As a neurodivergent person who also has depression pinkies attitude actually made sense to me- a lot of people who have ADHD or Autism often will latch onto a certain thing and if it's for some reason taken away it can feel DEVASTATING no matter how small it feels to anyone else- of course she's just a cartoon pony and I shouldn't overthink it but she has so many signs of neurodivergency, and I love her bc of it
The thing that struck me the most about this episode is how much of Pinkie's sisters shines through in her when she's depressed like this. You've got the hair and some of the demeanor of Marble with the reserved and emotionless attitude of Maud. Even some of Limestone shines through in her looks and the occasional outburst of anger. Really shows how they're related and come from the same place but how Pinkie has also radically changed her life compared to the others, but so much of that is just a front.
"What is life? Are our passions so interchangable? When one focuses on one aspect of interest, do the others lose their luster? Is the gator forever alone in his appreciation of the pink horse's yovidaphone playing? What is music? Is the cacophony of those around me any better or worse than the pink one's instrument? As with art, perhaps music to one is noise to another and the expression of the artist is truly what matters.
So the only reason why Pinkie Pie was so miserable that her friends told her that she couldn't play the Yovidaphone which is why she lost her pink mane, then she got it back because she's happy to play the Yovidaphone after she was convince by her friends to not stop playing the Yovidaphone even those she's bad at it still. I guess her friends realise that the only way to make her happy again is staring at them all along (Yovidaphone) and didn't thought about that in the first place.
This episode was really, really hated. I can see why. The damage and disturbances Pinkie was causing was the main issue, but how good Pinkie was at playing was treated as the issue. They talked to her about the wrong thing and it was never brought up. The episode even ended with that not being acknowledged, so Pinkie is just going to go back to doing that, so the conflict acted like it was resolved, but it never was. That caused a huge disconnect with the audience the whole way through, because it's so easy for a viewer to pick up on. I don't understand how this slipped past the writing staff. Plus, it seems kind of out of character for Pinkie to be so upset that she wasn't good at an instrument that, as Maud said, "her life had no meaning". If her life has suddenly changed so that a musical instrument is their sole source of joy, and even throwing parties and making ponies happy, the thing she loves more than anything, now has no meaning, I need an explanation on how that came to be. Plus, a hobby is unhealthy when you get this obsessed over it. Pinkie's love for the yovidophone seemed more like an addiction than a hobby.
Well, although I don't like this episode, your reaction made it significantly better. And the good news is, right after this episode are a TON of great ones. Nearly every episode this season after this episode got a 5 star rating from me.
5:35 I completely understand why they're crying. I have upstairs neighbors who stomp all day and all night like their storming the beaches of Normandy, and then sometimes jackhammering goes on outside very early in the morning. The yovidophone sounds like all of that combined, concentrated into a WMD. I... I would cry too. ;( 6:04 Pinkie probably would, but she lives above Sugarcube Corner, so I think Mrs. Cake probably threatened to kick her out or raise her rent or something.
I can agree that Pinkie's sudden obsession with the yovidophone was odd, but I viewed more as a tool used to show a side of her we don't get to see a lot of: Depression.
As someone who has suffered from depression on and off my whole life, I can fully see how what Pinkie does is entirely IN character. Depression isn't just being really sad, like some people seem to think, it can cause an entire shift in your personality, and make you say, think and even DO things you would normally never do. You lose all motivation and enjoyment in the things that you do.
PLUS, I should say, I have never viewed it as being the loss of the yovidaphone that upset Pinkie: I viewed it as the sudden understanding that something she loved doing was hurting her friends, a thing which WOULD push Pinkie over the edge like this.
Could the episode have been written better? Certainly. Does it deserve all of the hate it gets? Not as far as I'm concered, no.
Horse Play: Be honest with your friends. They'll understand. Yakity Sax: Don't be honest with your friends. They'll get so upset that they'll leave the country.
There really were quite a few contentious episodes this season, and there are still more to come; this season probably has the most of any. It's still strange to think about. I mean, who would have thought a show about pony friendship could have such controversy?
@@SunnyEquus I meant in terms of the fandom from what I've seen. I like most of the episodes this season, and worst-case scenario just okay with some. Sorry that didn't come across in my comment.
I disagree, aside from maybe one episode, all the following ones are great! :) Also, I think you didn't realize what was the theme of season 8: "Various types of confiicts between friends or relatives and solutions to them."Almost every episode is about that. And it might have looked like "controversial material" because of that. :) And that's an interesting concept: exploring different posibilities of problems friends can have in real life. It can teach kids a lot.
Wow, you and Luffyiscool are the only two reactors that actually relatively enjoyed this episode. Everyone else DESPISED this one more than even Non-Compete Clause.
I actually relate pretty hard to pinky here. I been through phases like this. Sometimes it worked out. Sometimes not. But if someone took that from me before I was ready to walk away, it was devastating.
I agree that this is a god-awful episode, but Non-Compete Clause actually ranks significantly lower on IMDb (in fact, it’s by far the lowest-rated episode of the entire show).
It was suggested by some people that Pinkie not be allowed to play in public or have twilight put her in the bubble of silence. And i disagree with both of those options because regardless of whether her playing was good or bad taking away her freedom to practice in a public area or locking her away while everyone in else the town is allowed to play music in public regardless of how they sound wouldn't be right especially since there are a bunch of episodes that show a pony playing in public (Like Blue Note from "The fault in our cutie marks").
Some fans also say that Pinkie just went out of her way to bother the rest of the mane 6 to which i disagree with that as well. Pinkie could very well of asked Rarity if she could play for her and rarity said yes wanting to be supportive. Or When she murdered Applejack's product she could have been going somewhere to play with no one around or even returning from the area where she was solo playing and the road leading through AJ's farm could have been the only way to or from there (Pinkie also had her eyes closed during that entire scene).
My only guess for the wonderbolt scene is that she wanted to show support for RD but i blame the stadium's rules & security because they allowed her to go into the stadium with that instrument just like how they allowed RD's parents in there fireworks to shoot into the show. Finally for the Fluttershy scene Pinkie could have just been walking by her house until she saw fluttershy and decided she would play for her before she went to bed not knowing that she had sleeping animals in her home because of where she was. (Pinkie also once again shut her eyes before she could see fluttershy telling her not to play).
Is this a great episode? Nope. Is it a terrible episode? No. This episode could have been better but it also could have been a million times worse in my opinion. Overall i wouldn't put it anywhere near my top 100 episodes of the series.
@@rabidbunnyman1678 To be fair i don't think anyone would exactly think their music would be skinning birds or Exploding apples. And there have been episodes where Fluttershy & angel were the only ones in the cottage but either way i see what you mean.
I see what you're getting at for the most part, but Pinkie closing her eyes doesn't really help her case. Sure, she wasn't malicious, but that only means that she wasn't being cautious. She wasn't really watching what effects her music had - literally - especially near her friends, and of the group especially Fluttershy (whom she knows cares for animals in her cottage) and Applejack. I don't know, it was probably just a big visual gag that just wound up not being that funny.
I think part of the problem is that Pinkie was not only oblivious to the damage she was causing, but she thought she was getting good and was oblivious to her own shortcomings in her playing. Maybe she thought she was spreading joy by playing in public. I agree with others that this episode wasn't great. The writing needed more polishing, as it seemed kinda scattered.
This episode is my least favorite of the series, and I am not the only one who thinks so. Anyway, from now on we are going on a streak of good episodes all the way into season 9.
