not mentioned in the credits but im one of the people responsible for some hexedits/patches in this mod (old volume control/sndvol32 backported from xp/reactos, display properties backported from reactos, probably some other things i forgot to add here)

i wouldnt say the remnants are a majority of this mod but its more the backwards compatibility of windows allowing a lot of things to get backported and the way windows does things (control panel view is in directui etc)

Firefox is this customisable because the UI is composed of HTML and CSS. So many people are so used to chromium they don't realise how good this browser is.

As you said, changing notifications and UWP apps wouldn't be possible by now, because in the end you can't modify the kernel, and removing or replacing uwp apps would break the system or make it unstable.

The Windows modding community consists of two parts: people who do stuff like this and Chinoduby.

Firefox is really customizable if you are not afraid of getting your hands dirty, as the whole UI is defined by XUL, Mozilla's HTML derivative optimized for program interfaces. There is also a Chromium skin for Firefox, which completely replaces the UI with old chrome's UI and even supports Chrome and Edge themes along with Firefox themes.

It always amazes me to see the windows shell modified so heavily without crashing, since it's so interwoven with the kernel. Huge admiration for anyone pulling this off.

Back in my time we used to mod Windows XP to look like Windows Vista or 7, now we mod Windows 10 to go back to those times when we were happy.

Give talented people the tools and the time, they can do almost anything. This is a good example of that.

Windows modders are doing amazing work. Wouldn't be surprised if they eventually bypass the few hurdles left.

It’s funny that in the past we had something called “eXPerience pack” for Windows 9x systems to have theme support, 32 bit icons, and so. And now we have the same thing but in the opposite direction 😅

Reminds me of a story I heard about Commodore in the Amiga days. IIRC one dev refused to upgrade from Amiga OS 1.x to 2.x, which has a different colour palette.

In response the other Devs modded 2.x to resemble 1.x and installed it on their system.

the problem is, that - because it is modding - it adds overhead. especially since you need to touch the os at many locations to get it working like this almost indistiguishable from xp.
normally i would expect microsoft to OFFER inbuilt themes for xp, 7, 8, vista ... for all newer OS. with the advantage that you should also be able to choose if you want dwm / 3d acceleration of the desktop or not.
in the end it's a nice proof of concept. like many things nowadays. but for me it means i stay with my quad boot, xp + 7 + 10 + debian

What I love about this is that it's almost 100% Windows XP, except that it works on modern hardware and supports modern software. If I ever had to install Windows, I would certainly install this.

The impressive part is that UWP will not work if DWM is not running, and DWM has its own decorator. Which means someone had to port Luna.

I really miss the semplicity of the old Windows versions.. sometimes I struggle to find some options in windows 11 because I'm still used to Windows XP, Vista and 7... the newer versions of windows try to hide some complex tools and I find this a bad move, because It makes us lose control over our computers, they always look more like tablets and smartphones

This is exactly what I have been looking for ages, I have a LAN cafe and we were planning on doing a retro/nostalgic day for our born in 80s/90s to bring some good vibes back and I was really struggling to make it work for our modern PCs even thought about running Windows XP in a virtual box. But this is really magnificent! ❤️❤️

Interesting they found a way around the limitations of Windows 10 versions after 1809. They thought it was impossible but here they are in 21H2, absolute madlads.

I've known the guy who made this since 2020, and I used to think the small mods he'd do to his own pc were impressive. When he released this I can say for certain me and everyone else thought it was really impressive. He used to post screenshots and none of us could tell that it was windows 10!

Honestly I'm kind of amazed. Because to be honest it doesn't even seem that Windows XP other window themes are purposely filler as they do look more modern. So like... I mean default XP has always looked quite childish but other themes work wonderfully! And it's just truly customisation that matters! Not boring color swaps and animation and transparency.

Firefox is surprisingly customizable. It's insane. When I switched from Chrome, I managed to make it look and work exactly like Chrome. But I had to switch to Brave due to lack of some Chromium specific extensions. :(

my dream windows 10 skin is windows 7 with its fully fledged theme and sounds and everything with all its features and its integrations working with very minimal windows 10-like ui elements (notifications is an exception i can bare with) but hoenstly i feel likt thats too much to ask and just having a theme working is amazing enough i wonder why microsoft doesnt use their noggin and just add themes back into windows 10/11 which also gives the user options to go back to older themes similar to how xp you can get it back to like the very legacy skin

Honestly, this is amazing and all.. But still disappointing at the end of the day - Changing winver screen logo to say Windows XP.. Who thought of that? Same with Firefox logo change to IE 6. Lack of custom LogonUI is another massive minus, same for the installer. And while installer is, as Enderman himself noted, barely important, it's still a part of the overall Windows experience, LogonUI even moreso. Windows Media Player should have had been WMP 9, instead of 10, eventually VLC with custom made WMP 9 skin - We all know why. UWP apps looking as they do can be forgiven, so can notifications and all those things, all due to technical limitations, but again, the other things make the mod not really worth it. Another aspect that can be forgiven though, from the positives of this mod: "Internet Explorer" being Mozilla Firefox in disguise is a good move. You may think of those things like unnecessary nitpicks and dumb complaints - I think of it as something ruining the experience as they are all very visible. This is an overall great showcase of modding community and it's power, but also an massive disappointment. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone as an daily driver because of the mess that this is.
