Two assassins from Cedar Walton - back on one CD! The first is Mobius - a real discovery by pianist Cedar Walton - an unusual electric album from the 70s - quite a surprise, given the mostly acoustic sound of most of Cedar’s other records! However, the album is killer - and has a fresh, full funky jazz download at the time - not the usual CTI copycat mode, but instead this compelling hybrid of elements that includes lots of Fender Rhodes from Walton, cute guitar likes by Ry Kawasaki and lots of Ray Mantilla root percussion and Omar Clay - two players who really make the album beautiful and earthy at the bottom. And the rest of the group is wonderful - and includes tenor Frank Foster, alto and baritone Charles Davis and trumpet Roy Burrowes - all fresh players opening a big can of soul for the set - to titles that include the classic break version of "Off Minor", plus "Blue Trane" , "Soho" and "Road Island Red". Beyond Mobius is a great electric set by Cedar Walton - and a set that goes beyond his previous Mobius album, in case you can’t guess from the title! The style is a little tighter here - with a few backing vocals on a few cuts, emphasizing the basic jazz elements from Walton on a series of keyboards and synths, Eddie Harris on tenor and Blue Mitchell on trumpet - all tucked away along with some narrow guitar lines by Eric Gale and Cornell Dupreea! The keyboards definitely get a great solo time in the spotlight, but the overall sound is pretty strong - a nice instrumental funk approach, except for the added choral vocals in a few places.
