This is what gets me: Wolves, in the wild, actually go for the wolf that:
1) Smells the best to them
2) If a female, has to have a male that will protect them. This isn't necessarily an "alpha" male, but a male who is willing to put his life on the line for her
3) Is a good hunter and tracker. This means that a female wolf can depend on the male to bring her food right after she has her cubs.

This is why with a wolfgirl in heat, you actually better be paying attention -- because if not, there could be a male around somewhere that is already possessive over her. Because yes, at least for males, they are very territorial over the females they mate with. Thus, in this situation, I'd be just a tad bit cautious.
