Most masculine and feminine traits have been totally made up over time, and it has cemented this idea of 2 genders that are very different in our world, and now people are rebelling against these constructs and realizing that hey, there are a lot of different ways to define yourself! And that's totally ok

Yes, I know they sound similar, but are in fact very different. I know the gender definition is "cultural differences rather than biological ones", but it also says "the state of being male or female". However, gender identity is the spectrum. Gender identity is the thing that's infinite. So anyone saying that there's only two genders is technically correct. But there are definitely more than two gender identities.

Gender is not a social construct, gender is biological and determined by your primary and secondary sex characteristics, there are only two genders. I recommend you watch Blaire White's video on it!
Neko I, personally, think that gender is a social construct determined by how someone personally identifies. There is a spectrum of gender. Boys, girls, neither, all, and you can mix those together to make something that fits you. But sex is biological and determined by anatomy, biology, etc.. There are only two sexes: male and female. You can change your sex, obviously, if you feel it necessary. Your sex doesn't define you, but your gender does, in some aspects at least.
Please respect the fact some things people are not like you, some people feel gender fluid. Personally I'm not part of LGBTQ+ however I do respect them for this reason I will ask you to please keep your controversial opinion to yourself

I've noticed the go-to argument for many people in this thread is 'it doesn't hurt anyone so leave them alone'. You know, the Star Wars prequels didn't hurt me either, but I sure as hell ain't going to sit here and pretend they were good. The difference between the opposing sides here seems to be that one half is basing their view on facts while the other half is fearful of hurting anyone else's feelings for whatever reason. Admittedly the side with the facts often expresses them in an aggressive/condescending manner, but then again, it can be a little aggravating trying to educate people who turn away basic biology for the sake of a few measly feelings. I definitely don't think this 'snowflake culture' we've got going on here should be embraced; the world isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and people are not going to alter facts just to avoid offending you.

I think that I have a better way to say what I think: there are two genders, but there are many, many gender identities. You can identify as male, female, both, neither, you can switch between any gender, etc., and that is what dodie was referring to. There are labels and pronouns for those gender identities. You can mix and match these different labels and pronouns and feelings about your gender to create a gender identity that suits you. Also, Please ignore my last comment, I get now that it didn't make sense. And please stay reasonable in your responses, I don't want it to become a flame war, although I think that it's already too late.

i love this and here is a full explanation as to why. first off, the introduction of the video. 'ladies and gentelman. boys and girls. and those who are neither. and those who are all.' i already am in love with how dodie has used words of diversity for the LGBTQ+ community. this shows that she truly cares to how each individual of her audience may identify with themselves which is already a lovely gesture on it's own. also, i'd like to note how great it is that this isn't a normal tutorial that has silly background music and is bland. she adds effects to not only the visual appearance, but to also her voice. this makes the video more interesting and actually made me, personally, feel calm. it's different from any other tutorial i have watched and is a lovely change. there is such a nice flow in this video with an introduction, main content, and outro to the point that it's almost satifying to see that someone has found a way to achieve the skill of pleasing their audience with not only what they make their video about; but how they construct it as well.

dodie. i know i commented somewhat the same at the video of yesterday, and will probably do so the next day too. why? it feels like i'm opening up and it feels damn good while listening to your voice while doing it. i'm pretty young, and my parents don't believe in depression. my dad is the person who says whenever i open up about it, i'm too young to understand what it is and i'm just 'sad'. but the problem is that i sometimes feel numb, empty. not sad. it isn't just sad. yet his words always haunt me, because i feel like i'm just making it all up in my head. they won't get me a therapist, they won't understand. is it that i'm 'obsessed' with the thought of it or something? your videos always make me relax a bit, or even make my day easier to go through. i'm happy to know you are uploading every day this month. i hope my grammar wasn't bad here either. :')
hey! as someone who has dealt with depression (and masked depression) since i was eleven years old, let me tell you, you're not making things up! age doesn't play into this illness, that's a myth :) if your parents don't let you get a therapist and you have health care and are insured, just visit a doctor yourself, if that's not too scary! maybe ask a friend to come with you! doctors will, usually, if they're not excuse me dickheads, notice and identify symptoms of depression and then give you a transfer for a youth/child therapist/psychologist. and no, you aren't obsessed about the thought of being depressed; at some point when we feel unwell, and we hear the subject around us, or get exposed to it, we might see resemblances in ourselves, and that is good. mental illnesses get stigmatized and tabooed so much, that if you're not exposed to the subject by (someone in) media, you might never learn about it. but thinking about it, recognizing symptoms, is important. just like learning about the symptoms of a flue, for example! don't let your parents talk you out of this, they aren't always right, even if they like to think that way.

