Windows XP with the level of graphics Windows 1.01 could do at the most. Oh my. It would be interesting to do a graphics comparison between the two in the same emulator.
Well, there's only one step farther back we can go. CGA. Good old Magenta, Cyan, White, and Black. Or Red, Yellow, White, and Black if you're using the alternate pallete.
Which mode? CGA has a couple of different standard palettes and a couple of non-standard palettes. Black-Red-Yellow-Green and Black-Cyan-Magenta-White are most common while Black-Red-Blue-White and Red-Yellow-Green-Blue (seen in Life and Death and Jill of the Jungle respectively) are less common.
@@easybee0 commodore vic-20 only had text mode and 6 redefinable text characters, that has a 6502 in it, which is 100% incompatible with the pentium 1 (minimum cpu for windows xp)
@@Meltinglce those aren't the correct hex codes, the correct ones for cga's 320x200 4-color mode are #000000, #55ffff, #ff55ff, and #ffffff, there were versions of windows that have cga support (windows 1.0 1985 to windows 3.0 1990) and those use 2-color 640x200 mode
Trying it with CGA in 86Box, it just shows a black screen when booting into the GUI. I don't think it is possible to load a driver for CGA without errors. Maybe trying it with the Composite mode of CGA would work a bit better?
Yeah an Amiga with OCS graphics (released in 1985) would have done better with its copper ability, more colours and 32 colours on screen as well as half bright modes making it look like it had more colours. Wouldn't have been very fast tho!

Its possible to run Windows 8 or 10 with EGA? It could be fun see the minimalistic dessign with such limitation in colors xd (sad that 4bit mode got discontinuated after win7) Edit: im wrong, after Vista it does depend in the videocard that you are using, so, technically you can still do EGA or even CGA in Windows 10, the question its if it even runs on such graphics card, i think there's no problem if its emulated lol

I had an EGA problem when I downloaded Midtown Madness and I had errors with the Game running, so I put it in windows 98 compatibility mode, then the game showed up like that. Managed to fix it, but still crazy.
The color palette is seriously messed up. When you take in consideration that by default the window title bar should be blue, and it displays red, the colors are seriously off...
I don't think that's actually possible or what it would actually look like. I'm pretty sure an EGA card doesn't have enough vram to hold the screen windows xp wants to display and also windows xp likely wants to use way more colours than it displays and I doubt it has a built in method for dealing with that
Actually in today we have like so many colors! But in ega we only had 16 colors because it was of its color compatibility meaning they only supported that many colors (16) compared to what we have today (Like 1,000,000,000)
Actually Windows 10 should support this :) we are going backwards regarding colors, and design. all icons are flat and mostly monotone. the fancy 3d esque shadows and effects are all gone. if anything, we are back with the number of colors as if we were running it on an EGA card :)
It wont work, it will use the cpu instead, and it will be so fucking slow. Not even vga works. Just does the same, tho windows 7 should work. Also sorry for late answer
This would look much better if xp was using the ega adapter properly. From the looks of things xp is using its vga driver so all the colors are wrong and its also missing the bottom part of the screen. This would look much better if you actually found a proper ega driver and installed it, then all the colors would be correct and it would work at 640x350.
@@SOTP. XP is running in 16 colors but its using the vga driver. ega uses a different palette so all the colors are wrong. Its also running at the wrong res since ega is 640x350, so the extra lines are just cuttoff. If you actually used an eqa driver, then the colors would be correct, and the screen size would be properly sized to 640x350. There are no ega drivers for XP that I am aware of, but it would not be difficult to write one.
Hmm, didn't see the taskbar. I've seen versions of Windows running on EGA, they still display the taskbar snapped to the bottom of the framebuffer. Something isn't right here.

86box and pcem is the same emulators, this emulators can emulate a real machine, you can do everything with it, but pcem v14 is up to date now and also supporting more features for emulating better...
Actually, I was asking since this video definitely shows it happening through emulation (which I don’t doubt at all), though that allows for highly improbable combinations of physical hardware required to run both an EGA card and yet still fulfill the remaining requirements to run XP. I’d just be more impressed if it can be done with the proper physical hardware, which is what I was hoping to see.
It’s akin to setting up, say, a 386 emulator with 512 MB of RAM. Sure the 386 theoretically addresses up to 4 GB, but good luck acquiring a real motherboard that supports both a 386 chip and even half that much RAM in the physical world.
In the end, I’m left with the following: 1. Can XP theoretically run on EGA? Yes, if the emulation is proper. 2. Does such a physical box exist that has ever run XP through an EGA card on an EGA monitor? Inconclusive.

Actually Windows 10 should support this :) we are going backwards regarding colors, and design. all icons are flat and mostly monotone. the fancy 3d esque shadows and effects are all gone. if anything, we are back with the number of colors as if we were running it on an EGA card :)

1 likeThis would look much better if xp was using the ega adapter properly. From the looks of things xp is using its vga driver so all the colors are wrong and its also missing the bottom part of the screen. This would look much better if you actually found a proper ega driver and installed it, then all the colors would be correct and it would work at 640x350.

@@SOTP. XP is running in 16 colors but its using the vga driver. ega uses a different palette so all the colors are wrong. Its also running at the wrong res since ega is 640x350, so the extra lines are just cuttoff. If you actually used an eqa driver, then the colors would be correct, and the screen size would be properly sized to 640x350. There are no ega drivers for XP that I am aware of, but it would not be difficult to write one.

You would need a CGA Card with 64k VRAM, which only a few cards support. Most have only 16k.

Actually, I was asking since this video definitely shows it happening through emulation (which I don’t doubt at all), though that allows for highly improbable combinations of physical hardware required to run both an EGA card and yet still fulfill the remaining requirements to run XP. I’d just be more impressed if it can be done with the proper physical hardware, which is what I was hoping to see.
0 likesIt’s akin to setting up, say, a 386 emulator with 512 MB of RAM. Sure the 386 theoretically addresses up to 4 GB, but good luck acquiring a real motherboard that supports both a 386 chip and even half that much RAM in the physical world.
In the end, I’m left with the following:
1. Can XP theoretically run on EGA? Yes, if the emulation is proper.
2. Does such a physical box exist that has ever run XP through an EGA card on an EGA monitor? Inconclusive.
