I feel like the queen of the changelings (I forgot her name) is using the mirror pool to make a bigger army.

So in short:
2 gaurds long ago went to the mirror pool and pulled out enough clones to make an army. When ponies who joined that were not clones, celestia used a visual spell to make them look like one of the clones, which is why some clones have swapped horns/wings and a few look like alicorns. And as more time goes on, more and more ponies start joining and there is no longer a need to look alike.

i somewhat disagree after watching episode 3 of season 9, where shining armor explained that more guards were being added for extra defense, and we could see female guards and some more variety, and i think they came from recruitment

I always thought of it as a situation similar to the sentinels of the tomb of the unknown soldier, like for the ones that directly serve Celestia they want a certain look, while for the ones that do non regal services their look isn't as important.

Hi sawtooth! I am one of your biggest fans, your facts and theories are so interesting. Celestia has known Equestria ever since Queen Galaxia and king Universe gave birth. They were destined to be princesses to rule and help Equestria over time. The knew Equestria ever since they were born so they could possibly know the Mirror lake. And like your theory, yes... They used 2 separate or different guards and sent them to the mirror. After they made enough clones they headed back. They lived for 500 years because the ones that out an age spell was Queen Galaxia and king Universe. They created Equestria as part of the world for the ponies. Celestia and Luna are the rulers for they are the daughters of the King and Queen. Luna was of course taught by King Universe and Celestia was meant to control the sun by the responsibility of queen Galaxia. Therefore, they know the Mirror lake better than anybody else in Equestria. Bye

This is what make MLP's a great and fun show. They developed and expand the world so vast that it wouldn't even be strange to used and exploited the animator's mistake and lazyness for a better storyline, plot and more developed world. Changelling was one other examples; knowing the name's origin in european's folktales, i think it pretty safe to say that the Changelling was actually a fairy and not a bug, the reason why an equine bug was choose as a design might have been due to the fact that they thought it would make more sense in a world with the exception of dragon, most of major race around Equestria that appear frequently throughout the show was full of four leg especially equine type animal. If this is the case, then that explained the newly-reform Changeling design that many didn't like (or as some called Metamorphoses Changeling).

The pool could’ve also been used for the changelings. They all look pretty similar until they change, and only one that looked different was the one changelings brother. My theory is probably wrong because they showed a scene of them younger so unless they have a baby donor to go into the pool every time it doesn’t really make much since. Some also have very different personality’s

It makes more sense as well when you remember ponies aren't as prone to being warriors. Its possible the clones were used until culture of equestria started encouraging more brave souls to emerge causing an uptick in recruitment numbers.

My only explanation is coming from right after watching the initial video back in 2015 about how the Guards have spells that make them all look more Uniform and alike.

After the Changeling invasion and a few other incidents similar it was becoming clear that Equestria's Royal Guard was what it really was, a scarecrow.

So the Guard had to reform, with Shining Armor out they probably got a new Captain to shore things up abit. It takes awhile bit it eventually pays off in the recruitment and better training of Stallions and Mares alike.

And to prove this, and to show to the world at large aswell as they're citizens that not only did they have a new and Improved Guard, but that anyone could Join the Guard.

I mean its why despite wearing the same Uniforms for Western Militaries sometimes they include people of different skin colors or genders so that everyone knows they're welcome to Join.

So really, there's three possibilities. A) Pure cloning, B) Various ponies simply made to look the same, or C) A mix of A and B (C1 - Cloning came first to reduce costs; C2 - Disguises came first until cloning was possible, then they came back again, before being abandoned due to the change of rulers [Celestia -> Twilight]).

My thought was that there was a spell on the guard. One that makes them all look similar to help not only unify them, but to protect them. Ponies can very easily be identified by their coloration and the cutie marks especially, so if one guard is high ranking and has a lot of secret information, you don't want any enemies getting a hold of that. Make all the guards look similar via a spell while working, have the spell deactivated at the same time they are sent home, but "wink" them (teleport) to their own homes so it's harder for enemies to keep track of them and capture them. Hell, maybe even plant some fake cutie marks on them when they're off duty if their marks may be easily singled out as military related.