I don't know how old you are but since you said you're pretty young, I'll just assume you're hanging somewhere between 10 and 16 years old :) now there are two things I'd like to point out : 1) During our teenage years, our bodies start producing a shit ton of different hormones. You might already have heard the annoying "you're just another hormonal teenager !" but the thing is... It's kinda true. It's a well-known fact that teenagers tend to get mood swings, to feel stronger emotions and overall to have increased sensitivity. More importantly, it's fairly frequent for adolescents to suffer from acute episodes of depressive mood/behavior, which isn't the same as actual depression. Keep that in mind, it might really just be puberty :) 2) I'm sorry that your parents don't believe you, but if you really feel like something is wrong with you, please try to seek help. Maybe through a friend or a friend's parent. Go to a doctor, go to a therapist, find someone you can talk to. Depression can happen at all ages. Even babies as young as two or three months old can suffer from clinical depression. And even if you don't have actual depression, it doesn't mean you can't go to a doctor and it doesn't mean that talking to a therapist won't benefit you.

Kamile, you're very welcome :) the situation with your parents is quite sad, but don't think that every adult is the same ! One year from now I'll be graduating from med school, and we depression is a subject we all had to learn, for our psychiatry classes but also for our pediatric classes. Any rational doctor knows that real depression is more than just a shitty mood, and knows how badly it can affect a person. Most of us also know that adolescence is a tough, scary time to go through for a lot of people, during which talking and opening is just as liberating as it is difficult. Keep your head on your shoulders, don't self-diagnose (please that's a very important point) and don't lose hope ! :)

Keep trying! try different styles at different moments. Maybe start more in front, try two or three little braids, try (fake) angelbraids. or start behind your ears, this way you can style the top of your head in a way that works for you. Don't give up! You will find a way.

This video has been in my Watch Later since 2017. I graduated high school. I'm a sophomore in college. My life has completely changed. I've gained and lost more friends than I can count. Had my heartbroken even more times than that, some by said lost friends. I've grown away from dodie but it makes me smile when we can reconnect by way of this thumbnail. Up until today I've never felt it was the right time to watch this video yet. This video has always stared at me saying "Hey, you still need to figure out how to do a French braid", and I do. If there were to be a point to this comment other than me just oversharing cuz I got way too emotionally attached to YouTube for the millionth time, it'd be this: Take advantage of today. try this, which is what worked for me: work in a job that requires you to have your hair tied back at all times, have an enormous head that will barely fit inside the largest company-mandated hat unless your hair is FLAT to your head, and be forced to learn or else have your sweaty, greasy hair falling out all around your face and into the plates of other people's sloppy leftovers.

I know right! I have so much hair and it's thick and wavy which means it doesn't stay in braids for that long. I tried doing it myself but I got really hella tired
i couldn't braid my hair for the longest time, but practise makes perfect! i got my hair cut earlier in the year and it's now grown long enough to braid so now i'm here :P
Finally a hair tutorial that admits it can be difficult to french braid! Every other one I've seen is like "grab another section and repeat until the braid is done, easy!". Though right now I bare an alarming resemblance to 7th season Cersei Lannister, so I won't be doing this :P

Okay, so I've never been able to do anything beyond a normal braid and I've watched tons of tutorial to learn and I've never been successful but I watched this and now I'm suddenly able to do a Dutch braid??? It was by accident and i guess I moved my hair in the wrong direction but it's still really cool??
When you have such thick, dense, voluminous hair, you can do anything with it! If I try to braid my hair, it just lies flat on my head and there are weird shapes on the sides, where every portion of hair starts. Explained very poorly, but I just don't know how to deal with it.

