46:18 I involuntarily chuckled when you started talking about Starlight and Chrysalis teaming up. Even more so when you started talking about them teaming up with Tirek.
Fun fact. These were the first episodes of the show I actually watched. I was like, "I doubt it has a continuing storyline or anything like that, so it doesn't matter where I start." . . . Yeah, it's safe to say I had my expectations, and they were wrong. But it got me completely hooked on the show, so I think I'm glad my first experience with ponies was these two episodes.
I also thought Pinkie was the main character before I started watching. I was wrong about so many things! But I'm actually glad I was because it's really fun to look back and laugh at myself. XD
Honestly, this is the point of where the show just grows in quality, both visually and world building. Not to mention that some if not most of the episodes to come are just... seriously amazing.
@@mitchwosee8825no. In Amending fences she showed up in the background, spying on Twilight behind a news paper. In What about discord (I think) she was spying in a bush with binoculars (specifically seen when Twilight mentioned time travel)
The show is over, but what it bring will always stay part of the fandom, a lot of new comics are coming and maybe new EG epiosodes, the G5... I was sad too, but i realized that won't stop me to love it
While the comments about being attentive to the background may be appropriate, I'm pretty sure Ponybro is already very observant as seen in previous episodes. Let's not ruin it for him everypony; he will pick up the details without our prompts.
After knowing what starlight did, it's nice to go back and look at the sutttle hints. Like how the ponies who got their cutie marks taken are faded but starlight is the only one who is vibrant in color. And when the mane six get theirs taken, they also become duller in color.
I kind of haven't seen this episode in quite a long time. It was just a new level of disturbing, and with my Fluttershy getting sucked into things, I was pretty scared for her safety. This episode serves as a cautionary tale that things are not always as innocent as they appear, and that danger can sometimes lurk in plain sight. That only makes me more unsettled.
7:09 "Is that where the first Wonderbolts, like the Shadowbolts, appeared in the first episode?" Nope, that was a bridge to the old Castle of the Two Sisters, deep in the Everfree Forest.
I’ve missed seeing S5 episodes. This is my second favorite season next to S9. This premiere is very good and interesting too. When I saw what Starlight was capable of in this premiere, I immediately thought of Sunset Shimmer, as in being one of the few unicorn prodigies we’ve seen in the series. Aside from her, the collection of characters from the village are pretty cool, especially Sugar Belle and Night Glider. Definitely one of my favorite season premieres of MLP.
Night Glider's name was never spoken (only appearing in the credits). She was the dark blue pegasus mare who gave Double Diamond the "air drop", right?
Judging from my experience, your pony merch will become less and less discrete over time since subconsciously you'll adapt and start finding it less and less embarrasing to watch ponies. So yeah, watch out for that ;)
Also, totalitarianism, brainwashing and 1984 references are definitely kid-friendly, definitely.
I love this premiere mostly because of that ;> Kids have to know how totalitarian societies work, and how to deal with them, if they don't want to end up in one in their future.
Honestly, this is my second most favorite 2 parter in the series. This is one of the creepiest episodes in the show for sure, akk these smiles and brain washing... I love it. The lyrics were really deep in the second, "you can't have a nightmare if you never dream"... 37:15 , this is one of my favorite moments, she just made twilight to shut up, I laugh at it every time I watch this episode. So many butts in this episode, its like the show stuff doing it on purpose. Especially the 33:38 moment, such a close up ;P Regarding starlight, she is my third favorite villain and I really like her character, I don't blame you that she makes you feel funny. Season 5 is one of my three favorite seasons in the show, its really good, looking forward to your upcoming reactions man.

