Jacobean vibes from this one.
7:49 Just wanted to point out that if the previous chord is an Em chord, then the last three chords are a beautiful example of a circular progression where each chord is a fourth higher (or a fifth lower) than the next chord. Here it is Em to Bm to F#. Also a heartbreaking half cadence.
That's my analysis, thanks for much for an amazing song! :)
Oh, I was completely stressed out because of school and went to youtube and found this :) Thank you for bringing your creativity on this lovely evening and calming me down! you're amazing <3
Just had this playing in the background and not paying lots of attention so sorry if I get this a bit wrong but anyway - 6:24 Bm11 (you play the dominant 7th and the 11th) - at 7:30 it's a Gmaj7#11. The descending line thing some people call a "line cliché" or some people call it a CESH (Contrupuntal Elaboration of a Static Harmony). Sounds great, who cares what it's called.
Also 6:30 you could call it D/A (D over A) or D9/A...but given the context of the descending line I'd prob call it Bm11/A coz the point of that sequence is that the bass is descending while the top part of the harmony is static.
@doddlevloggle yeah exactly. Technically if you say Bm11 your implying that there's a dominant 7th in there too somewhere whereas if you say add4 or something like that you're kind of saying "don't add any other spicy extensions just that exact note". Ha! I'm sure someone will correct me on that with a more accurate definition.
Love this vid, very relatable frustration with the naming of things
in this amazing piano part I was waiting for: "okay, I need to call Jacob" moment or smth like that)) Anyway! Thank you for this absolutely beautiful song, the music video and THIS video and everything else!!! 💜
as someone learning how to play baritone uke I would love a uke version of this tutorial!!! although this song fills me with such ennui I probably shouldn't play/sing it too much for the sake of my daily functioning but I want toooooooo
Keep it up and welcome to the guitar community it sounds like. Just don’t hurt your fingers to much! Soreness while you build callouses is normal. Pain pain isn’t good long term and can make it where you have to skip practice days.
Can’t even begin to explain how much I appreciate that you make these tutorials ♥️

Dodie I love u so much but omg. There is no way in hell I’ll ever be able to play this on the piano. Sounds lovely but I need a diagram or something. Could be that I have absolutely no training tho. Idk. Side note: love the song!!!
I love this video because it shows your creative side, warts and all! This a beautiful song and reminds of The Beatles/McCartney, especially the chorus.
This is a massive help! Such a great song! Admittedly, I had a interesting and very similar experience when I was trying trying to work it out for a piano tutorial.
Honestly every time I watch dodie play instruments live its amazing how intricate her choords are but that also cud be me being a non musician/noob but omg i love her music❤️😩
this is actually perfect with the playing, pacing and super readable chart on the side. ! <3 ill definitely be able to learn how to play this with this video
Thank you Dodie. I always watch your videos or listen to your music if I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Thank you for being lovely! Keep being amazing and yourself xx
Its such a beautiful song, ive always had connections to your somgs but this one seems to have struck my in a special way, thankyou your amazing and i love you
This piece is haunting me from the day of its release, with its Common-Time-set-in-3-3-2 strumming pattern and gripping string section.
Yet had I a thought this feeling might count heavily on the specific ambience and extreme difference in sound between the verse and chorus, there you came by putting it all on the guitar and “marking” it along oh-so-plainly – and proved the unquestionable core it has for what it is, with or without the excellent construction of the official mix.
I know it isn't really Dodie's kind of content anymore but damn, I wish she'd upload like a wardrobe tour or lookbook with all her beautiful dresses. The strawberry dress (or top) is so cuuuute 😭
hey I'm learning theory right now at college and I definitely don't want to shake you, I think you did a pretty great job explaining this beautiful song :) <3
BAP comes out the day i'm done with finals and boy oh boy every time she says __ weeks till then I feel both instantly STRESSED and BLESSED i'm ready for it baby
LOL for me the album comes out the night before my first final, so uh... very sad that i'm going to have to choose between studying for a test that i can't afford to fail (literally and figuratively) and celebrating BAP :,(
Dodie, my love, if the breadcrumb of music theory I still remember is correct, you could've just given us the piano chords as everything the guitar chords are but a whole step down... because that's all the capo does. It just transposes it to make it easier for idiots like me to play. I don't know if it would sound exactly the same but it would be easier at least and it probably wouldn't be so stressful to explain.
not me wanting to play this on the harp 👀 lol this is gonna be hard

