I am a person who was not born on the early 2000s but I had a Windows xp computer, it was the first computer I have ever owned and seen. It was a family computer and I loved it, everything was seamless printer, games, PowerPoint, documents literally everything. Looking at this video gave me a sense of nostalgia. you, Michael MJD and tech tangents are the best. thank you guys, for the archives and sacrifices y'all made for these videos. Love it

This is a trip down memory lane. I clearly remember the older Windows 2000 machine i had at the time had gone kaput (this was back in 2006). The build was replaced with was a Windows XP one. It too had a Pentium 4, but no graphics card and 512 mb RAM (later upgraded to 1 or 2 gigs iirc). That machine and Windows XP made me the tech-enthusisast i am now.
Also some of the parts from this period last really long if well taken care of. The newer ones seem to be more fragile, ironically.

xp will always be special for millions of users, that was such a trip down memory lane! thank you

YouTube algorithm sent me here, and I'm glad it did. I didn't get XP right away, and stuck with 98 till I upgraded in 2003. At that time I was rocking an AMD Athlon 64, and and Nvidia FX 5500, all with a massive 2GB RAM haha, as my XP machine.

so much nostalgia... still have a working pc with similar components although it wasnt turned on in quite some time... i remember it had pentium 4 2.6 ghz, radeon 9550 and 2gb of ram. i remember playing crysis on it. actually ran pretty nice (on lowest settings of course) and i was pretty happy with it considering crysis can melt even some of the modern pc's

My health teacher still uses ViewSonic as a projector. Some of my teachers still use Windows 7 or Vista. I once had an art teacher with a Windows XP, but it was never used as far as I knew.

The Radeon 9550 is a little slow for newer games like Half Life 2, the Radeon 9600 Pro had more juice and came as a 256MB version as well.

I recommend a Sound Blaster for proper audio in DOS games, any cheap card will do because they are all able to emulate a SB16.

Consider using a PATA (IDE) SSD, it might be not immersive but it will be much faster and more reliable than those HDDs.

Brought XP Pro on Release day and used it in all my builds until I got sick of upgrading a box and went to a Laptop with Windows 7 in 2010. Very fond memories of both XP and 7. Thanks for a great video mate.

My desktop has an extremely similar case to the one used! It’s actually a pretty nice case. mines a bit different cause mine is a lot more flat on the front and has less io, and the fan grill on the side is smaller, but still same vibe

Since June 2019 I use the same type of PC for ~1 hour/week as backup server: It is build from the remains of a 2003 HP D530 SFF. It has a Pentium 4 HT (1C2T; 3.0GHz); 2GB DDR (400MHz) and 4 left-over HDDs in total 1.21TB (2x IDE 3.5" and 2x SATA-1 2.5"). The case is a Compaq Evo Tower with a Win 98SE activation sticker; a 3.5" Floppy Drive; a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM, but those are not connected. The xTech power-supply (600W; DOP800=$16) is new with the following plugs; 24-pin; 4-pin; 2x SATA and 2x Molex.

It runs FreeBSD 13.0 on OpenZFS 2.0. It is connected by the external world by a Power and Ethernet cable and it is controlled from my desktop by XRDP (The X-version of Windows Remote Desktop Protocol) and the transfer of the incremental backup is based on OpenZFS "send | ssh receive". The transfer reaches 200 Mbps of 1Gbps due to a ~95% load on one CPU thread. The system ages ~1 week in a year (~52 hours/year) , so it should last a long time :)

By the way I also use Windows XP Home a couple of times/week to play the wma copies of my LPs/CDs with WoW and TrueBass effects. That Windows XP is installed and activated in a Virtualbox VM on March 2010 and it survived 3 desktops and 4 CPUs :) :)

We had a WinXP desktop sitting just below the stairs. Cousins older than me used to use it quite often (most likely for research and printing) before the younger ones like us could touch it. Was probably bought around 2003 or something, I don't know. Man, the memories I had just browsing through Encarta and thoroughly enjoying the instruments section thing (you can click on them and sound clips of the instruments will play iirc), playing probably a pirated PC port of Super Mario Bros (that you need to close via keyboard shortcuts because that thing's in full screen and won't even budge) and playing an obsolete Winnie the Pooh coloring game for hours just rush back whenever I stumble across WinXP related stuff. That computer was given away to the neighbors quite some time ago, but as of late it isn't working anymore. Thank you for the nostalgia Enderman, truly made my day.