Season 2: Discord, the lord of chaos, and Chrysalis, the queen of Changelings. Season 3: King Sombra, the master of fear and darkness. Season 4: Lord Tirek, the giang magic-sucking Centaur. How will they beat that in Season 5? Let's see..... Season 5: oh, just an ordinary Unicorn :D And yet she's the best villain in my book ;) She seems inconspicuous, and she doesn't have any superpowers (beyond ordinary Unicorn magic), but she's clever and devious ;> 22:32 Probably the same thing that they do to you right now :) 13:12 Yup :> Reminds me of those marching hammers from Pink Floyd's "The Wall" music video :J 13:36 True. Equality leads to stagnation. Differences drive motion. 13:50 I think not only Fluttershy is buying into this :D 16:23 Fluttershy in this is a perfect example why tolerance is not always something good, and that it could be used as a slogan to force some ideology upon you ;> 17:30 That would be more than enough for Derpy ;) 19:41 Piggy Pie :) 22:16 Behold! The new iPhone 10 :) It has got all the apps! ;)
24:35 Brainwashing is magic ;> 25:25 They never do, Fluttershy, they never do.... ;q 26:33 Democracy is great, as long as 99% of people are not idiots :q Otherwise, you're screwed :q (Not to mention that what is called "democracy" today is far from one.) 29:06 "I volunteer as a tribute!" :J 29:35 Yeah, time to prove you're truly one of them :q 31:00 That's the thing: he doesn't want to, because he believes that he did something wrong and that he deserves it. That's how cults work. And that's why people can't easily escape the cult even if they're free to do so. The door could have been open and he would still stay inside. 31:23 Reminds me that scene with Twilight explaining crying to Phoenix Wright :J 32:00 Obviously, because she wants to keep an eye on Fluttershy ;> 35:42 And that's what she's leading up to ;> 36:53 HERESY! :q 38:00 This scene is a direct reference to the clip from Orwell's "1984", the same clip that has been used in one old Apple commercial. 39:42 Another interesting aspect of this premiere is that this time it wasn't the mane six who saved the day at the end – they saved other ponies who then saved them later. What goes around, comes around, as they say ;) 40:40 YOU SHALL NOT PASS! :q 40:48 The real question is: where does he keep'em ;D 41:04 A snow surfer :D But hey, that's where his name (Double Diamond) came from ;) In skier/snowboarder lingo, the term "double diamond" is short for "double black diamond", the symbol for which is slapped onto trail signs denoting the most extreme runs. 42:55 Oh, then just wait for her to come out when she get hungry? :q Or send a grizzly bear in? :D 43:05 Actually, she got kicked out :D 43:41 You missed one Wilhelm scream :) 46:46 Oh yeah? Because as far as I remember, Daniel Ingram said that he made this song deliberately bad :D
Yup get ready. Season 5 and a good amount after season 5 have the feels we will all cry with you and laugh with you. Im a season 1 brony. It good to know others will keep the show alive
Hey there! New subscriber here and I don't know why I haven't known another fairly new mlp reactor until now, for sure I enjoyed your commentary and I will see the reactions for previous seasons:) it's great that I stumbled on this particular upload as season 5 is my favorite season alongside 7!
First off, ARTHURIAN LEGENDS FOR THE WIN! Seriously ,Twilight has risen to Royalty through feats only she could have accomplished, and now has a ROUND TABLE for her and her Knights! It's freakin' King Arthur!
Secondly, you replaced AJ's "Ah, shoot" with "Ah, shit" and the first thing that popped into my head was "Here we go again." I'm a fucking Memester. And, also . . . YES! FREAKIN' STARLIGHT GLIMGLAM BABY! MWAH! LOVE YA!
And she gained Starlight Glimmer as Lancelot 's companion, with the difference that she remained loyal to Twilight even when Sunburst used his power 'waifu stealer' vs Twilight, Trixie, Maud, ignoring his childhood friend and designated wife by authors as canon. That's an intriguing theory about Arthurian myth used in part for the MLP lore, thanks.
Starliht Hlimmer is powerful... understatement of the decade. The Feels are coming, and a certain episode here has a climax that i can´t watch and not have tears on my eyes. this here is one of my favorite premieres.
Dude, you made me bust a gut at 43:26 🤣 I almost woke up my dad 😂
But seriously, this was a super entertaining reaction to the best season premiere of the show. I love your near-constant barrage of humorous commentary, especially all the dirty jokes 😉
38:00 Just in case no one's mentioned it yet, Double Diamond smashing the Cutie Mark Vault is inspired by Apple's famous "sledgehammer to conformity" commercial from 1984.
After so many seasons, and the first two EQG movies + shorts I finally made it, t so imo the best season premiere of the whole MLP series, and I finally get to see your initial reaction to one of my top 5 favorite characters Starlight Glimmer.
I'd say Starlight is the most fuckable female villain but, you know... Luna exists. Also Chrysalis automatically ties with first place due to her unfair ability. So I guess that makes Starlight third.
Great reaction sorry I'm late to react and just a heads up but you are getting close to episode 100. oh and curious but will Scootertrix still happen at a later date?
@@ponybroiguess384 glad to hear that :) I saw on your list it was gonna be one or the other and just hoping if it didn't get picked first it would happen later on
The Cutie Map as an artifact is a Plot Finder done right. It's a nice nudge in the direction of where the plot is, but not what it is or how to solve it, necessarily. Other than that (and this is controvertial, I know), I don't like Starlight as a villain. Her motivations are questionable at best for the conclusion, and also her way of doing things is making everypony's lives objectively worse. The writers probably should've done something like a Cutie Mark Crucible where evrypony contributes their talent to everypony else, and as such improving the lives of the citizens of Our Town while acheiving the same "equality" effect.
A solution I've come up with to my hypothetical scenario would be like the CMC, where foals aren't sure what their talents are because they also have the talents from that crucible, and if they get a talent that's already in it, they're not really contributing to the overall wellbeing and that's an underlying division that calls for the map to send them.
I can't see Starlight as a villain lmao 🤣 I only watched this premiere once, manyyyy years ago. Starlight didn't have time to sink in as a villain in my perfection of her 😆😅 Edit: 32:22 the soot reached all the way over to PB damn
I like the contrast of Starlight and the Sirens, aired so close to each-other. They're opposite ideologies: The Sirens go "it doesn't matter who you hurt, if you're just proving you're the best", Starlight goes "you can't have a nightmare if you never dream". Extreme libertarianism versus extreme communism, and the dangers of both when taken to those extremes. I thought the show was clever to introduce both parties basically at the same time.

