This is going to be awesome, reliving Steven Universe with you. I was skeptical of it from promos at first, but it quickly won me over and I stuck with it through it all. I hope you love it as much as so many other fans do!

Love this show. Very cool to go back and see Amethyst again before she became Vee. As for that pilot, I would say no, it doesn't look like it's connected to the rest of the series. Though there was an interesting bit of foreshadowing with Garnet. Don't worry, one great thing about this show is that it really goes into the details and history of all the characters, so you'll definitely understand things better as it goes along.

Overall, the show is excellent. As for the "drop in quality" you mentioned, the show's creator explained that something happened midway through Season 5 that caused the show to be cancelled early, so everything after that had to be rushed through production. (as for what caused the early cancellation, I won't say until you get to that part because it's a pretty big spoiler)
