The funny thing is that the original title is "BEAST"
You named it "BEST"
And I read it "BEAST" so laugh on me. 😂

I think Spike can be forgiven for losing his temper. It still was horrible what he said to Twilight, but you've got to remember that he's still a kid who never knew his biological parents. And for him, Sludge gave him hope to find out more about his past and himself. The most awful thing was that Sludge took advantage of a young boy to fulfil his own, selfish, greedy wishes. And hey, Spike apologized to Twilight in the end.

Spike's reaction is actually a common reaction in this scenario. There are some people who have always known they were adopted and look to find their parents, not realising the help their adopted families have given. This is likely why many faux parents don't tell their adopted children the truth, because they fear they might not be seen as real parents. On the other side, there are plenty of adopted kids who find reason to hate their real parents for abandoning them, and that could still lead to the same effect because they may see their current life a lie. Spike was rarely ever seen to think of Twilight as his mother. He viewed her and Shining Armor as siblings, as addressed in Sparkle's Seven (albeit that was after this episode). So I would guess that he saw their parents as his parents too, or as close as he could get, though acknowledging that Twilight did a lot for him, of which he had just forgotten for a while when Sludge came along.

Then again, Spike did a lot for Twilight too. One could argue he did more for her than vice versa. I can't speak for him or how he thinks of Twilight, but, up until this episode, it doesn't seem like he ever viewed her as his mother in the slightest.

It's more of a parent-child like relationship as I think so because of one of the comics showing twilight as a filly having to take care of spike all by herself.

I've always seen Twilight and Spike's relationship as more of a parent-kid relationship but even then it's not strictly that. There are elements of employer-employee relationships and even master-servant. Like Spike is her assistant and cleans up the house, that's not something a child or siblings does.

And for that reason while I do think Twilight is the closest thing Spike has as a mother, she's not exactly his mom. Their relationship actually reminds me of a more medieval style relationship where a lord or lady might think of a servant as his/her son. That's the closest think in real life that resembles what Spike and Twilight have and even that is doesn't exist in modern society anymore.

And even though Twilight and Spike so seem to have this strange servant/master/parent/son relationship, it don't really see anything wrong with it. Equestria is a different society with different rules and speaking as a viewer, I never saw anything wrong in their relationships as an observer. It's not like a modern, human relationship but that's ok. It's not immoral or weird, it's just different from what we have in today's society.

Only jerk in this episode was Sludge. He took advantage of an orphan child. Yeah Spike was harsh to Twilight, but he's a child who was excited about his dad and felt something that made him happy was being attacked. Even adults get harsh in times like that

I really enjoyed this episode. Sure, Sludge being obnoxious is a bit hard to bear, but the touching Twilight and Spike moments and Smolder continuing to be a good source of insight into dragon culture for Spike more than make up for it.

Sludge is most certainly a grade A asshole, but I like the dynamic Spike has with Smolder. Also, I love how Twilight needed to ask "It's me, right?" at the end.

Yeah this episode isn't great, but it did pretty much confirm that spike sees twilight as a parental figure at least somewhat, and at the time it made me really happy, because I've always loved that concept.

I know that what Spike said to Twilight was messed up, but I get it. He's unsure of his own heritage, a part of his own identity, and to him it seemed that Twilight was taking that missing piece away from him even though that wasn't the case. Besides, Twilight was more like his big sister than a parent, and I'm guessing Twilight's parents were more preoccupied raising her and Shining Armor versus raising Spike. It's not the same as knowing both parents, or even one when before you knew none.

Considering the way Smolder was appalled by Sledges actions, i’d like to think that the act of pretending to be a relative of a Young dragon just to use them or to take their things, is a massive taboo in dragon culture.
All so my happy place can include former dragon board Torch eating Sludge like popcorn chicken.

Nazo- kage Agreed. Dragons may be callous and conceited at times while having fun and such, but that is a definite no-no in their culture.

Well, I think we've got to give Spike some slack. Not only he had tough times to accept that he has no idea about his origins and parents, but in earlier seasons Mane 6 usually were showing a kind of neglect towads him. Or maybe it was all dependant on a particular writer (Dragon Quest was poorly written), but still. And I'm glad that Twilight is shown to be motherly attached to him.

Talking about voice actors again, Sludge is voiced by Dave Pettitt, who does a lot of anime voice work. He's voiced several DBZ characters, including the eternal dragon Shenron. We have a veteran in dragon voice acting here.

A lot of people seem to conflate hating Sludge with hating this entire episode. I was honestly shocked to discover that this is rated as the 6th-worst episode of the entire show on IMDb.

Yes, Sludge is despicable; in fact, the only character I hate more on this show is Lightning Dust. But he was intentionally written to be hated. On the whole, I thought this episode was a pretty good way to conclude Spike’s character arc (since he sadly doesn’t really get any focus episodes in season 9).

Also, I had to replay 8:18 like 10 times because it was so funny. Those damn roommates 😂

Not too much of a spoiler, but you'll be happy to know we NEVER see him again after this.

Dude, I hate this episode, I just cannot stand it. Do you know how sad it is, really? They waited 8 seasons to reveal Spike’s parents and he still got screwed over. That’s so sad.

Like, I actually cried for Spike because he deserves so much better and the fact that the writers actually approved this episode is just absolutely disappointing to me. Spike deserves better, he does not deserve this episode. I hate how that douchebag just got away with it after the bullshit that he played!

THIS was indeed the worst episode among all of Season 8 in my opinion. The word “obnoxious” doesn’t even begin to describe Sludge.

EDIT: The story itself didn’t even save grace for me neither, even if it meant well in regards to the bond between Spike and Twilight, including Smolder being a good sister figure to the former.