I built my first computer back in 2005, I still have most of the parts but the motherboard died years ago. I still remember and will always remember the Windows XP boot screen appearing in my display, it was the most exciting thing ever.

I made a similar PC in 2003, with a 3GHz P4, 1GB RAM and Radeon 9800 Pro, with a Maxtor 120GB drive. It basically blew up when I first turned it on.

I was 1 year old when xp came out and at 7 I was playing games on it. Will always cherish XP, and this seems like such a cool idea for regular people to do.
Thinking about it now, I probably still have a pentium 4 somewhere

Windows XP was the most effiecient and graphically appealing, even more than todays Windows version. Cant imagine how they were able put that all in one CD whereas these days latest Windows is so large that they come in DVDs yet stand no where in visual appeal and ease of use.

XP will always be the best OS to me used it from the early 2000s until late 2017 which in my high school still used hopeing some day I can find a windows XP desktop again

My last XP build was as late as 2012 and it was insanely overkill for Windows XP. GeForce 380, 8 GB of RAM and core i5. when support ended it hurted to upgrade, as I wanted to keep everything I upgraded to vista and then 7 before a cursed power surge took my PC's life a month ago, ALL of the components except for the PSU and GPU and expansion cards were destroyed (drives included)

Great video and build! I've been really itching to build a 2000/XP machine for a long time myself, and Socket 478 Pentium 4 HT and an AGP video card has been the basis for what I want to do myself, even though Socket 775 Core-series boards with PCI Express video cards are a lot easier to find.

I have 3 of those wifi cards in older machines I had to get a custom driver It works fine under Win 2k to 7. I still have the driver but don't remember were I got it. It was 12 years ago. It also works fine under all the linux distros I tried.

How was the IT world outside the US in the 90s: I wish I could have smelled a new computer... But here in Brazil in the 90s things took a long time to happen, we in the interior of the country used computers 486, 586 and AMD Duron around 1999, when other wealthy people in capital cities no longer wanted these computers. I only had the pleasure of having a new computer around the year 2004, in this case a Pentium notebook with Linux, 1 gigabyte of memory. Other than that, my dad had bought a new computer but with a used monitor about 3 years earlier. Today I have a CORE i5 from the 11th GTX 1650

Some thing I use on my retro machines as I have a ton of them. Even my very oldest ones is I bought a wireless repeater that has RJ-45 on it and that solves my problem just going wired for everything using my repeater or rather range extender.

I immediately recognized the WD800 and the Pentium from various workstation computers

I still have my Dell Optiplex GX280 SFF running all original parts and windows XP Pro that I use to this day with some home design software and office 2003 for reports. Not connected to the web but still my daily workhorse.

My first PC in 2005 had a Pentium 4 + 512mb of Ram + FX5200. It was the fastest PC in my school for some good years, at that time, most people didnt have a PC or one that run games, most of them were playing in PS1 and PS2. PS3 didnt come popular here until 2011+.

That old Ultra Case was nice. I have one that I got lucky and found one at a Good Will in my area in its box for only $10 and it looks similar to the Antec SB 1040 case but with just one less 5.25 drive bay. Great video and Great Build. Have a good one.

Hello! About the network connection problem. The security standards have changed. I had the exact same problem with an Acer laptop (ten years old). Its network card could not connect to the router. I tried everything possible and got nothing. The only thing that worked was to make a guest network from the router and connect to it without a password. What is even more interesting is that an even older sony vaio laptop connects to the router without any issues. Some old wireless network cards seem to not be compatible with the newer standards.

reminded of my second pc that was an xp system with the exact same monitor you have on this one (silver color), and how i would always cry about the computer being slow or laggy. Good times.

