I admit, before this episode I wasn't a big fan of Rarity, I was struggling through her episodes because my 14-year-old self really disliked the "girly character" he saw. This episode, however, changed my attitude significantly, I started to view her less as a rich, pompous fashionista and more as a hard-working, caring entrepreneur, struggling against the industry practices to spread her personal creative vision. That wasn't the first time it was shown in the series, but for me it was the first time I noticed it, mainly thanks to the song sequence that really captivated me. So yeah, after that, I started warming up to Rarity and she gradually became my favorite of all the Mane 6 :)
@thinkwithvideos3310 I felt the same way before season 4. When I saw Rarity Takes Manehatten, my opinion of her changed. I always thought she was a bit too prissy in the first three seasons. From season 4 onward, she grew on me.
22:50 "What is that thing?!" The fans have dubbed her Whoa Nelly. From what I heard, she was inserted as a joke by the staff, expecting that Hasbro would never approve... but they didn't do anything to stop it.
She keeps appearing in the series following this so she's not a total joke, she was called the "Love Yourself Pony" which has a nicer connotation than it being simply a fat joke.
Yay, Rarity has a new fashion boutique in Canterlot! Also, I like Sassy Saddles. She may not have shown the best impression at first, but she’s a good mare.
Agreed. She's not a bad mare, just slightly misguided as she was set in her way of success and couldn't see how it would only end up killing the business. Thankfully she did see sense eventually and had the dignity to choose leave when she felt she'd done too much damage and would be fired. We don't see much of her following this, but seems she took the lesson to heard and Canterlot Boutique was set to be a success.
This is an episode that stays in my top 10 favorites of all time due to how relatable it is to me personally aside from it starring rarity herself - the struggles of individual fashion designers or any artist to compete with the business perspective is very much true that this episode hits me in the heart on all the right places as a reminder to stay true to my own self as an artist... Glad to see and hear your opinions on this episode, its refreshing!
10:41 Sassy: "Everypony, please follow me and you can all place your orders for the Princess Dress." PonyBor: "How about just the princess? I'll sign right now." The Princess of Friendship is probably a little out of your price range...
An excellent episode that feels like a natural progression of Rarity’s character arc. “Rules of Rarity” is my favorite Rarity song of the entire show, surpassing even “Art of the Dress.”
@@HeavyMetalMal42 Well, if you're looking for a song that's probably objectively bad (as in doesn't represent the themes of the character or show), then Luna's Future is probably one I'd pick.
The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come was renowned for being silent, so a loud and bombastic song doesn't quite work. The lyrics are fine, but doing it in a hushed whisper with subdued music would be much better for the themes and character of the song.
@@skittybug6937 Totally fair. I guess I see “It’s bad” and “I didn’t like it” as two different things, but I’m not going to get on your ass about semantics.
@@skittybug6937 The Magic Inside (what you called “I am Just a Pony”) is actually one of my favorites. It has gorgeous vocals by a Broadway performer, a really beautiful piano accompaniment that’s different from anything else in the show, and was nominated for an Emmy. I think the lyrics are really powerful with their message of remembering who you are, trusting your own abilities and creative vision instead of doing what someone else says will make you popular, and being okay with making mistakes and letting others see you as a real, flawed person.
Of course, none of that means you have to like it. Personal taste is a thing. I don’t think it can fairly be called an objectively bad song though.
A bad song not on purpose...I'm gonna make a benchmark for song making it over 60 seconds, to eliminate the minor "songlets." Reprisals of the same song don't add to that. EQG doesn't count either.
Love is in Bloom is pretty damn generic, and I An Just a Pony is just...uninspired. Especially with the Equestrian Anthem and The Spectacle earlier in the episode.
Those are the only ones I can really think of as bad. If you include the movie, Open Up Your Eyes is also pretty trash.
13:33 "What's that one's name?" I know you weren't talking about the one who bought that first dress, but that's Sweet Biscuit. The reason for that unusual name is because Rarity's mom (who has a similar cutie mark) already took the name Cookie Crumbles.
Kelly Sheridan is sure versatile like the other voice actors on MLP. Whether she be Starlight or Sassy Saddles, it doesn't matter. I can vaguely hear them both.
1:57 "Aww, you wanna play with your kitty? ...Narrator007, I know you're gonna make a perverted comment on what I just said." I was literally thinking about whether to pause the video and type something there when you said that. It was like you read my mind!
I think I remember in Silver Quills 'After the Fact' series he mentioned hearing that Rarity (despite her claims), is not so much a fashion designer as she is a tailor. While that might seem a step down, it actually fits. She doesn't seek mass production of her products, she wants to make things personal, unique, and special to every customer that comes in.
2:37 "She taped it to her hoof?" Pinkie must have left her invisible suction cups at home. You know, the ones every pony has; they're standard issue in Equestria. :)

The problem is that Sassy doesn't know it. Her idea of successful business is different. 19:14 That was actually a very good decision. First, because it's not her business anymore. Second, because takes away the only thing that Sassy used to get the grip on her. Third, because it made her show her true colours, and who's more dependent on whom in this company. Managers are sneaky little bastards, they always try to convince their prey that without them they're nothing, and that they're gonna fail if they won't do what they say, while in reality it's the other way around: they need you. Without you, they have no product to sell, nothing to manage, and they are too cowardly to run their own business and taking all the risk themselves. (Quoting a dialogue from one Polish movie: "There's a business to be made." – "Then why don't you make it?" :J ) 20:05 If Raven were a pony.... :J 22:18 "I beg your pardon? You've signed the NDA, you cannot leave ]:> (Also I won't let you leave after I invested so much bits into your education.) From now on, your sassy ass belongs to me, mwahah" ;) 22:52 Remember that portrait on the drawer in the Weather Factory? ;> That's her :q Poor guy... :J Unless he likes dem chunky ;> (I don't think she's too heavy though, judging by how smoothly she moves.