I always thought that sentry ponies were usually born with one or two physical traits on top of the shield varieties of cutie marks that grant them the guardsman class.

An explanation I’ve read in a fanfic and think could also be it: it’s magic put on the uniform. They all look the same to avoid personal grudges, as well as to keep relatives and friends from recognizing and distracting them.

I had an idea that they could have implemented into the show. That Every Princess must pick the loyalist of followers to become the Royal Guard. So they use a Duplication spell that multiplies all the guards but there are some side effects. Some guards come out as Alicorns even though they aren't. An that explains the half Pegasus,and the other half Unicorns.

I think most of it checks out, except some of the glitches migh5t have been changelings! Crysalis's servants perhaps. They wouldn't know alicorn are rare because they don't care that much about ponies, so they made themselves like that since they are used to having both wings and horns.

It could be that they gave the clones time magic, or it could just be that the clones, being simple, one-track-minded copies being made entirely of magic, do not have the complexity to replicate ageing.

Now we need to know 1) how long can you keep making clones of the same type, and 2) is it possible to put a pony in suspended animation? If so the other alternative would be to take your prototypes, clone them, then put the prototype to sleep for a few decades (presumably they agreed to do this "for Equestria!"), then bring them out and make some more. As new volunteers of the right sort for copying become available you add them to the "library".

If taken far enough this alternate theory even raises the possibility that the Celestia we've been seeing for the past 1000 years plus is actually a clone who keeps getting recycled. It is even possible that the real Celestia, with or without Star Swirl's help, figured out how to create a better personality to prevent a "Too Many Pinkie Pies" type crisis.

Or to get really fringe freaky, she can move her soul to a new clone body every so many years. Fresh new body, same well aged personality. Now if that isn't nightmare fanfic fodder I don't know what is.

I just watched your videos on who you thought bailed Nightmare Moon out of the moon and just finished the one where you thought Celestia did it, and you said that the show hasn't really said who controls the stars, then I realized maybe Star Swirl the Bearded did it. It depends on when Luna was banished and when Star Swirl sacrificed himself. If Luna was banished before Star Swirl was trapped in Limbo, then the theory could work. It would make sense, Star Swirl would want the sisters to be together again. But then why wait 1000 years. Maybe Star Swirl knew that there might be someone that could help Celestia transform her back. I also think that Star Swirl wrote the book that Twilight read at the beginning of the show. This is just a theory but I think it could work.

Head canon, The royal guard used to use a strict workout regimen, causing the build, and then an alicorn spell to change their coat color. Recently, due to Twilight and the increase in villains, more ponies like mares were added, and then the workout was eased up on. I like your idea a lot tho!!

I think it would make a super great storyline for a pony without friends or siblings to go into the mirror pool, like with Gigi in Monster High. The clone could become jealous of their original self when they abandon them to make friends, which could result in an imposter situation, and the clone being reformed and living their own identity in Equestria.

Sawtooth I have an idea for the daylight cycle in Equestria. Equestria is on a flat disc and the sun revolves around it like on the 2 sides of the disc so it would be day and night all around Equestria. it also explains the Princesses Luna works only at night but unlike our world night and day are completely separate same with celestia

I always liked to view it as that celestia likes to find ponies that look the same to be guards just because.

You also have to take into consideration that Hasbro makes some glitches. The alicorn guards were probably easter eggs or mistakes, which is why whenever you say that what could very likely be an animation error, I don't really take it in. You can't particularly use it. Hasbro has always duplicated ponies, especially in crowds of them, it's just easier on them probably and yeah probably the lazy way out

who even knows how pool acts when two diferent ponies use it at same time, they could be mixed up by using it two diferent ponies at time, later increasing royal guards staff in Canterlot, thus having variety in ranks

It would be interesting that if the pool was used too much on one pony, it would start to "malfunction" and create alicorns that are either incapable of using their horns or incapable of flying, and the features are just kind of there as a visual instead of a tool.

if you cloned yourself, would your clone also be a changling or would it just take whatever form you were in while cloning yourself?

