Zuko is a tragic character and I like how this episode fleshes him out a bit more, seeing what else he went through in his childhood, before the infamous confrontation with his father, and his banishment.
This episode really gives us insight on Zuzus life growing up and reveals his mother. Some interesting dynamics were shown with Azulas and Zukos relationship with their parents (Azula had a stronger bond with her father and much weaker bond with her other while Zuko was the opposite), with each other, other relatives and Azulas friends. We saw a bit of Iroh when he was much more military ambitious, trying to conquer Ba sing se. Azulon seems pretty nasty as well. A very deep episode, and in my opinion a masterpiece.
Conflicting for Zuko since some of the people he meets with this new look makes him feel torn between this new outlook on life and his horrid past he left behind.
Ah yes, Classic Western episode in non-western setting. Pure excellency.
Also, regarding your comment on Zuko's state in that battle against Hammer Guy... I bet that the main reason he skipping hits and not flawlessly winning here. Even if he had a hot meal and a nights rest.
Love and kinda hate this episode the same time.. Love it bc of the flashbacks and the character developement Zuko get - and hate it, to see, Zuko's brandmarked imediatelly, after he revealed his identity. I mean yeah he's not just a random fn traveller, but the prince of their enemies - but on the other side they trusted him first, without to know, who he really was and he prooved, that he cares enough for these foreigner people, to protect them from these bullying cowards. But all he gains in the end, is just the proof, that people stop questioning, after they heard, where you come from and that it doesn't matter anymore, what you've done for them before. People just don't believe, that someone can change and that once you became a bad guy, you'll stay forever. Thats so sh++ty and even more, as you see, that this still happens in reality..
And yeah.. ASSula's a natural peace of sh.. mudcake - born and raised o7
