honestly the best way to do this that keeps hard ware compatibility is to make a Linux USB with persistent storage and run a XP VM on that. It would run perfectly on any compatible computer, even if it doesn’t support XP.

Nice, I remember running Windows 1.01 from drive which was already setted up.

Windows XP Embedded (after a few updates/service packs) supports USB boot and if you know how to create a working image it will boot. The easier way to get XP To Go, you install Embedded POS Ready 2009 to the flash drive. I already had good luck installing POS Ready 2009 to an external USB Hard disk and it booted just fine, even on other computers.

Ha, I beat you on this. I did this before with POSReady 7. (Techanically Windows 7) But I might do Windows 8.1 in the future. Took like 1 hour or less just to manually make the USB into a Hard Disk using diskpart. So it could it install. Though 1 thing. The startup up is WAY slower than usual. around 3x - 6x slower than a HDD. Edit - Was dumb enough to forgot that Windows XP doesnt support USB booting normally. Anyways, thansk for leaving the files since my SATA cable a USB XP Hard drive might do great

I remember doing the same thing by myself when my hdd suddenly died, and I needed working PC asap. So I installed XP to 8GB USB stick. To avoid the 7B bsod and lack of hard drive errors, you could do some more registry modifications and install modified USB storage driver to trick the OS (it was called Hitachi Microdrive if I recall correctly). It was painfully slow, but if you install EWF (enchanced write filter) driver from Embedded XP, it was very fast with reads from USB and writes straight to RAM, with downside being that it eats RAM very fast if you write anything to disk.

So you're telling me that this USB stick can just get put inside of a computer with any hard drive and it boots into XP? I need that. You could actually probably sell that for a couple hundred dollars, even though it's just a cheap usb stick with XP downloaded on it which is optimized with tampered drivers. That's literally crazy.

Probably since windows XP was never designed to be booted from a USB there is a hardwired check somewhere to make sure there is at least one hard drive in the system

I think i read about 0x7b somewhere, and that it has to do with NTDETECT
You can find a "fixed" version, and try injecting that into your ISO and see if that fixes that annoying issue.

BUT what would really interest me is whether it's possible to install Windows XP on a VHD and boot it via the Windows 10 Loader...

I don't expect it will be Secure boot compliant but that will be a very interesting thing to see.

I think that the pc does a check on the system and the hard drive needs to be present for this check but since it is only done during the boot process, you can get away with yanking the drive out since its not used outside of this self test. At least, this is my theory on why you needed to put it in 3 times

First install the media on your computer or another computer
Second, you need to shut down the computer and remove the hard drive
The third step, plug in your USB and enter u to boot
Next you should know how to do it, go to 10 to go, then install the pe system
Boot into pe system by bootstrapping in 10 to go
install windows xp in pe
Go through the installation process normally
Ok, note that this tutorial may not work for some computers, but mine works anyway😀

I think the computer gets trick. When you insert the hard drive it get trick to start the process but when you remove it. The computer has no option but to install it on the USB and give errors. (I don't think this is right or wrong. I just think this is the case. )

5:44, the reason for it to put back the hard drive is because the OS will ask to the BIOS to where the OS is and it will detect if there is a Hard Drive and if there is a Hard Drive it will Read and Write to it making it Work (Although maybe it's for the Partitioning of the hard drive making it store all of the data to boot)

I find it funny that Microsoft managed to define Firewire as a boot time device but never did that for USB.

I'll also mention that I used to apply XP to a USB drive a completely different way that skipped this whole setup bit (and by extension your drive shuffle apparently) then apply the USB edits offline so it would boot.

I once made a portable USB version of Windows XP Professional following a tutorial from 2008, in which some files were modified with the cabsdk.exe executable and also .inf and .sif files. In the tutorial they said it worked on an external HD, but I did it with an SD card and it worked perfectly. But Windows wouldn't start on another card adapter or another USB port.

It was most likely implemented to prevent windows from putting your boot files in different places like when you install windows 9x it will put your boot files on a different drive than the one it puts the windows install on super annoying and an odd behavior.

