Emerson Lake & Palmer: Paintings on display (remastered) In 1971, progressive rock supergroup Emerson Lake & Palmer took to the stage of Newcastle City Hall to perform Mussorgsky’s acclaimed work Paintings at Exhibition, originally a piano suite, and has now turned into a complete symphonic rock extravaganza of the popular trio. After a self-titled debut last year, the band wanted to release another album to the public, and this live concert recording seemed like a logical choice. BMG has lavishly re-released this classic double digipack album, along with a bonus CD featuring another ELP performance a few months before the end of 1970 in London, where they also performed the suite along with several elective cuts from their debut, as and live medley suites performed in Puerto Rico in 1972.This new image remaster at the 2016 exhibition sounds fantastic, giving this symphonic rock masterpiece the clarity it has always deserved. Hearing the 1-2 beats of “Promenade” and “The Gnome” that just erupted from your speakers is a matter of beauty, and Keith Emerson especially in full glory with his array of synthesizers, Hammond organ and piano. Greg Lake’s sumptuous vocals and deft acoustic guitar gently guide the listener through “The Sage,” and the wild bombshell of Emerson’s Moog - Carl Palmer’s intricate drum work on “Old Castle” is pure prog rock bliss. Keith lowers his legendary skills at Hammond during “Blues Variation” with some acrobatic bass lines from Lake, while the three-part section of “Baba Yaga” once again shows how fierce this band really was.
Bonus live songs are great, with a shortened Puerto Rico medley that takes the flesh of the suite and condenses into a showcase for band virtuosity, and a seemingly full performance from Lyceum a masterful display of full Paintings at the show, as well as dramatic "Foot Edge," "Barbarian" and " Rondo".
