Windows 98 didn't rely too much on the reg, it's a DOS OS, the registry was kinda optional. WIndows XP has way too much shit loaded in the reg, even it's own OS type, license, etc. All newer OS act similar to XP.
Seriously I just installed USB drivers and it dropped dead on the spot, I couldn't use my mouse or keyboard, I plugged a PS/2 mouse in, I had to basically reinstall the whole OS because I couldnt do anything with the drivers at all

If you delete the reg key, it just recreates itself. I did that once to reset it to defaults.
