Important caveat: Safari and other mobile web browsers (not sure on exactly which ones but Safari on iPhone for sure) scrub EXIF data when uploading through a browser. So for iPhone users, this was definitely through their app.
Also important: Rebekah Mercer, funder of Cambridge Analytica, was a big funder of Parler, so it’s no surprise the site wound up being a huge datamining scheme. This time, though, they built their own honeypot and turned it on themselves.
Normally they would strip it before posting. In this case you have a second rate social media site populated by the absolute least intelligent section of people in the country. What do you expect?
Feds have ALL the meta on Parler for locations of the Insurrectionists: in congress, military, police, ICE, MAGA, etc, & Trump & his relatives & minions. There is no escape. Justice & Jail is coming to all.
29 what you mean by the researcher were able to extract the metadata *"and the original p unproccesd raw data"* ? As far as I know social media remove the metadata or at least doesn't share it since it encode it with other format .
did the researcher obtain it from a social media? which website? If the exif metadata doesn't include a gps location how did he retrieve it ?
that particular site did not appear to strip the metadata from the uploaded content. it is not like that on other sites. but, as a user you shouldn’t rely on any site to strip the metadata out for you. they may keep the original somewhere.
I sent a screenshot to a frined from my phone to his via Bluetooth and before sending the file, it asked my if i want to delete the metadata. I think most of the new xiaomi phones have this feature
It wasn't hacked, it was just designed so that every bit of data was publicly available and anyone could have archived it. They didn't delete videos and photos when the user asked them to for instance, and just broke the link to it while keeping it up and available to anyone. So no hack, just a comprehensive legal download.
@Benjamin Cook also known as a Scrape. Their security protocols were a joke. Now all user data (post, vids, pics, drivers licenses, emails, deleted items, even gps locations of pics) will be all over the stupid internet. 🤦♂️🤬😱💩
@Temüjin Khan What information are you talking about confirming? The whole point of Parler was to allow people to express whatever ideas they wanted. To group all of these ideas into one single idea that you don't even mention in your comment and then claim that the OP hates someone(who he didn't even mention in HIS comment) for disagreeing with a belief that you refuse to tell me is idiotic.
@Liam McGregor I also think there is a very important issue being forgotten. "Deradicalization", no matter what opinions you believe. If you remove integration, from the research I have looked at, isolation is the worst thing you can do. It may not be comfortable, but being able to confront ideas/interact with them. Has been regarded as the most effective way to combat the issue.