When I met you in Pittsburgh, you were borderline mean to me even after I told you how Pas de Deux affected my life. I have to tell you, as someone who isn't very skilled in the fashion/hair/makeup department, that after watching countless videos of hair style tutorials specifically on braiding over many years that yours is the first one that I've actually managed to replicate. My fingers always seem to get in a knot and the more I try the more I get frustrated. It took me two tries to do this braid and honestly I could've cried, which is odd but trust me this means a lot to me. I think the thing that did it was your voice, so soothing and amazing with the old timey filter. Ok, this is stupid, but i have never been able to do a french braid. I have only ever been able to make ugly braids on the side of my head (I only wear those when sleeping). I don't really like my hair, and the fact that there are only like three hairstyles I can do with it doesn't really help (I did more before I cut my hair, and even though I think it looks better short, I wish I could do more with it). I watched this video this morning, and before going to bed again tonight, i tried to French braid my hair. It didn't really turn out good, but nevertheless, I almost screamed when I was done. It makes me really happy to be able to do a hairstyle other than what I normally do. Thank you dodie (I wish I had your hair)

Boys, girls, neither, all, and you can mix those together to make something that fits you. But sex is biological and determined by anatomy, biology, etc.. There are only two sexes: male and female. You can change your sex, obviously, if you feel it necessary. Your sex doesn't define you, but your gender does, in some aspects at least.

1 likeI've noticed the go-to argument for many people in this thread is 'it doesn't hurt anyone so leave them alone'. You know, the Star Wars prequels didn't hurt me either, but I sure as hell ain't going to sit here and pretend they were good. The difference between the opposing sides here seems to be that one half is basing their view on facts while the other half is fearful of hurting anyone else's feelings for whatever reason. Admittedly the side with the facts often expresses them in an aggressive/condescending manner, but then again, it can be a little aggravating trying to educate people who turn away basic biology for the sake of a few measly feelings. I definitely don't think this 'snowflake culture' we've got going on here should be embraced; the world isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and people are not going to alter facts just to avoid offending you.

You can identify as male, female, both, neither, you can switch between any gender, etc., and that is what dodie was referring to. There are labels and pronouns for those gender identities. You can mix and match these different labels and pronouns and feelings about your gender to create a gender identity that suits you.

'ladies and gentelman. boys and girls. and those who are neither. and those who are all.' i already am in love with how dodie has used words of diversity for the LGBTQ+ community. this shows that she truly cares to how each individual of her audience may identify with themselves which is already a lovely gesture on it's own.
also, i'd like to note how great it is that this isn't a normal tutorial that has silly background music and is bland. she adds effects to not only the visual appearance, but to also her voice. this makes the video more interesting and actually made me, personally, feel calm. it's different from any other tutorial i have watched and is a lovely change. there is such a nice flow in this video with an introduction, main content, and outro to the point that it's almost satifying to see that someone has found a way to achieve the skill of pleasing their audience with not only what they make their video about; but how they construct it as well.
I loved this so much. I'm going through a tough patch rn and honestly seeing a video everyday from you has made my days a bit less bad. Thank you so much for that

6 likesdodie. i know i commented somewhat the same at the video of yesterday, and will probably do so the next day too. why? it feels like i'm opening up and it feels damn good while listening to your voice while doing it. i'm pretty young, and my parents don't believe in depression. my dad is the person who says whenever i open up about it, i'm too young to understand what it is and i'm just 'sad'. but the problem is that i sometimes feel numb, empty. not sad. it isn't just sad. yet his words always haunt me, because i feel like i'm just making it all up in my head. they won't get me a therapist, they won't understand. is it that i'm 'obsessed' with the thought of it or something? your videos always make me relax a bit, or even make my day easier to go through. i'm happy to know you are uploading every day this month. i hope my grammar wasn't bad here either. :')

