Very nostalgic, I remember these XP "clones" were popular in Egypt, It boomed during 2003 to 2007, most people I knew were having low-end machines including me because we were too poor to buy a good one, there were people who sell CDs containing these windowses, with different themes and stuff, back in the days when resolution were 1024x768 and some higher depending on the CRT monitor. Since the internet was dial up at the time It comes with a lot of bloat, Yahoo messenger and some avira anti virus and some pirated games, usually GTA Vice City,
This comment actually made me understand why a lot of these awful-looking Windows mods exists. On one hand the creators probably would get in more trouble if they were to use stock Windows assets, so they probably had to use themes that don't look good. The bloatware part is very understandable too considering you mentioned dial-up as well. While these mods can seem very narcissistic (creator's name and personal photos plastered just about everywhere in the UI) I assume it was somewhat important for the less fortunate people while making bank for those who can make Windows mods for these people.
I remember using a Windows XP Clone called Gold XP here in Pakistan in 2007 which was modified by Saleh Kakar (a software engineering student), and it became so popular with customized default fonts and icons and manipulated registries with a stock boot logo and some added software like media player, firefox, antivirus and games came pre-installed, that users thought of it as an official Microsoft release of new build of Windows XP. It wasn't horrible at all though and yeah, It was damn successful having been sold millions of copies in the country.

You can't imagine the nostalgia I got as an Egyptian 😂 When I was a kid my dad went to a computer repair store and installed one of these weird clones. It was a XP installation and I remember that fake Aero effect and the weird app thingy that was on the top. I even fixed my teacher's PC one day and he had a weird XP clone also themed with pirates for some reason 😂😂 Btw for clarification: I have no fucking idea why it happens but I see PC repair shops in Egypt always install weird unnecessary programs like WinRAR, 7zip, VLC, MPC, Winamp, Realplayer everythig they have on their flash drive will install it. XP version came as 'The Devil's own' version, when XP was released. There is still a photo of it before the Microsoft building. The devil's own became the most used version of XP worldwide.
My school used to run one of these. It was something like Windows Mafia edition or something, a modified WinXP with fake aero, custom black/red taskbar, and weird login / boot screen. The PCs were struggling to run that thing.

I've seen the 9x theme thing on a lot of school laptops, but in this case it makes sense because those laptops can't even run Aero thanks to the abomination that is the Intel GMA 3600.
As for you being wrongly accused of "pirating the computers" (tf is that even supposed to mean), all I can say is that it's something that has happened to me before but I was able to get away with it because in the end there was no proof, plus everything here is pirated so who cares at all.

the computers from the engineering labs have the vista bootscreen, so I hoped they were vista PCs, but somehow they ran W7. I've never seen Vista school pcs, both a good thing (I've never seen Vista fall that low, polluted with school-bloat),and a bad thing (I'd love to use vista at school though).
The W10 PC have often had the litteral start menu blocked (!) (this is why you don't block the freaking universal platform - half of the OS depends on it now it's not just some toy UI anymore). I still don't get why they block so much stuff when they could just give students normal user accounts and have a perfectly good level of security.
My poor german teacher, who was not good with computers before COVID, has been given by the school the worst computers: one that kept BSODing as it was slowly commiting autodestruction, one without an OS and/or without a hard drive...
i'm still not sure why in middle school they set all PCs to the "windows classic" theme, but someone sparked a rumor that it was my fault because I had "pirated and reinstalled windows 95" (it was 2014) and I was bullied for it.
They left a "uninstall iACA" link in the start menu (iACA is the school-spyware they used to control us). One time I clicked it, and somehow it worked. I almost faced really bad repercussions because I had "pirated the computers". (the whole school thought I was somehow a hacker even though I had no skills then, I just could really use microsoft office)
every school PC ever has both winrar and 7-zip, vlc and mpc-hc, libreoffice and openoffice (the latter should especially not be here), chrome and firefox, two pdf readers, cdburnerxp, two pdf creators etc... idk why they think we need two of everything. and that's all on windows 10 (note that most inbox windows 10 software tends to be blocked for even more opaque reasons). what's worse, they all put themselves on the DESKTOP like unpolite dirty apps! (an horrifying lot still puts itself on the QAT folder even though the QAT has been dead for ages and microsoft has been shunning apps that did that since the beginning. and then schools block editing the desktop so we have to bear them all.

Windows bootleggers really are just money-grabbers without any interest or even care for their work. They just throw random baloney in their software and force people to accept it when buying a new computer for next to nothing.
Meanwhile, in Linux, the basic install of any distro is usually very light, but can be customised by changing wallpapers, themes, adding new software (which is often very light compared to the average Windows bloatware) and even plug-ins in some cases. When a Linux install can be even cheaper (FREE) than this kind of baloney AND is far more secure due to technical measures being updated almost constantly (literally thousands of people look at the source code of the Linux distros and applications to remove any bug or vulnerability they can find! So why are there still Windows bootlegs!?