My headcannon is that they have a spell which makes their unified appearance, like the white (or gray) and blue are their standard looks, kinda like a uniform. And that without the spell, they have unique looks ^^

To tell the truth, when writing Alicornation years ago after Cadance just got revealed, I had the idea to use the Mirror Pool to clone an army. Sadly, my writing was beyond awful and that story ended up canceled before I got there.

So I support this theory. Altho................................did Celestia ever use this spell outside of the guards? Was it dropped during the 2017 film? Did Luna or Twi know of it? May I have permission to use this look alike spell?

Random thing I thought of:
If the mirror pool copies all attitudes and attributes, wouldn't there be infinite or close to infinite magic in the pool?
We haven't seen a unicorn/alicorn in the pool yet so no idea if the magic from them could be stolen/taken
But if it could be, I don't think that the soldiers would be cloned. Discord probably would've sensed this by now.

personally i believe that the royal gaurd mandated that they dye their coat and hair so they wouldn't look distracting, just like how the us army requires you to shave your hair. the later gaurds are due to those rules being dropped slightly and more variety in looks was allowed.

With the pinkies, they're all earth ponies and a much smaller percentage of the royal guards, so they would be a lot less likely for thed mirror pool to have glitched on them

I have a theory that Starlight and Starswirl are related think about it Starlight was able to achieve magical levels equal to Starswirls even improving one of his spells. Allso there names are only slightly different. They're cutie marks both consist of a swirl and a star.

I recently came up with a batty idea for a fan-fic, a sort of sequel to a particular episode as well as the 'Too Many Pinkies' episode, starring Fluttershy and it features the Mirror Pond, where an accident with it causes an unexpected return of a certain character, whom Fluttershy tries to befriend, unfortunately, a certain Earth Pony isn't very happy about seeing this character again...

Having not only possibly hundreds of ponies with identical looks and cutie marks, but also have them be around for centuries would be a heck of an achievement to have this be a secret and not leak to the press at any point. Unless it did, because how do you keep all the guard from socialising with others for this long? Perhaps it's simply such a common knowledge at this point that no one bats an eye.

Some guards are wearing enchanted armor to make them look uniform. Others are Changelings that aren't forced to wear this armor, but turn into a unique pony form to keep with their new culture of individuality and to perform community service for their crimes.

We dont actually know the life expectancy for ponies in MLP so they could be immortal for all we know. Maybe the guards are all thousands of years old but they have some really good plastic surgeons in Equestria.

What if they were all initially under a disguise spell so if there was a breach from the changelings they would be unable to distinguish the guards from one another and thus be unable to mimic their loved ones. Now that the changelings have been reformed many don’t see the point of keeping up with the spell but some may continue with it for the sake of tradition

THe E.U.P. guard was not needed until Luna was banished. Didn't you pay attention at all during "Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3"? As for their their uniform look, their armor is / was enchanted. Putting it on caused their coats and manes to change. As for why: militias don't promote individuality for a reason; they're much easier to train.

They could have used a statue spell on the duplicate explaining the Nightmare Moon Statue. I'm thinking only Zecora and Celestia know of it being a clone.

I think it might be a bit simpler. Pinkie's clones, while originally very simple minded, probably would have developed more cohesive personalities as time went on. The one Pinkie clone we see in a later episode in the background certainly acts nervous about being found, and isn't even being goofy in doing so, which implies not only complex thought, but a divergent personality based on experiences.

While what you say is still a good possibility, what stood out to me is that the Mirror Pool was closed off after the Pinkie incident, and didn't seem used in a long, long time even when it was first used. While a few ponies using it would not change much, but an army? That would be a lot more obvious. The original guards were most certainly clones in this scenario, but an alternative to continued clones and some sort of immortality spell is that, well, the clones might be able to reproduce properly. And given that they all look the same, it would make sense that they pass down the same genes.

And it could even be that Celestia picked the first two clones specifically so that every physical trait was dominant for ponies. Not only do dominant genes usually form a "strong and important" psychological reaction in most species, but each generation would have a very, very high chance of looking extremely similar, no matter who their partner was.