I had several PCs since 2003 until now:

1. DT Compaq with 128 MB RAM, Pentium III 550 MHz CPU , 6 GB HDD, with added additional 40 GB - used Windows XP, initially being with Windows 98;
2. HP Compaq small form Factor (SFF) with 256 MB RAM (then upgraded to 768 MB) Pentium 4 1.8 GHz CPU, NVIDIA GForce 440 64 MB GPU and 40 GB HDD, Windows XP only;
3. Home Made PC with 1 GB RAM, Pentium 4 HT CPU (maybe has the same CPU used in the PC shown here), 80 GB HDD, Windows XP again, but it very quickly started CPU overheat throttling and other troubles so I very shortly got rid of it;
4. Dell Optiplex 745 with 4 GB RAM, Pentium D 925 3.00 GHz, AMD Radeon HD5670 512 MB GPU, 2 x 80 GB HDDs, was running Windows XP, then was running Windows 7;
5. Dell Precision 3400 with 8 GB RAM ECC, Core 2 Quad 9450 CPU, NVidia GT 730 2 GB GPU, 2 x 80 GB + 1 x 160 GB HDDs, it was running Windows 7;
6. HP EliteDesk with 8 GB RAM, AMD Pro A10-8750B 3.6 GHz CPU + AMD Radeon integrated Graphics, 500 GB HDD running Windows 10 Pro - it is current PC I'm using.
However my last PC is notoriously slow - the HDD constantly writes something in background often making the entire PC slow. I seriously think do replace it - I'm not happy with it (unlike with previous PCs second hand I had purchased).

My dad sold our window xp pc back in 2010 and I'm really sad that he sold it but he did kept the original playstation tho

We had it installed days before 24 Sep 01. Whistler was on the scene and its VLK was final, you can try having a look for "devils own" XP.
We had it a month or so before XP went RTM.

Getting all the drivers running correctly in win 10 can also be a pain in the ass... you need to find them online according to the peripheral ID and stuff, because there are almost always some drivers that win 10 won’t find and thus won’t automatically install.

CRT technology was mature and produce much better image than lcd back then, this computer will be more nostalgic and better if you are using CRT monitor

I remember using a similar model of motherboard for my server that i build for my microsoft lab, for when i studied windows XP and windows 2003 server. Funny thing was i binned the server system about 5 years ago, All its drives were dead off the PSU killing them. One thing about the P4 it was one hot system, My daily P4 was nightmare for heat, and the lab server, even though it was just sitting doing bot all. That thing still got hot too, which put me off the P4. I do miss windows XP, but not the P4 era. But then again we started to say good bye to the floppy drive and hello to sata.

Windows xp was the best i dont feel like im using a pc unless its windows xp. i dont understand why they did away with it it was extremely user friendly and perfectly organized it was the best method to learn a computer.

Ah the memories lol. Loved windows xp, it's just a great os. Also I always used Asrock motherboards when building PC's although I always had AMD CPU's.

I used Windows XP on my main working machine for literally 20 years since my first PC in 2001, and just updated to Windows 10 a month ago. Also used Office 2003 until last month. One of the first things I did was to set up an XP VM on VirtualBox, so Windows XP is still only a click away!

I thought Vista was a gimmick when it came out (except the Flip 3D feature was cool), and all the school & enterprise PCs still ran XP through at least 2012. Then there was Windows 7 and I was like, yeah Windows is Windows, XP still works, it's fine. Then 8 came out and I was like "what is this craziness?!" Then Web browsing became too slow on a single-core CPU. Guess it's time to upgrade to the latest OS. Don't get me started on 11. Please.

Great job on building the PC. It was just amazing seeing it all put together from scratch. Also Windows 7 is another great version Microsoft released.

A! the good old windows xp!

Activate old win versions by sending a fax from the pc, then recieve the page as a fax. When failed, try again. If done, the pc will be much more stable. Nokia hscsd speeds up the net access after 2 h of net and regular retries. 2 kb/ s is not slow, it uses a trick to be fast net connection. Gprs does not contain this fix.

I have the same Microsoft keyboard, was using it untill 2020. I got new PC which does not support PS2 and I still have my original copy of Windows XP from 2001 no SP2 the box is nearly the same as one you have.

I built a "new" 98 box recently, with some new parts, others I refurbished. Could never afford all new old stock though lol.

I also had trouble getting a connection after reinstalling XP on a laptop, and what I found worked was to install the community made service pack 4. Think it has some added compatibility on top of other custom bug fixes.

Me: oh win 7 support ended up, i must swich it to something else, i think i will install xp back lol.

