Speed Limit was a short-lived French Jazz-Rock band, based in Paris and led by Hungarian drummer George Jinda and all star-line-ups, including Magma fellows Joël Dugrenot (bass) and Yochk'o Seffer (wind instruments) alongside Gerard Curbillon on guitars and Jean-Louis Bucchi (electric piano). This quintet recorded and announced the band's debut of the same name in 1975 at Le Chant du Monde.
"Speed limit" is the definition of improvisational Jazz-Rock with no particular goal other than abstract interludes and long solos by members
benda. And while the album features some nice grooves and big breaks with dominant instrumentation, they all soon fall into a solo maze with endless minutes of free virtuosity. The individual performances are expected to be good, as far as the musicians involved are concerned: Seffer's melodic saxophone lines, Dugrenot's deep bass work and Bucchi's atmospheric electric piano pieces. But when it comes to compositional terms, the album is really muddy with very long solos, which along the way tire the listener, and the work far from being coherent and close.
The "speed limit" ends up being a rather tedious effort and is definitely not repressive to all the talent of these musicians.
I can only recommend this album to Free Jazz music fans, who don’t mind the countless minutes of improvisation in the album.