Hi dodie, FWIW, couple of small additions to the harmony comments posted by others, the chord at 6:52 is an E9/G#. The chord with B,D,E,A is an E7sus4/B. Bit clunky tho, so all the other suggestions work too. (note if you play it B,E,A,D you get a quartal chord - stacked 4ths). Just noticed you're putting an E in that Gmaj7 as well as the C#, making it technically a Gmaj13(#11), or more accurately a Gmaj6/7(#11) as you're not playing the 9. Just my two penneth...
The strumming pattern in this song is down-down-up-up-down-down-up-up-down-down-up which counts for 1 bar.
Bars are the way a piece of music is divided into, so the line "i KISSED someONE it WASn't YOU" is equivalent to 1 bar with the 4 stresses on the capitalised syllables. A bar in 4ths (basically 1 bar divided into 4 beats) is counted as [1–2–3–4] A bar in divided into 8ths is counted as [1–&–2–&–3–&–4–&] This strumming pattern divides the bars in to 16ths so [1–e–&–a–2–e–&–a–3–e–&–a–4–e–&–a]
The strums are separated into downstrokes and upstrokes that alternate, so 1–e–&–a is down–up–down–up.
The strumming pattern: 1 e & a 2 e & a down – down up – up down –
3 e & a 4 e & a down up – up down – down up
In this strumming pattern, like most others, some of the upstrokes or downstrokes are not played, which creates some variation.
For example, in the first beat, the "e", which should be an upstroke, is not played (represented by a "–") so you skip an upstroke and go straight to the next, which is a downstroke.
Kinda realised just now that the song i wrote this week was probably subconsciously inspired by this song. Its the perpective of the mom friend (alternatively the only gay person at the party aka me) watching all the shit that happens and then bringing their drunk friends home and still being kind of jealous of all those people being careless and living life (mom friend) and making out with random people (gay friend)
I wish I knew about this video before trying to guess all the chords from ear.................... I got there, I guess.... Just took me a bit longer than 8:42 minutes :))
basically the instrumental is so beautiful and innovative and free that you're like "?!@?@#*&#*@%&*" at certain parts in this video trying to explain it so don't beat yourself up about it hehe it means the song is really awesome and original

Dodie followed you from your bedroom ( was that really 5 years ago ) till now told them all knew you would make it much love
No idea if this is helpful but I tried to combine everything dodie said (piano and guitar) and the very helpful comment from Mikael Johansson. I will just end up using whatever I want to make my own little version of the chord progression, but I thought perhaps others would want to do that too. There is just one chord per line with the variations behind it, sometimes the notes dodie played on the piano. So here you go: VERSE B B5 (B,F#,B)
D#7
E
Em
CHORUS
Em (first inversion) Gmaj7 Em7/G (B,D,E,(F#),G)
F#7
Bm (B,D,E,A)
D (A,D,E)
E7 (first inversion) G#dim (G#,B,D,F#)
2nd version Em
F#7
Bm (B,D,F#)
D (A,D,E)
E7 (G#,D,F#,B)
Em (first inversion) Gmaj7 Em7/G (B,(C#),D,E,(F#),G)
Bm
F#)
VARIATION Em/G
F#7
Bm Bm11 omit 9 Bm7 (B,D,E,A)
D Asus (A,D,E)
E7
Oh god it looks chaotic I obviously didn't keep measures in mind AT ALL so it's just top to bottom sorry.
i learned piano for six years when i was younger so i really am not Good lol but i thought u take guitar/uke chords and just... play them on piano? that's what ive always done im confusion i feel v stupid watching this nevertheless it was funny TWO WEEKS TILL BAP
I don’t want to sound creepy at all. I just wanted to let you know that I have a huge crush on you! You’re so pretty my goodness... but also very sweet and talanted and I just can’t. Anyway I hope you see this and it makes your day. And if you ever wanna chat, you would also make my day. ☺️💗

181 likesJust had this playing in the background and not paying lots of attention so sorry if I get this a bit wrong but anyway - 6:24 Bm11 (you play the dominant 7th and the 11th) - at 7:30 it's a Gmaj7#11. The descending line thing some people call a "line cliché" or some people call it a CESH (Contrupuntal Elaboration of a Static Harmony). Sounds great, who cares what it's called.
24 likesReplies (5)
Also 6:30 you could call it D/A (D over A) or D9/A...but given the context of the descending line I'd prob call it Bm11/A coz the point of that sequence is that the bass is descending while the top part of the harmony is static.
4 likeslol when i take notes to myself i always just put desc and i know what that means (descending)
12 likesi'm so bad at knowing what 11ths are they're basically 4ths like 9s are 2nds lol rite
13 likes@doddlevloggle yes they are! And 13ths are 6ths ☺️
2 likes@doddlevloggle yeah exactly. Technically if you say Bm11 your implying that there's a dominant 7th in there too somewhere whereas if you say add4 or something like that you're kind of saying "don't add any other spicy extensions just that exact note". Ha! I'm sure someone will correct me on that with a more accurate definition.
3 likesLove this vid, very relatable frustration with the naming of things
I would love to hear Jacob Collier cover this song! Just imagine his mad, fluid, questioning, floating piano-riffing

5 likesas someone learning how to play baritone uke I would love a uke version of this tutorial!!! although this song fills me with such ennui I probably shouldn't play/sing it too much for the sake of my daily functioning but I want toooooooo
2 likesAHHH I just learned Sick of losing soulmates and now I’m not stopping until I’ve learnt this even if my fingers bleed aaa