The reason that more ponies are different now probably has less to do with a lack of spell, and more to do with the recent events in Equestria, with seemingly normal ponies (and notably, more mares) doing heroic deeds and saving the day. Which would inspire those not in traditional Guard families to join up. And also, Celestia or Luna probably realized the need to recruit after such events as well.

This is a great theory and it makes a lot of sense, but I did find one discrepancy in this theory: if the clones came from the Mirror Pool, they would have all sounded the same. Pinkie’s clones all sounded the same but in one episode when two gray unicorn guards were right next to each other they sounded different, so they could have been twins or clones. Maybe one of them was the original and it’s twin brother. I had a theory that they were all born the same way but since Sawtooth ruled that out who am I to disagree with a pro theorist?

New theory: Did changelings DRINK the mirror pool waters to change into other ponies?

Duplicating those ponies are so horrifying......() I prefer the theory that Celestia(Or Starswirl) kinda adapted from the magic of the mirror pool and that spell is even stronger than the original mirror pool, it can make ponies look very alike without clearing their minds. But the spell will eventually fade and some mistakes will be made during the process.

I have a very good theory that shows how they used to look the same but now they don’t....

Personal head cannon here. I think that he's onto something here. Cause if I remember correctly didn't starswirl create the dimensional mirror? If so the what's to say that it wasn't inspired by the mirror pool. Both involve doppelgangers,a mirrored surface,and powerful magic. Plus it would explain why the mirror came into existence at all,if he was trying to replicate the spell of the mirror pool but get rid of the negatives side affects of the lower intelligence of the mirror pool clones.
Accidentally creating a portal to other dimensions instead due to a mistake.
But that's just a theory. A pony theory.

In season two we saw one of the royal guards taking his helmet off and he had an different hair color so it’s maybe just the helmet that makes them look different. And if some unicorn wanna be an Pegasus guard they used magic to help

Because if Rainbow Dash didn't make the sonic rainboom, non of the mane 6 would've got their cutie marks. And, Twilight wouldn't have passed the test. (This is just a theory I had)

Think about it, you wouldn't hire crap guards. But what if they had no where else to go cause you made them? And the reflecting process can mess up the cloans a bit.

The question is: why celestia make a royal army with clones and didn’t apply it on wonderbolt ? (Maybe she is waiting the best flyer…)

Here's a story:
When Equestria was first founded, Celestia needed guards to defend their kingdom. But it was just after the war with Grogar, and no one wanted to see another battle. Apart from two, a brown unicorn with brown eyes, and a white pegasus with blue eyes.

When the two were foals, they had heard stories about the mirror, so when Celestia found out, it was the perfect way to make the perfect army to protect her people, because every one of the clones swore to give their lives for Equestria.

However, other ponies heard about it, and some have still been using the pool ever since.

In real life people try to make guards look the same so maybe they all dyed there mane, tail and there body the same colours as one of the guards so they all look the same.

Celestia can easily disguise a bunch of ponies with the disguise spell. I don't believe it's cloning because that is unethical for the original 2 ponies. Then at Season 8+ they decided to let go of the disguise to be more accepting. (Gallas becomes a Royal Guard on the last episode too.)

Crack theory: The royal guards being the same color isn't unusual at all. It's just that every other pony dyes their mane, coat, and tail; and the Royal Guards don't allow their members to do that.

Hear me out, the main characters are 3 brother bears just living everyday life except they're not really brothers. They adopted each other to make their family. They chose each other and now call each other "brothers".

Maybe Celestia and Luna did the same? Maybe they were such close friends that they adopted each other as sisters? Celestia had already done this by making Cadence her neice. Maybe that's what happened with her nephew Prince Blue Blood?


I think I posted this comment a couple years ago but I can't remember but yeah, just like how Celestia and Luna look nothing alike, neither do Panda, Grizz and Ice Bear.

The royal guards may seem like they're there for show most of the time, but i think that's because they represent the Queen's Guard of England, and to think the only thing the Canterlot royal guard has ever done that was useful was arrest Cozy Glow.

