i read the title and was like "oh shit" then i saw this comment and was like "oh so he meant a crappy knockoff of it" (there is an app called walpaper engine on steam)
One time when I was a kid I saw a YouTuber playing sonic adventure on pc and thought video games were free
I searched up sonic adventure and found the steam page for it (I’m still surprised I waited until 2021 to create my steam account when I had the invitation right there). Because I thought you could still install games for free legally I ignored steam and went to CNET (at the time I thought I heard of them somewhere so I thought the site was safe).
I installed sonic adventure not knowing it was a pirated copy and when I was in the installation wizard about to install Windows 7 saved my ass (or just the installer but I don’t think so) and told me that the copy could have total control of the entire pc.
Even though I was a little kid I knew enough to play it safe and not install the pirated copy after reading TOTAL CONTROL OF YOUR ENTIRE PC. Good ending is my brother bought me sonic adventure and sonic adventure 2 on my Xbox, so good ending for sega, me, and my FBI agent who would hate to arrest a little kid.
I'm not saying this video was bad, for it was actually really good. However, when I read the video title I thought it meant that Wallpaper Engine-a popular app from steam that I own which allows you to easily manage wallpapers and set animated wallpapers for you desktop-was malicious. Golly-gee, I sure was happy to see some weird ass program being installed on your youtube video and not wallpaper engine.

Really, reeally nice and beginners friendly, very well executed, just you missed the fact that it's not really the selling your data part the problem, it's the fact that anybody can use your machine as an exit node for vpns, and if they go somewhere not very legal, you'll be the last ip they see... Isp will cut your internet if you fail to remove it after a couple of warnings!
And if your device is connected with your social media accounts, your account can still be potentially restricted or even disabled because of the "suspicious activity in your IP address" when your device become the exit node for any malicious VPN services
Microsoft has biggest data bases of stuff because of how much telemetry they collect Personal exprience If you remove bloat and most of telemetry you can get your hands on in Windows 10 you essensially download 900mb of ram.
it technically doesn't say "selling your data" outright it just says that it's installing a proxy endpoint on your machine alongside the wallpaper changer, so other clients can route their traffic through your pc but it's a safe assumption

the "deleting malware lines" part is only possible in .NET or C# based programs (it is possible in others as well but extremely hard), most malware is in written in other languages

Someone is working to create an Open source recreation of Steam's wallpaper engine Though it's Linux exclusive software. So far, they made great progress I think you should check them out if you use GNU/Linux.
