Back in 2013, so many people were annoyed with Flash Sentry and his "relationship" with Twilight. But here Sunburst is accomplishing more than Flash ever could. It must be that rocking wizard goatee; there's too much soul in that soul patch.
@Bon Bon I genuinely feel bad for Flash. He basically had everything going against him, even though his character isn't even that offensive.
I think what didn't help is it was the height of the initial fandom, we knew about EG and how it was essentially just another shallow toy selling scheme from Hasbro that DHX did the best they could with, it was the series first movie, but not the one people wanted, so a lot of people latched onto whatever they could in order to hate it, and Flash being a brand new character tied to EQ first made him an easy target. IIRC Flash was revealed ahead of time, but not named, so the fandom gave him the derisive moniker "Brad", with people already building up ideas of who he was, or what he represented, to the point where I doubt Flash could have ever been good enough regardless of what was done with him. Also the fact that he couldn't be the focus of the film as not to take away too much attention from the main female characters, but still adding a "characters from different worlds romance" subplot that Hasbro probably wanted. This was also at the stage where the series was experimenting with prominent male characters, and hadn't worked out how to add too many without distracting too much from the female ones.
It also looks like any potential future plans with Flash were largely dropped after the response was apparently negative enough among the older fans, and possibly a lack of interest among the intended audience (I obviously don't have numbers, but I feel like if his toys were flying off shelves, we'd have seen more of him). EG2 having him being manipulated by evil mind control and acting like a jerk probably just added to the hatred towards his character, and affirmed the negative feelings many had about him. I've seen people outright suggest that that was somehow a true reflection of his personality (justifying their hate of him), and not him acting under mind control as the film clearly shows.
Sunburst benefits from everything the writers learned about what people hated about Flash; Sunburst is primarily an Equestia character first and foremost, he's built up to gradually, he has an established past with one of the secondary characters (who was already slightly controversial, since she wasn't the main character like Twilight), his entire introduction gets spread out instead of being a side plot in a controversial film, he isn't presented as the designated love interest for a character a lot of older fans have a ton of investment in (whether romantic or brotherly), and thus are very protective of, and therefore extremely judgemental about who Twilight should "end up with" or if she should have a romantic interest at all.
All in all I feel bad for Flash's character. He never really stood a chance.
I think the problem with Flash was that there's absolutely no reason for them to be interested in each other, other than him being just a stereotypical Chad, and Twiggie's hormones going haywire. They don't have much in common, and all their interactions were pretty awkward and lame. But with Sunburst, it's very different. As he said it himself, he does have much more in common with Twilight than with anypony else in Equestria. They're both magicians, they're intelligent, they're interested in books and ancient knowledge & artefacts, they're a bit dorky, but in an adorable way. And they seem to have a pretty good chemistry right from the start. I mean, who else can make Twilight laugh so adorably? :J They're like made for each other.
Sunburst: goes to see Starlight, sees everybody else instead Uh, Sunburst, that's not how cheating works. It's supposed to be behind her back, not during your date.
Reminds me that one time in school when I went with one girl to the school dance party and danced with everyone but her :q Yeah, it might have been a dick move, but... that was the only way to make her less interested in me (she was interested too much) :q Also I did that unintentionally, it just happened that I naturally preferred to spend more time with other people and totally forgot about her :q So I'm kinda with Sunburst on this one – he did that unintentionally too, and Starlight was too much obsessed about them spending time together, to the point that she unintentionally started to sabotage it herself by getting upset that it doesn't go as she planned.
Sunburst stealing all the girls true, but he won't be alive or well if he hits on Fluttershy or tries anything funny with Fluttershy I am convinced at this point. Discord would end him forever.
04:38 Well, that would at least work. They're both intelligent, they love books and ancient stuff, they're both magicians... ;> And he's not Flash :J 05:03 Tell him about the kites, Starlight ;> 05:15 TARDIS technology in use :> 06:26 :D 07:42 Hormones... :J 09:50 Yeah, he basically friendzoned her already if he is too shy to change clothes in her vicinity. That way they'll never gonna fsck :q 10:05 Is this one of those places where they redacted "cider" as "apple juice"? :J 11:41 If I could do magic like that, I wouldn't have to struggle so much with chemical analysis. 11:55 Waifu stealing done right :) Or how to be a chick magnet being a weaboo ;) 12:22 THEN PLAY "BANNED FROM EQUESTRIA" ALREADY!!! :q (1000 subscribers special maybe?) 12:54 Yeah, I wonder how did she know where it is, considering that she wasn't there with the mane six when they covered it. And I thought they sealed the entrance with a boulder so that no pony went there anymore and made some more trouble :q 13:05 "I guess, but I'm a rebel so that's kinda what I do..." :D 14:12 Well... the more stuff you know about, the more people you can talk with :J 19:32 Boulder cloned himself! :o 21:20 Back from out trip to Neighagara Falls :J 22:06 :> 22:34 Nope, not at all ;> 22:45 :D Look at the symbols on its cover ;> They're the hint. 23:13 The Royal Baby of Doom :> And Changelings ;)
* 9:50 Ok imo he'd basically already friendzone her if he WASN'T shy about his clothes around her, since she'd be such a friend that that wouldn't matter to him. 😂😂 Haha it depends I guess
10:17 "Dude, Starlight can buck apples!" Remember that montage of her doing things with each of the mane six during that season-ending song? I think Glimmy picked up some of their skills.
I never quite forgave Sunburst for this episode. He knows perfectly well that Starlight had abandonment issues after he left for Celestia's school, he comes into town to hang out with her, and then he barely spends any time with her and starts to gush about her friends. What the hay?
Anyway, this episode is why I ship him with Moondancer. When Starlight is ignored, she tries to hide it and wonders if there's something wrong with her. When Moondancer is ignored, she gets mad enough to threaten a princess with a bat. That should make it much easier for him to see when he's not paying his SO enough attention. ;)
People tend to forget that Sunburst was just as poorly socially developed as Starlight is but where Starlight goes overboard with big gestures Sunburst gets wrapped up in what he's doing and loses perspective on everything else.
It's literally the whole reason they lost touch in the first place.
2:10 - "antiquing"...is that not the douchiest, hipster-sounding term you've ever heard? And merely the fact that that word didn't get underlined in red means it's officially a word in the OED. FML lol.
@@htk789 Also people not being to understand Starlight in this episode are bunch of hypocrites. Starlight is like Chloe from Life is Strange. Suffered because a scumbag left her without answer. Same thing Max did to Chloe and these disgusting Life is Strange fans takes Max side.
It's almost as if Starlight unconsciously found friends that are fragments of Sunburst--