12:42 - no, that's a common misconception made by most blind reactors to this story: Communism has nothing to do with erasing one's individuality, it means the belief that everything should be shared equally, and everyone must play their part...this whole "everyone must be the same" theme is more of a cult mentality.
Whelp. Most of this comment thread is filled with people who never experienced a communist/socialist regime. (Tell me you've never lived under communism/socialism without telling me you've never lived under communism/socialism).
@@ft.jackjimmy7282 Communism ≠ authoritarianism. It may lead to it, but it’s not automatically the same thing anymore than capitalism Is the same as fascism. What Starlight is doing is being a cult leader. There is no system of government in her town that causes goods to be divided between the masses here, and their clearly is not equality between Starlight and the others. Their society still has a market economy, just with a cult leader who gives the illusion of equality to their followers.
Communism is like North Korea or Soviet Russia where their power comes from authoritarianism, which literally denies any sort of individual freedom. But what you're trying to describe is Socialism, where society builds things together to benefit each other instead of only the rich people benefiting everything. Starlight is doing communism because it doesn't seem like any of this is voluntary.
@@yallaintit It’s more that authoritarian regimes that use communism are like that. I would say that in concept communism isn’t like that, but the problem is whenever communist government’s are implemented they nearly always result in authoritarian regimes and dictators, so it’s easy to see why people would associate communism with this kind of cult mentality despite them not actually being the same thing
Communism is about equality and being controlled by an absolute power, that’s why people relate it to this. They are very similar- or at least, how the Soviet Union ended up being like.

