Moby Grape was a rock and psychedelic rock band of American roots in the 1960s that was known for contributing to the singing and writing of all five members, combining elements of jazz, country and blues along with rock. Because of the power of the debut album, several critics consider Moby Grape the best rock band to come out of the San Francisco music scene in the late 1960s.
The group was founded in late 1966 in San Francisco. Frontman and rhythm guitarist Alexander "Skip" Spence (original drummer of Jefferson Airplane), lead guitarist Jerry Miller and drummer Don Stevenson (both former Frantics), rhythm guitarist (and son of actress Lorette Young) Peter Lewis (of Cornells) and bassist Bob Mosley wrote are songs for their debut album Moby Grape (1967). In a marketing campaign, Columbia Records immediately released five singles at once, and the band was perceived as overly intense. Still, the record was critically acclaimed and quite commercially successful, and The Move covers its anchovy ode to the hippiedom, “Hey Grandma”. Spence’s “Omaha” reached the lower rungs of the U.S. singles charts in 1967, and Miller-Stevenson’s “8:05” became the country rock standard (covered by Grateful Dead, Robert Plant, Guy Burlage, and others). Moby Grape has achieved the status of a highly regarded rock album today. In addition to the marketing gap, the band members found themselves in legal trouble due to accusations (later rejected) of hanging out with underage women, and the band's relationship with their manager deteriorated rapidly. The second album, Wow, was a critical and commercial failure. During filming, Spence came to the studio with an ax, intending to kill Stevenson; he was committed, and after being released from Bellevue Hospital he traveled to Nashville to record his only solo album, Oar. The band released three more albums: Moby Grape ’69, Truly Fine Citizen and 20 Granite Creek. In 1972, Bob Mosley released his only solo album, after which he left the group. The rest was a soldier for two decades, recording and performing to a small but dedicated audience. Moby Grape was an example of a talented band that, through a combination of poor management and inexperience, never fully reached its potential. Along with Flamin ’Groovies, they were a bit of an anomaly on the San Francisco rock scene; their conciseness and strong roots in country music and early rock and roll seemed to work against them. Besides, perhaps because they were so versatile, their image was a bit nebulous; as writer Robert Christgau said, "All they really missed was the boss, and what could be more American than that?"