They could've just put them all in full body armor. That'd make it understandable that theyd all look the same. No actual features would show that way and it'd have made more sense. But your theory also makes sense I guess ^^'

The mirror pool idea is awesome! But I'm not sure about the age spell. On the colorless images we can't see their colors. Maybe they were different guards than. So Celestia probably used the pool in like every decade. And when there were more attacts in Equestria, more ponies wanted to join.
I wouldn't worry about background ponies. Among a thousand people there are several similar looking, and the looks of people are divided by height, face, and a lot more, ponies are mostly divided by colors.

It's possible that some were created with the mirror pool,some were made with the duplication spell,and some were just found and had to use the disguise spell.

We all have seen the tree of Harmony. And the cutie marks on its trunk. And we also know that it was planted LONG before Twilight. But the destiny is the thing that definitely exists in Equestria. So I wouldn't be surprised that the most of the royal guard have been destined to get this job and has the fitting appearance at birth. And the simultaneous selection based on appearance can be at play as well.
But we all know the "lazy" truth . 😉
And additionaly, mirror pool clones usually lack some .... perseverance or selfcontrol should i say it politely. 😅

I honestly just think it was a budget constraint, and that it was only later in the show when production value increased, we started to see variations.

Perhaps if there are not alot of those 'Alicorn' Guards they may have been pince's of lost kingdoms from Far back willing to protect equestria and the 2 Royal Sisters,it could be possible that the diquise spell was used on them tho but im not so sure

It is funny how much someone can theorize about effects of budget cuts. Royal Guards are soldiers, soldiers are uniform, so they are uniform. The background needs to be filled up with ponies, so just clone some.
My theory though: Most of the time we only saw the parts of the royal guard that were guarding the Princesses/the Castle. Such honour guards have really high standards and restrictions, like having about the same height and similar body features, so they look good on parades and stuff. They are required to die their fur to match the theme of the honour guard. The other guards we see are more like the regular soldiers that have lesser strict standards and they don't have to fit a special theme, so there is a greater variety.

I'm surprised none of the villains have used the pool. Especially Tirek, Chrysalis, and Cozy Glow. I guess you could say they didn’t know it existed but that would be hard to believe. Not to mention cozy glow was a student of the main six, so I’m sure they’ve told stories about their past adventures to their students, so cozy glow must have heard about pink one and the mirror pool. Not to mention if they did copy themselves their copies would probably cause havoc. If they did copy themselves would they have won?

There’s a big hole here. If the mirror pool is such a useful asset...and potentially dangerous if in the wrong hands...why didn’t Celestia protect it better? It just doesn’t add up. Think how easy it would be for a changeling to overhear mention of it and put together the pieces (like the ones you pointed out). Who knows, maybe the changelings have had access to it too? I’m sure you wiuld spot the same phenomena of “repeating characters” more clearly when looking at the “evolved” channelings (sorry, I don’t know the term).

I think people forget the mirror pool exist sometimes

Since they share personality another advantage is a guarantee that the guards will all be LOYAL (if the original two were). Celestia would want to make sure she wouldn't have to deal with traitors.

One problem your theory has, however, is Shining Armor. Not only is he a member of the Royal Guard (which is accounted for in your theory). he is Captain i.e. head. If the Guards really are hundreds or thousands of years old, any one of them would have more training and experience being a guard than ANY single pony could have gotten in a lifetime. You'd have the guard led by someone who was, from their POV, a rank amateur. Unless being Captain is more or less ceremonial and a sinecure that really doesn't make much sense.

Sawtooth I have a fury for you the disharmony clones of the main six I'll have their cutie marks having one color from the main Texas cutie marks switched on to another design of their cutie marks but one thing just doesn't add up twilight's sparkles disharmony clone has hurricane mark looking exactly the same as the original twilight sparkle so I think you should do a fury on that because that is super weird and I don't know why they did that

What if Celestia & Luna had kids? Not, like, *with each other*, but like, long-lived white/grey ponies sounds like their spawn.