@@StopThisIsBatCountry Actually, we have no idea what any "world leader" want. It is very possible that most of them actually wants what is best for the world, but between the quote "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" and the risk that too many world leaders are either misinformed or simply full of themselves, there is the clear risk that it doesn't matter if they want good, bad or just want nepotism ...
@@RubberyCat i completely agree with your points so far. The -isms are really hard to universally define, since everyone understands it a bit differently, but we are both on the same side essentially, which is great.
I value independence and "taking care of my own business" as well as freedom (including free markets and so on). A society should be decentralized and have autonomous communities who could take care of each other, nature and children in times of need.
This of course is almost impossible in this modern-global world, I'm looking into the permaculture principles, which are mainly about developing a self-sustaining ecosystem for food production (plants and animals, water and energy) but also has many aspects of self-sustaining and independent communities. Unfortunately this is not what the world leader want, so it will always be some sort of underground-parallel-society.
@@StopThisIsBatCountry Well, i have to disagree with you a bit on what "Socialism" is. I see Socialism as the diluted version of Communism, and as such it may work together with other political ideals and systems ... but it will also fail if they fail. On the other hand, Capitalism as it it is known today, is in the same place, except its diluted version is also called "capitalism" ...
In reality, both True Capitalism and (true) Communism has failed: Communism led to, indeed, oppressive states one way or another, while Capitalism led to Monopolies or Oligopolies. Essentially, both were used to create the exact opposite of their intention at worst, and at best, they were severely diluted to allow some (often democracy-based) cooperation.
I'm a lefty, but this failure is sadly obvious to anyone that is somewhat smart.
I think, that part of it is because both systems is anti-authoritarian ... but at the same time, humans seem to be hardwired into needing at least some form of authority to take care of "big things" while each worker focuses on doing their job.
This results in pitfalls like "not expecting our own to grab power" or "trying to control thing we have no idea how it works".
It is obvious, that as long as a system works well enough, and as long as the ones "in power" do not screw over the workers too much, humans seem pretty content. So, perhaps we should ditch the Capitalist-Communist-Authoritarian-Anarchist poles altogether, and instead focus on singular working concepts, like mainly free market, mainly free healthcare, and such, and see how they may fit together.
I mean, i care very little about "democracy", i want to have influence over MY life, not anyone else's.
also, it is all a matter of definition... there are countless different viewpoints on socialism and communism.... but in my opinion they are all misleading, just as starlight is misleading the villagers. Many people think of socialism as something utopian where the people own means of production... guess what, in the former GDR the means of production belonged to the people, at least that is what it said on the sticker that has been put on every product. In reality, it was a totalitarian regime with extensive indoctrination and control/surveillance of the people. As long as you were "in-line", your illusion of a perfect system could be kept alive (the showcase of perfect socialism to the west)... but oh dare you question or criticize the system or you try to take matters in your own hands (e.g. live independently and not in the collective). Your life was systematically ruined by the Stasi and by the party.
@@RubberyCat unfortunately we never had "real" capitalism and we never had "optimal" communism. Currently we have Oligopolism/Plutocracy-Kleptocracy (in a "democratic" veil) and all attempts of so called communism ended in miserable socialist-totalitarian regimes.
Don't be fooled by the warm words of our future socialist rulers. Socialism means endless suffering for ALL people and only works as long as there is wealth/resources to be taken from others. The current developments, as you call them "cultural marxism" or "SJWs", are nothing else than societal engineering, creating artificial problems... and then those in control offer solutions that the population willfully accepts, even if it means giving up all their remaining rights and freedom. That would be stage 3, the finalization of the transformation to global-socialism... this time in the name of "our planet" and "our climate" (Agenda 2030).... you will see.
Most current example: Venezuela Historic Examples: Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics, National SOCIALISTS Future Example: European Union of SOCIALIST Republics, Global SOCIALISTS
@@StopThisIsBatCountry ...."The last five years".... Heh, i bet you are referring to the "cultural marxism"-nonsense that some are peddling without realizing that the term and the idea is an oxymoron as Marx warned against using his ideas on cultural differences .... And you are also referring to the "SJW"s, i assume. But, don't worry, shit goes the way of shit ... and we need to fix said shit, no matter what direction it comes from.
I mean, did you know that Monopolies are anathema to Capitalism? Capitalism is a Free Market, and Monopolies are not .... Also, did you know that a Strong State actually is anathema to Communism? Communism is From the People, For the People, and a Strong State is for The State and not for the People ...
@@bonbonpony Well, he's right to consider that it is, but it actually isn't, as Communism were about monetary and political equality, not about cultural or this ... ability-wise nonsense. However, it do shows one way on how even concepts like Equality and Friendship can get turned on their heads and misused and abused if someone influential gets the wrong impression of how it works.
Starlight, at this moment, is not like Marx (she's clearly non-marksist :P ), but she's not like Stalin either, who only used the ideology to create a super-state ... No, she believes in her own views, and scrambles to make her own Utopia ... so she is more like Lenin ... but Lenin died dissatisfied with the result. I bet he never expected the counter-revolution to start from The People instead of from the overthrown Nobility ...
@@bonbonpony yeah I'm worried about the future too. the last five years have definitely sped up the process in the EU and US. You could say we are already in the second stage of it.

