You were right about the pacing going EXTREMELY FAST. This "special" was originally written as a full feature movie (hence why characters come and go without proper explanation or good character development).
The version you watched is "2 standard episodes" sized (released in 1987 as part of the tv show of Generation 1); but the ORIGINAL "tv special" version (1 hour including long toy comertials) includes another song and more time spent with the dwarf mage & the rabbit [it is just filler]; but it was never released on DVD [there are only badly aged, low_quality domestic VHS recordings].
FUNFACTS! #1 Twilight's Mom's name . . . is "Twilight Velvet", and she is based off of this Twilight, from G1. ;)
#2 Applejack was G4 creator Lauren Faust's favorite pony when she watched this show growing up, and she still has her G1 figurine of her. This is why, other than the redesigned models, which were better suited for animation than these, AJ looks so much like her G1 counterpart, and still has the same name.
#3 Spike is the only character who has recurred throughout each generation of MLP.
As for how fast things are moving, welcome to most cartoons of the '80s and early '90s, when developers felt that kids wouldn't be able to follow detailed plots, so they made things really fast and just rushed through things. Having grown up in the '90s, I got to see cartoons change and mature.
3:11 "Twilight? You kind of look like Twilight's mom." I don't think that similarity was a coincidence. The design for Twilight Velvet was probably an homage to g1.
This was made back in the mid 80's. Generation 1 of my little pony was pretty cheesy, but pretty much all shows in that era were. Most shows in that time were just toy commercials. It may not have been that good, but at least G1 had actual stories and conflict, which is more than what I can say about most of G3, which is just unadulterated girliness. That may be some people's thing, though, so I won't judge. Tirek is a centaur, by the way. Kind of surprising that even back in the beginning, MLP had some pretty awesome villains.
The first two full episodes of G1 (split into smaller episodes for syndication, with a few cuts - there are a couple pieces missing from the original in what you just watched) were TV specials, and are pretty high quality, especially when you consider 80s cartoons in general. After that, it transitions to the TV series, the animation is farmed out to a cheaper overseas company, and the stories get WAY younger. Either way, it IS kind of neat to see the start of things, isn't it?
1984 this came out... year before I even existed. The writing is so rushed and random. Still, I can't hate it. This one was really promising and certainly the best part of G1!. Sadly the G1 show itself is, in my opinion, so much worst than this movie. They didn't bother developing, or even introducing characters in this one because none of them is going to be seen again in this generation.
The pacing is fast because you watched a heavily edited version. I mean overall the pacing is up there, but the edited version you watched doesn't help at all.
It’s definitely a different style and you can see little grains of what would eventually be G4. But take it from somebody who has seen clips of G3 and worse G3.5 that stuff is barely even animation. I mean animatics have more life to them than those things.
Well, not all g3 things were made alike. For instance, I'd say that "A Very Minty Christmas" had a good deal more charm than "Meet the Ponies" or "Princess Promenade".

I've seen the full version; Mr. Moochick's song was trippy as balls!

21:56 Scorpan was the Burger King all along!
1 like"He's getting Spike abused even in generation one?"
5 likesYep, Spike abuse is a long-standing tradition that started long before you were born. :)
20:28 "Oh that ass!"
0 likesTwilight's mom has got it goin' on! =D
I believe Scorpan is a . . . Gargoyle? I dunno, but Tirek is meant to be a Centaur. ;)
3 likesFirefly was Lauren Faust's inspiration for g4 Rainbow Dash.
2 likesBelieve it or not, in g3, Rainbow Dash was an earth pony.
Shoo bee doo, shoo shoo bee doo!
2 likesI'd advice you watch "The Return of Tambelon" as well. Among other reasons, I think it's actually pretty good.

6 likesIf you ever review G3, try "My Little Pony: A Very Minty Christmas". Minty is voiced by Tabitha St. Germain.

HASRRO, INC.
It's even spelled correctly on the line right below that! How did they miss that?!
Gen 3 was actually likable to some extent. It's Gen 3.5, otherwise known as Newborn Cuties, that everyone hates and rightfully so.