I won't read everything in the comments buuut... maybe there aren't so many guards... Maybe Celestia used the pool in the past (or maybe not, because 1000 years ago a lot of things happened, so the ponies were toughened by the difficult moments, they were totally ready to engage as a guard to protect their families), then she lost guards due to age, but she stopped using the pool and she didn't have many new recruits. She still wanted to cause ennemies and invited the impression that she has a big army and even a lot of soldiers ready to stand all day in the castle to give a good impression... when maybe they're mirages from two guards or so. That would make it logical to make the real guards all look the same to not draw attention on the ones who look alike!

Something interesting is that between her fight against Luna 1000 years ago and Nightmare Moon's return in the first episode, not many things happened. So the equestrians were lulled into a feeling of safety, which leads to little vocations in the guard. Except Shining Armour and his friend they saw again at the art expo but idk. And all the mess since the first episode of MLP would have waken ponies up and made them want their families to be safe, so bam! new recruits! But it took years to form them.

Canonically clones and then more peopel volunteered so t u all look different makes sense cause equestrian keeps getting challenged. But it was probably cause it’s easier to draw then copy and paste. And in the later seasons they probably had enough money to make the guards all look different. Also wasn’t all the bad things that happened discord’s fault and he was testing twilight. And that was a big reveal in the last episode. You should make a video about that. Like the seeds that messed up the tree was discord

So, if a pony makes clones of themself are they immortal or do they die along with their clones or do the clones live on? Also, is it possible that the animators were just lazy!😅

I don't think Mirror Pool clones would be a good basis for an army. Beyond lacking a great deal of knowledge, Pinkie's clones also displayed a lack of qualities such as self-control and empathy. One could reasonably say that they were like very small children in adult bodies, and a bunch of children in adult bodies with adult weapons is definitely a recipe for trouble. Perhaps with time clones could grow up, but if so I suspect it would take long enough that preparing the clones to serve would be more work than recruiting and training normal ponies.

It may be that they're clones produced in some other way, but I think the simplest explanation is just that Guard policy changed during the run of the show; the disguise spell used to be mandatory for all but the highest-ranked members, but now it's optional (and generally only used by those who joined the Guard long before the policy changed and would now feel weird wearing the armor while looking like themselves).

Doctors diagnose this as Half Life syndrome. Where all the guards of something like a foundation or science lab to castles and government buildings look like the same.

What would happen if discord went into the mirror pool ? Sense it would make more of him would it sent things of balance ? Same with luna and calestia

Here's my theory, this might sound funny but, what if the guards actually are changlings!!! Remember when. Chrysalis launched the attack when candence and shining armour where getting married!! As proof there was 1 changling who survived! And is now confirmed as the king of the reformed changling!!! So it's possible some changeling managed to pose as the guards...!!!

I know this is an older theory, and basically a shitpost at that, but the change in the appearance of the Royal Guard also seems like it's a bit too close to the Changeling invasion for comfort. If it had been a spell to try and make the Guard look uniform, it would suddenly seem really dangerous to keep that spell when there's an entire species of creatures that can mimic someone's appearance. Imagine how easy it would be to infiltrate the Guard when the only members that don't look exactly the same are the officers, maybe just the Captain.

I don't understand you half the time. just because the 'rulers' were alicorns didn't mean that there weren't others who were naturally born alicorns - just without being in the public eye all the time like the rulers are. You have a pegasus mother/father and a unicorn mother/father, there is then the higher chance of a natural born alicorn - a winged unicorn. Most probably won't pay them much attention at all and alicorns not 'rulers' would probably have found a good calling in the royal guard. I get a spell to help make them 'appear alike' to help protect them since we almost never see them 'off duty'. For all we know, most when removing their armor would appear in different colors than the ones shown. I can only say as to up to season seven on netflix before the show was removed so the 'eight and nine' seasons are completely unknown to me.

Animators spend a hard amount of work and aren't paid very well so most just focus on the flashy bits and make the overall flow of the animation look decent but dont go into the details like making everyone in a crowd look different. This doesnt really need to be theorized..