Keep it up and welcome to the guitar community it sounds like. Just don’t hurt your fingers to much! Soreness while you build callouses is normal. Pain pain isn’t good long term and can make it where you have to skip practice days.
3 likes@Z G thank you that means a lot! :)
0 likesI can't wait to play this! Can you release a ukulele version please? ❤️
5 likesCan’t even begin to explain how much I appreciate that you make these tutorials ♥️
0 likesDodie I love u so much but omg. There is no way in hell I’ll ever be able to play this on the piano. Sounds lovely but I need a diagram or something. Could be that I have absolutely no training tho. Idk.
5 likesSide note: love the song!!!
This is why I love you dodie. It just shows how naturally relatable and down to earth you are. Never change x
0 likesI love this video because it shows your creative side, warts and all! This a beautiful song and reminds of The Beatles/McCartney, especially the chorus.
1 likeThis is a massive help! Such a great song! Admittedly, I had a interesting and very similar experience when I was trying trying to work it out for a piano tutorial.

0 likesReally really appreciate that you included the tablature!! Thanks!
2 likesI am completely incapable of playing instruments, BUT I still will watch this entire video because I just love you. Your voice makes me feel safe :)
0 likesThis piece is haunting me from the day of its release, with its Common-Time-set-in-3-3-2 strumming pattern and gripping string section.
0 likesYet had I a thought this feeling might count heavily on the specific ambience and extreme difference in sound between the verse and chorus, there you came by putting it all on the guitar and “marking” it along oh-so-plainly – and proved the unquestionable core it has for what it is, with or without the excellent construction of the official mix.
You’re truly wonderful. Plainly put.
Wish I could write music. This is so beautiful 😍💖
0 likesI have no hope of learning this but I will watch anyway because it's so beautiful ❤️
0 likesI know it isn't really Dodie's kind of content anymore but damn, I wish she'd upload like a wardrobe tour or lookbook with all her beautiful dresses. The strawberry dress (or top) is so cuuuute 😭

0 likesI need to get a classical guitar now 🤣
1 likeThe chord progression of the verse is a classic: "Creep". (I - IIImajor - IV - IVm)
1 likeI tired on my uku and it sound very good, I just need to train more cause it's been a while plus these are some wild chords ;p
0 likesYou know, low key, "Secret For The Mad" chords? These could pass for them if you don't want just the one note.
0 likesPlease dodie, tell me where that AMAZING dress (or top) you’re wearing is from! Fabulous!
0 likesi seriously cant understand how you strum so delicately lol i always have such a crisp loud strum
0 likesDodie, my love, if the breadcrumb of music theory I still remember is correct, you could've just given us the piano chords as everything the guitar chords are but a whole step down... because that's all the capo does. It just transposes it to make it easier for idiots like me to play. I don't know if it would sound exactly the same but it would be easier at least and it probably wouldn't be so stressful to explain.
0 likes7:00 let's jump straight to this lil cute moment
21 likeschrist the first chord progression just sets such a perfect mood
0 likesQuestion: how do you mute a string? What tips/tricks does anyone have?
0 likesI badly need that ukulele versionnnn😍😍😍
0 likesJust figured out, that the chord progression in the verse is quite the same as in 'Creep' by Radiohead! 😅

not me wanting to play this on the harp 👀 lol this is gonna be hard
0 likesHi dodie, FWIW, couple of small additions to the harmony comments posted by others, the chord at 6:52 is an E9/G#.
0 likesThe chord with B,D,E,A is an E7sus4/B.
That dress is so pretty! Could you by any chance tell me where it's from?😍

0 likesdodie bless your sweet lil heart but the piano portion of the video was way more funny than educational
0 likesThe strumming pattern in this song is down-down-up-up-down-down-up-up-down-down-up which counts for 1 bar.
12 likesBars are the way a piece of music is divided into, so the line "i KISSED someONE it WASn't YOU" is equivalent to 1 bar with the 4 stresses on the capitalised syllables.
A bar in 4ths (basically 1 bar divided into 4 beats) is counted as [1–2–3–4]
A bar in divided into 8ths is counted as [1–&–2–&–3–&–4–&]
This strumming pattern divides the bars in to 16ths so [1–e–&–a–2–e–&–a–3–e–&–a–4–e–&–a]
The strums are separated into downstrokes and upstrokes that alternate, so 1–e–&–a is down–up–down–up.
The strumming pattern:
1 e & a 2 e & a
down – down up – up down –
3 e & a 4 e & a
down up – up down – down up
In this strumming pattern, like most others, some of the upstrokes or downstrokes are not played, which creates some variation.
For example, in the first beat, the "e", which should be an upstroke, is not played (represented by a "–") so you skip an upstroke and go straight to the next, which is a downstroke.
Hope this makes sense :)

0 likesKinda realised just now that the song i wrote this week was probably subconsciously inspired by this song. Its the perpective of the mom friend (alternatively the only gay person at the party aka me) watching all the shit that happens and then bringing their drunk friends home and still being kind of jealous of all those people being careless and living life (mom friend) and making out with random people (gay friend)