An interesting thing about Starlight, is that I'm pretty sure she has asperger's syndrome. I'm no doctor, but looking up the symptoms some of them do match up with how she acts.
@@bonbonpony I just googled aspergers syndrome and some of the symptoms described match with how she acts. I actually only thought to look it up after watching a reaction where someone who has it said Starlight did as well. Anyway, let me see if I can copy some of the symptoms I think match with how Starlight acts.
(Please note I erased anything I didn't think matched, and that it dose require a medical diagnosis. And as I'm no doctor, not even close, this is just a personal theory on Starlight)
Asperger syndrome: A developmental disorder affecting ability to effectively socialize and communicate.
Behavioral: aggression, compulsive behavior, impulsivity, or social isolation. Mood: anger, anxiety, or apprehension. Also common: depression, intense interest in a limited number of things, nightmares.
(I even think some of the therapies listed could help her. But again, I'm not a doctor and really wouldn't know.)
Therapies: Support group, Anger management, Family therapy, Sensory processing, Group psychotherapy, Self-care: Stress management
All in all, I could be completely wrong, but it dose offer an interesting take on Starlight's character and why she acts how she dose.

3 likesThe Cutie Map as an artifact is a Plot Finder done right.
0 likesA solution I've come up with to my hypothetical scenario would be like the CMC, where foals aren't sure what their talents are because they also have the talents from that crucible, and if they get a talent that's already in it, they're not really contributing to the overall wellbeing and that's an underlying division that calls for the map to send them.

2 likes@@ft.jackjimmy7282 Communism ≠ authoritarianism.
1 likeCommunism is like North Korea or Soviet Russia where their power comes from authoritarianism, which literally denies any sort of individual freedom. But what you're trying to describe is Socialism, where society builds things together to benefit each other instead of only the rich people benefiting everything. Starlight is doing communism because it doesn't seem like any of this is voluntary.

1 likeActually, we have no idea what any "world leader" want.
0 likesI value independence and "taking care of my own business" as well as freedom (including free markets and so on).
@@StopThisIsBatCountry
1 likeWell, i have to disagree with you a bit on what "Socialism" is.
I see Socialism as the diluted version of Communism, and as such it may work together with other political ideals and systems ... but it will also fail if they fail.
On the other hand, Capitalism as it it is known today, is in the same place, except its diluted version is also called "capitalism" ...
In reality, both True Capitalism and (true) Communism has failed:
Communism led to, indeed, oppressive states one way or another, while Capitalism led to Monopolies or Oligopolies.
0 likes@@RubberyCat unfortunately we never had "real" capitalism and we never had "optimal" communism.
0 likesCurrently we have Oligopolism/Plutocracy-Kleptocracy (in a "democratic" veil) and all attempts of so called communism ended in miserable socialist-totalitarian regimes.

Historic Examples: Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics, National SOCIALISTS

And you are also referring to the "SJW"s, i assume.
But, don't worry, shit goes the way of shit ... and we need to fix said shit, no matter what direction it comes from.
I mean, did you know that Monopolies are anathema to Capitalism?
Capitalism is a Free Market, and Monopolies are not ....
Also, did you know that a Strong State actually is anathema to Communism?
Communism is From the People, For the People, and a Strong State is for The State and not for the People ...

0 likesWell, he's right to consider that it is, but it actually isn't, as Communism were about monetary and political equality, not about cultural or this ... ability-wise nonsense.
0 likes@@bonbonpony Well, yeah. You right.

He's not wrong, това́рищ ;) To comfort you, though, the entire European Union and United States are starting to look that way too recently. As they say, if you want to introduce socialism, start with democracy, and people will do the rest :q

@@bonbonpony some of the parts village’s system is actually like a communist nation, so no it’s not really tied to North America.
1 likeBon Bon Right. Maybe North Korea makes more sense with their restrictions, public endorsement and private resistance.

0 likesAn interesting thing about Starlight, is that I'm pretty sure she has asperger's syndrome. I'm no doctor, but looking up the symptoms some of them do match up with how she acts.

@@bonbonpony
0 likesI just googled aspergers syndrome and some of the symptoms described match with how she acts.
Therapies: Support group, Anger management, Family therapy, Sensory processing, Group psychotherapy,
Self-care: Stress management
All in all, I could be completely wrong, but it dose offer an interesting take on Starlight's character and why she acts how she dose.
. . . Also, my apologies if I don't respond. For some reason I get a notification if my comment gets liked, but not if it gets replied to. I should probably dig through YouTube's settings and see if I can fix that, because it's probably my own fult. Xb
Say what now? What symptoms do you mean?
1 likeHowever, these days, when everyone claims to have Asperger's syndrome, that doesn't surprise me much...