And i still use it, speed is awesome, browser and programs open in less the second, system fully loads in only 15-20 seconds. Security is not a problem because of updates (i also installed XPupdatePack) and my antivirus works pretty good, games are also availible, right now im playing half life 2, finished ep0 and ep1. XP is best.

the issue with your wifi wasn't a driver issue, it was a configuration issue, likely your router is configured to use a modern security protocol that your wifi card wasn't compatible with, and therefor was unable to connect, which is why your phone hotspot without a password DID work, because there the security didn't matter as there wasn't any

as for the "THIS DRIVER IS NOT SIGNED" error, you can honestly just ignore that, i have hardware that i know with absolute certainty is for XP, and was from a big brand with what should be signed drivers, but windows xp would still give that error, microsoft most likely broke something at some point at XP's EOL that causes it to not detect the signature correctly

i have an old compaq laptop with the same era of wifi (although the chip in mine is by atheros instead of linksys) and while it's old like the linksys, it DOES support the modern security standards, and was able to connect just fine even within XP

I love that time period of gaming bf1942 cnc generals they were by far one of the best games that I played and still play today together with half life 2 and so many other titles.

When I saw your build I noticed something with the PSU the fan that pulling in air is longer free.
Because you just put it in the top part of the case it literally doesn't have any breathing room. I think you might have to turn the psu around despite the wires actually not looking good then.

A 2001 PSU is usually fine. I don’t understand why you are all scared about messing a bit with PSUs... I do that all the time, open them, repair them, and as you can see from the comment, I am not dead. Oh, and nothing even blew up!

What I wouldn’t have got original for the build was the drive however, even for Windows XP... I would have got an SSD. Maybe one from the Windows XP years still sealed if I was a billionaire!

We didn't have 5x4 monitors in the US although they were manufactured maybe to businesses. However, nobody had those, we all had 4x3 for a long time. We went from 4x3 to 16x9. Pentium III was a better processor than those Pentium 4's. Look up that stuff.

If your wifi supports the Xbox compatibility b/g check box turn it on and wifi should work.

That plates just go easily out by just putting a flat screw driver in the cross and by going up & down until the metal gives up

On the wifi adapter, sometimes a 5ghz connection won't work even if the adapter can pick it up since XP was released years before networks even considered using 5ghz? Not sure on this but it's a possibility

If you want it to be authentic, you need the tan/white case, not black. Computers were not black back then. Oh yeah, most people didn't have Wi Fi either, we either had ethernet IF we were lucky (most didn't have that kind of speed), but most were still using dialup 56K modem. Lastly, we didn't really had web cams then. The things you put in this build were things Rich/Well to do people had. Most people didn't have all those luxuries. Definitely not a nice keyboard and mouse either. This is a nice build but one for the bougie people in that era! :) By the way, do you know "Zack the Russian" or talk to him? He's a cool guy based here in the US. Best to you.

You know you never mount the motherboard before mounting the processor, right? Specially when you aren't even grounded.
No front panel cable connections? On these old builds you actually put those before putting the motherboard in because most of the time trying to connect them after is a major pain.

my all in one that has 5ghz ac/n has the same problems with older stuff even if i set the security to compatibility mode for the 2.4ghz

What I would like to see is someone build the ULTIMATE WinXP machine.

You know, use the highest CPU that XP can use, like the i7-4960X. Since it uses DDR3, you could use 4x1GB sticks on it (for 32-bit, 4x8GB - 32GB for x64). Add the fastest SSD you can find. Throw in a GTX 980Ti (which is the highest adaptable to XP) and run that. Then see if you can wet yer britches.

Nice build! Just a suggestion, I would actually recommend trying an ethernet-based wifi adapter for old systems like this. These adapters have modern security standards (this is why your internal card failed BTW.) they are plug&play and work with anything with ethernet support.

pleas i love the build but i don't have the time and money to build one so i got an old dell oplx 380 sff for $25 bucks it came with 2 gig of ram a 2core 775 e 7800 cpu but no hdd so all i did was add the 500gb hdd and i had a dell xp sp3 install disk and i was good to go. for all my old games like combat flight simulator i have 1,2,and 3 i found that the q9550 4 core will work in the machine and added a dell amd 4 gb low profile video card to finish off the system it now is great simple and very low cost just ram, cpu, and video card hdd less then $90 bucks