It is not clones. MS-DOS is clone of CP/M, Linux is clone of UNIX, ReactOS is clone of Windows NT. All they work like originals, but they rewritten from zero. (Before someone asks why I do it: I use MPC-HC only to play .mkv files, and VLC for all the other file formats WMP can't play. Yes I know VLC can play .mkv files as well, but for some reason they look really glitchy when I do that, yet they play perfectly on MPC-HC. Then WinRar is for small files, and 7-Zip is for larger files, or for when I need to use Locale Emulator, since I also have the 32 bit version)

This comment actually made me understand why a lot of these awful-looking Windows mods exists. On one hand the creators probably would get in more trouble if they were to use stock Windows assets, so they probably had to use themes that don't look good. The bloatware part is very understandable too considering you mentioned dial-up as well. While these mods can seem very narcissistic (creator's name and personal photos plastered just about everywhere in the UI) I assume it was somewhat important for the less fortunate people while making bank for those who can make Windows mods for these people.

31 likesI remember using a Windows XP Clone called Gold XP here in Pakistan in 2007 which was modified by Saleh Kakar (a software engineering student), and it became so popular with customized default fonts and icons and manipulated registries with a stock boot logo and some added software like media player, firefox, antivirus and games came pre-installed, that users thought of it as an official Microsoft release of new build of Windows XP. It wasn't horrible at all though and yeah, It was damn successful having been sold millions of copies in the country.

It was a XP installation and I remember that fake Aero effect and the weird app thingy that was on the top. I even fixed my teacher's PC one day and he had a weird XP clone also themed with pirates for some reason 😂😂
Btw for clarification: I have no fucking idea why it happens but I see PC repair shops in Egypt always install weird unnecessary programs like WinRAR, 7zip, VLC, MPC, Winamp, Realplayer everythig they have on their flash drive will install it. You may name it an Egyptian tradition? 😂

As for you being wrongly accused of "pirating the computers" (tf is that even supposed to mean), all I can say is that it's something that has happened to me before but I was able to get away with it because in the end there was no proof, plus everything here is pirated so who cares at all.

the computers from the engineering labs have the vista bootscreen, so I hoped they were vista PCs, but somehow they ran W7. I've never seen Vista school pcs, both a good thing (I've never seen Vista fall that low, polluted with school-bloat),and a bad thing (I'd love to use vista at school though).
The W10 PC have often had the litteral start menu blocked (!) (this is why you don't block the freaking universal platform - half of the OS depends on it now it's not just some toy UI anymore). I still don't get why they block so much stuff when they could just give students normal user accounts and have a perfectly good level of security.
My poor german teacher, who was not good with computers before COVID, has been given by the school the worst computers: one that kept BSODing as it was slowly commiting autodestruction, one without an OS and/or without a hard drive...
i'm still not sure why in middle school they set all PCs to the "windows classic" theme, but someone sparked a rumor that it was my fault because I had "pirated and reinstalled windows 95" (it was 2014) and I was bullied for it.
They left a "uninstall iACA" link in the start menu (iACA is the school-spyware they used to control us). One time I clicked it, and somehow it worked. I almost faced really bad repercussions because I had "pirated the computers". (the whole school thought I was somehow a hacker even though I had no skills then, I just could really use microsoft office)

(an horrifying lot still puts itself on the QAT folder even though the QAT has been dead for ages and microsoft has been shunning apps that did that since the beginning. and then schools block editing the desktop so we have to bear them all.

Audiowerfer while I get the purpose of WSL I’m worried that m$ is gonna do something shitty to it and make Linux into another open technology that has been “augmented” by M$ but so filled with proprietary nonsense that makes it separate from Linux and I really don’t want to see that. WSL might be great, but I’m worried that Microsoft is going to somehow break it for the people who want to see desktop Linux get some adoption and thus better support. To repeat, it’s fine that people use it but I am wary of M$ that’s all.

This was very commonly famous and used in old egyptian forums by a lot of teens...

I remmber they did batman themed, other football teams, islamic themes ,, hello kity themes, and if they needed something like the drag effect they used some sort 3rd party apps that do the trick and install it with windows ...

(Before someone asks why I do it: I use MPC-HC only to play .mkv files, and VLC for all the other file formats WMP can't play. Yes I know VLC can play .mkv files as well, but for some reason they look really glitchy when I do that, yet they play perfectly on MPC-HC. Then WinRar is for small files, and 7-Zip is for larger files, or for when I need to use Locale Emulator, since I also have the 32 bit version)
