Actually Microsoft did make this "fast" installer. The DISM command line he used is provided by Microsoft to deploy the OS image to enable customized installs, automated installs, and bulk installs on multiple machines by IT pros.
Except the command line exploit, everything is "official" setup system by Microsoft.
P.S. Microsoft even allows you to configure the image so you don't have to go through the oobe and have user accounts pre-configured without needing to use the registry hack.
Incorrect. Windows NT versions before Vista used compressed files. On the setup CD, there was a folder called "i386", and the system would partition and format the hard drive, expand the files, create the installation directories, and copy them over. To manually install XP in this case, the EXPAND command would play a big role. In Windows Vista, the new WIM installation method was introduced. The system would create the hard drive partition, and apply the image to this new partition, containing all the system files.

I installed Windows 10 1809 complete with drivers in a few seconds above 4 minutes. Have traded the PC for two HP dv9000 series laptops.
Was probably the fastest I could pull off a Windows install. Yes, it was on a real machine - ASUS P5QD Turbo, C2D E6750, 500GB WDC WD5000AAKX, Geforce GT210 512MB, 4GB RAM. Could've pulled faster if I had a Hybrid EFI or complete UEFI board, like a Gigabyte H55M-S2V.
Well I also thought the same.But here is the difference that I saw: an old PC runs faster on VirtualBox but a new PC runs faster on VmWare.It seems like VmWare uses a little more resources on Virtual Machines so it can run smoothly.But because VirtualBox is open source it means that is lightweight and uses less resources that is why it may seem it runs faster.It does but the cost is the performance.The performance on VirtualBox is worse than the performance on VmWare and I tested this on old and new PC'S and laptops.For me the boot and install/reinstall on VirtualBox is faster with only 1-3 seconds than VmWare.

Actually it's possible to do it in less than 2 minutes... Involves a little trickery (WIM image reduction and/or capturing VHD to WIM image). When applied both technics I achieved time of 1:10 and 1:35 with basic software installed on my very slow SSD. On NVME it's probably possible to achieve well under 1 min (I guess 30-40 sec, if Windows drivers are good for NVME).

With ram disk and super light wim image (under 1-1,5GB - basically core components without GUI) I can probably do 45-50 sec (you need to account for booting process and UEFI checkup). If UEFI could be skipped then 30-40 sec is achievable

Credit where its due tho, windows has gotten from taking an hour and a half to two hours on xp to taking only 30 minutes on a good system on windows 10, i know this because ive had to reinstall windows on my main pc once and xp on a high end machine from the time and it took me like 1 and a half hours to get xp running but only like 30 mins on my main pc to get 10 up and running Installation times have really improved in the last two decades Interesting video nonetheless!

Well I also thought the same.But here is the difference that I saw: an old PC runs faster on VirtualBox but a new PC runs faster on VmWare.It seems like VmWare uses a little more resources on Virtual Machines so it can run smoothly.But because VirtualBox is open source it means that is lightweight and uses less resources that is why it may seem it runs faster.It does but the cost is the performance.The performance on VirtualBox is worse than the performance on VmWare and I tested this on old and new PC'S and laptops.For me the boot and install/reinstall on VirtualBox is faster with only 1-3 seconds than VmWare.

2 likesInvolves a little trickery (WIM image reduction and/or capturing VHD to WIM image). When applied both technics I achieved time of 1:10 and 1:35 with basic software installed on my very slow SSD.
On NVME it's probably possible to achieve well under 1 min (I guess 30-40 sec, if Windows drivers are good for NVME).

With ram disk and super light wim image (under 1-1,5GB - basically core components without GUI) I can probably do 45-50 sec (you need to account for booting process and UEFI checkup). If UEFI could be skipped then 30-40 sec is achievable

We will never know since it will probably never be a real Speedrun. But it would be interesting to see without restrictions to see how low we could get the time. Like what if we used tiny10? This trojan changes your login screen to "Other User" and Signs you out when you log in with your credentials. Safe mode also doesn't work. Only way to kill is WinPE.