1 likehey! as someone who has dealt with depression (and masked depression) since i was eleven years old, let me tell you, you're not making things up! age doesn't play into this illness, that's a myth :)
2 likesif your parents don't let you get a therapist and you have health care and are insured, just visit a doctor yourself, if that's not too scary! maybe ask a friend to come with you! doctors will, usually, if they're not excuse me dickheads, notice and identify symptoms of depression and then give you a transfer for a youth/child therapist/psychologist.
and no, you aren't obsessed about the thought of being depressed; at some point when we feel unwell, and we hear the subject around us, or get exposed to it, we might see resemblances in ourselves, and that is good. mental illnesses get stigmatized and tabooed so much, that if you're not exposed to the subject by (someone in) media, you might never learn about it. but thinking about it, recognizing symptoms, is important. just like learning about the symptoms of a flue, for example!
don't let your parents talk you out of this, they aren't always right, even if they like to think that way.
Hey Kamile ! I don't know how old you are but since you said you're pretty young, I'll just assume you're hanging somewhere between 10 and 16 years old :) now there are two things I'd like to point out :

You might already have heard the annoying "you're just another hormonal teenager !" but the thing is... It's kinda true. It's a well-known fact that teenagers tend to get mood swings, to feel stronger emotions and overall to have increased sensitivity. More importantly, it's fairly frequent for adolescents to suffer from acute episodes of depressive mood/behavior, which isn't the same as actual depression. Keep that in mind, it might really just be puberty :)
2) I'm sorry that your parents don't believe you, but if you really feel like something is wrong with you, please try to seek help. Maybe through a friend or a friend's parent. Go to a doctor, go to a therapist, find someone you can talk to. Depression can happen at all ages. Even babies as young as two or three months old can suffer from clinical depression. And even if you don't have actual depression, it doesn't mean you can't go to a doctor and it doesn't mean that talking to a therapist won't benefit you.

0 likesKamile, you're very welcome :) the situation with your parents is quite sad, but don't think that every adult is the same ! One year from now I'll be graduating from med school, and we depression is a subject we all had to learn, for our psychiatry classes but also for our pediatric classes. Any rational doctor knows that real depression is more than just a shitty mood, and knows how badly it can affect a person. Most of us also know that adolescence is a tough, scary time to go through for a lot of people, during which talking and opening is just as liberating as it is difficult. Keep your head on your shoulders, don't self-diagnose (please that's a very important point) and don't lose hope ! :)

0 likesThis video has been in my Watch Later since 2017. I graduated high school. I'm a sophomore in college. My life has completely changed. I've gained and lost more friends than I can count. Had my heartbroken even more times than that, some by said lost friends. I've grown away from dodie but it makes me smile when we can reconnect by way of this thumbnail. Up until today I've never felt it was the right time to watch this video yet. This video has always stared at me saying "Hey, you still need to figure out how to do a French braid", and I do. If there were to be a point to this comment other than me just oversharing cuz I got way too emotionally attached to YouTube for the millionth time, it'd be this: Take advantage of today. Take advantage of now. Don't wait, or you'll be 19 and still not know how to do a French braid cuz it didn't ~feel~ like a good time to learn. Any time is a good time to learn. 2 likestry this, which is what worked for me: work in a job that requires you to have your hair tied back at all times, have an enormous head that will barely fit inside the largest company-mandated hat unless your hair is FLAT to your head, and be forced to learn or else have your sweaty, greasy hair falling out all around your face and into the plates of other people's sloppy leftovers.

0 likesI have to tell you, as someone who isn't very skilled in the fashion/hair/makeup department, that after watching countless videos of hair style tutorials specifically on braiding over many years that yours is the first one that I've actually managed to replicate. My fingers always seem to get in a knot and the more I try the more I get frustrated. It took me two tries to do this braid and honestly I could've cried, which is odd but trust me this means a lot to me. I think the thing that did it was your voice, so soothing and amazing with the old timey filter. Thank you so much, this is one of many little things you've helped me with over my years of watching you!

0 likesOk, this is stupid, but i have never been able to do a french braid. I have only ever been able to make ugly braids on the side of my head (I only wear those when sleeping). I don't really like my hair, and the fact that there are only like three hairstyles I can do with it doesn't really help (I did more before I cut my hair, and even though I think it looks better short, I wish I could do more with it). I watched this video this morning, and before going to bed again tonight, i tried to French braid my hair. It didn't really turn out good, but nevertheless, I almost screamed when I was done. It makes me really happy to be able to do a hairstyle other than what I normally do. Thank you dodie (I wish I had your hair)