I understand the XP kernel doesn't have SATA/USB support, so booting XP from a USB will crash as the WIndows loads the driver during boot?

However, now with the XP source code available, I wonder if it can be modified. I have an XP running from SATA, but would love to have it run from USB. If not, perhaps ReactOs will?

Regarding need of hard disk for Windows XP to boot, my comment is this;

Since you're using the regular Windows installer instead of command prompt unlike on Windows 10 speedrun, Windows strictly wants to install the bootloader to the hard drive so you can't boot/install it otherwise.

well nice. i will make a "Minecraft to go" project. Yes. I cant easilly drop the launcher, java and the minecraft directory on the flash drive but it will not be the best experience. Imagine going to friend with very low pc... You need Linux. So im here. I will deploy Linux mint on usb 3.0 and then deploying here mc. You may say that if you want to host a server or play singleplayer it may have big "ping" but no. It dont. I have literally everyday OS (Kali Linux) On 3.2 USB drive. 32GB btw. But yea. try it. Its just my Kali to Go. i love it :D

If there is a boot from device option, you can do that and select the usb to make it work without the HDD.

Rufus exactly does the SAME thing. You give the XP ISO and it creates bootable XP installation Usb stick.

Btw, this is not really "Xp to Go" as it is not a "live" environment where "to go" refers in fact.

No wonder you're getting such issues with the standard USB stack... For booting from USB, you really should just use the bootable version instead. There is bootable USB stack for XP/2003, in a Windows XP Embedded 2009 ISO (in a Setup\USB folder on the ISO).

Cool experiment. I've heard about some USB filter driver from Hitachi (cfadisk.inf). After editing device ID it makes Windows XP believe that USB stick is an HDD. I wonder, if that driver could resolve BSOD on no-disk boot.

Maybe (and just maybe) it's a partition problem , windows doesn't recognize partition formatted in a certain way (for example ext4) and for the installation of the XP operating system it should use the NTFS partition on the Hard drive , idk if the system recognizes your Pen drive and automatically sets it to FAT32 and maybe causes problems on the file system check

I tried making a windows xp installation disk using a usb drive, but it gave the usb drive letter C:\
It installed windows on the hard drive, but changed the hard drive letter to F:\
If I have the usb plugged in while installing programs or drivers, it installs them to the usb disk instead of the OS drive
I found this only works with old versions of rufus and windows xp service pack 3.

Maybe you need to insert disk for chkdsk becuse it wants to check disk but when there is no hard disk and maybe usb drivers aren't properly loaded or it ignores usb drives completly so it cannot find the usb device and it fails and crashes

When I installed windows 10 in virtual box, I noticed there is defaultuser() folder on users.But after sometimes, it disappeared.

BRU i am using windows 10 with my usb rn as i am typing :( because my laptop hard disk failed so i am using my 64gb sandisk ultra 3.0 to boot and play games and also i cannot run latest version of windows 10 because when i do it it keeps saying just a moment and keep loading and keep looping so i always use windows november update version 1151 my windows 10 build 10586.164 bad luck for me :(





and also there is a program WinToUse program i use that to install windows in my usb with my stupid old laptop acer intel pentium 1gen very slow 4gb ram so my main computer with the hard disk failed spec is core i3 7gen 8gb ram 500gb hard disk 60hz 1000x better than that stupid intel pentium 1 gen cpu and the program you used was not good then i searched youtube and got wintousb program LOT esier VERY easy to install windows in a usb with the WinToUsb and you don't need to do all the setup the program does everthing you just need to plug it in your laptop or pc and done

i partitioned as much as i can without the installation itself being damaged
i tested it on an old xp pc with win 7 installed
i tried to install windows 7 on the same usb on the other partition
it didn't detect it
i thought what if you formatted it to ntfs but ALSO to mbr (i had it to ntfs and gpt)
my pc broke with a bunch of windows 7 and xp files messed up together and it wouldn't boot but i had win7 setup cmd to work with and a "file explorer" from repair your computer > add drivers > then use the searching program as a file explorer
