The target was an exciting American quintet from Memphis featuring the legendary Jimi Jamison (Cobra, Survivor) on vocals. They released two albums on A&M in 1976 ("Target") and in 1977 ("Captured"). However, it was revealed that the third album was recorded in 1979 under the name "In Range", before the band split in 1982. While Jimi Jamison's vocals went to greater heights - thanks to his stints fronting Cobra and Survivor, not to mention releasing an impressive catalogue of solo records - Target was the band with whom he first progressed from playing bars and clubs to touring as the main record act that opens for the likes of Black Sabbath and Styx. However, target LP's debut wasn't the singer's first credit for recording the album. Neither is bassist Tommy Cathey. After we started collaborating in the band Omaha in the early 1970s, the opportunity to hook up with another project was just too good to miss, as the latter explains, "After being in Omaha with Jimi, we both wanted to explore the chances of original music," Cathey recalls. "David Beaver had been involved in original music for several years, so we gravitated to it. We made two albums with D. Beaver, only one of which was released ("Combinations" on the TMI label in 1973). Right after the second album, Jimi and I were ready to start our own band for original music, so we teamed up with guitarist/organist Buddy Davis to form Target. We were still playing cover music to pay the bills, but all the time we were writing our own music and trying to be a good rock and roll band!" The band was well on tour at the time, and it's a shame the band split before that third release saw the light of day when "In Range" was filmed in the fall of 1979. It took the band about two to three weeks to record their third album. What an album that is! This is Target's best recording, full of quality songs and musical prowess.
